Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
7 Hear me,[a] O Lord, when I cry out.
Have mercy on me and answer me.
8 My heart tells me to pray to you,[b]
and I do pray to you, O Lord.[c]
9 Do not reject me.[d]
Do not push your servant away in anger.
You are my deliverer.[e]
Do not forsake or abandon me,
O God who vindicates me.
10 Even if my father and mother abandoned me,[f]
the Lord would take me in.[g]
11 Teach me how you want me to live,[h] Lord;
lead me along a level path[i] because of those who wait to ambush me.[j]
12 Do not turn me over to my enemies,[k]
for false witnesses who want to destroy me testify against me.[l]
13 Where would I be if I did not believe I would experience
the Lord’s favor in the land of the living?[m]
14 Rely[n] on the Lord!
Be strong and confident![o]
Rely on the Lord!
8 Judah,[a] your brothers will praise you.
Your hand will be on the neck of your enemies,
your father’s sons will bow down before you.
9 You are a lion’s cub, Judah,
from the prey, my son, you have gone up.
He crouches and lies down like a lion;
like a lioness—who will rouse him?
10 The scepter will not depart from Judah,
nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet,[b]
until he comes to whom it belongs;[c]
the nations will obey him.[d]
11 Binding his foal to the vine,
and his colt to the choicest vine,
he will wash[e] his garments in wine,
his robes in the blood of grapes.
12 His eyes will be red[f] from wine,
and his teeth white from milk.[g]
13 Zebulun will live[h] by the haven of the sea
and become a haven for ships;
his border will extend to Sidon.
21 Naphtali is a free running doe,[a]
he speaks delightful words.[b]
22 Joseph is a fruitful bough,[c]
a fruitful bough near a spring
whose branches[d] climb over the wall.
23 The archers will attack him,[e]
they will shoot at him and oppose him.
24 But his bow will remain steady,
and his hands[f] will be skillful;
because of the hands of the Powerful One[g] of Jacob,
because of[h] the Shepherd, the Rock[i] of Israel,
25 because of the God of your father,
who will help you,[j]
because of the Sovereign God,[k]
who will bless you[l]
with blessings from the sky above,
blessings from the deep that lies below,
and blessings of the breasts and womb.[m]
26 The blessings of your father are greater
than[n] the blessings of the eternal mountains[o]
or the desirable things of the age-old hills.
They will be on the head of Joseph
and on the brow of the prince of his brothers.[p]
Zechariah’s Praise and Prediction
67 Then[a] his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied,[b]
68 “Blessed[c] be the Lord God of Israel,
because he has come to help[d] and has redeemed[e] his people.
69 For[f] he has raised up[g] a horn of salvation[h] for us in the house of his servant David,[i]
70 as he spoke through the mouth of his holy prophets from long ago,[j]
71 that we should be saved[k] from our enemies,[l]
and from the hand of all who hate us.
72 He has done this[m] to show mercy[n] to our ancestors,[o]
and to remember his holy covenant[p]—
73 the oath[q] that he swore to our ancestor[r] Abraham.
This oath grants[s]
74 that we, being rescued from the hand of our[t] enemies,
may serve him without fear,[u]
75 in holiness and righteousness[v] before him for as long as we live.[w]
76 And you, child,[x] will be called the prophet[y] of the Most High.[z]
For you will go before[aa] the Lord to prepare his ways,[ab]
77 to give his people knowledge of salvation[ac] through the forgiveness[ad] of their sins.
78 Because of[ae] our God’s tender mercy[af]
the dawn[ag] will break[ah] upon us from on high
79 to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death,[ai]
to guide our feet into the way[aj] of peace.”
