Psalm 12

The Faithful Have Vanished

To the choirmaster: according to The Sheminith.[a] A Psalm of David.

12 Save, O Lord, for (A)the godly one is gone;
    for the faithful have vanished from among the children of man.
Everyone (B)utters lies to his neighbor;
    with (C)flattering lips and (D)a double heart they speak.

May the Lord cut off all (E)flattering lips,
    the tongue that makes (F)great boasts,
those who say, “With our tongue we will prevail,
    our lips are with us; who is master over us?”

“Because (G)the poor are plundered, because the needy groan,
    (H)I will now arise,” says the Lord;
    “I will place him in the (I)safety for which he longs.”
(J)The words of the Lord are pure words,
    like silver refined in a furnace on the ground,
    purified seven times.

You, O Lord, will keep them;
    you will guard us[b] from this generation forever.
On every side the wicked prowl,
    as vileness is exalted among the children of man.

Proverbs 14:12-31

12 (A)There is a way that seems right to a man,
    but (B)its end is the way to death.[a]
13 Even in laughter the heart may ache,
    and (C)the end of joy may be (D)grief.
14 The backslider in heart will be (E)filled with the fruit of his ways,
    and (F)a good man will be filled with the fruit of his ways.
15 (G)The simple believes everything,
    but the prudent gives thought to his steps.
16 (H)One who is wise is cautious[b] and (I)turns away from evil,
    but a fool is reckless and careless.
17 A man of (J)quick temper acts foolishly,
    and a man of evil devices is hated.
18 The simple inherit folly,
    but the prudent are crowned with knowledge.
19 (K)The evil bow down before the good,
    the wicked at the gates of the righteous.
20 (L)The poor is disliked even by his neighbor,
    (M)but the rich has many friends.
21 Whoever (N)despises his neighbor is a sinner,
    but (O)blessed is he who is generous to the poor.
22 Do they not go astray who (P)devise evil?
    Those who devise good meet[c] (Q)steadfast love and faithfulness.
23 In all toil there is profit,
    but mere talk (R)tends only to poverty.
24 The crown of the wise is their wealth,
    but the folly of fools brings folly.
25 A truthful witness saves lives,
    but one who (S)breathes out lies is deceitful.
26 In the fear of the Lord one has (T)strong confidence,
    and (U)his children will have (V)a refuge.
27 The fear of the Lord is (W)a fountain of life,
    that one may (X)turn away from the snares of death.
28 In (Y)a multitude of people is the glory of a king,
    but without people a prince is ruined.
29 Whoever is (Z)slow to anger has great understanding,
    but he who has a hasty temper exalts folly.
30 A tranquil[d] heart gives (AA)life to the flesh,
    but (AB)envy[e] makes (AC)the bones rot.
31 Whoever oppresses a poor man (AD)insults his (AE)Maker,
    (AF)but he who is generous to the needy honors him.

Acts 4:1-12

Peter and John Before the Council

And as they were speaking to the people, the priests and (A)the captain of the temple and (B)the Sadducees came upon them, greatly annoyed because they were teaching the people and proclaiming (C)in Jesus the resurrection from the dead. And they arrested them and (D)put them in custody until the next day, for it was already evening. But many of those who had heard the word believed, and (E)the number of the men came to about five thousand.

On the next day their rulers and elders and scribes gathered together in Jerusalem, with (F)Annas the high priest and (G)Caiaphas and John and Alexander, and all who were of the high-priestly family. And when they had set them in the midst, they inquired, (H)“By what power or (I)by what name did you do this?” Then Peter, (J)filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers of the people and elders, if we are being examined today (K)concerning a good deed done to a crippled man, by what means this man has been healed, 10 let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel that (L)by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, (M)whom God raised from the dead—by him this man is standing before you well. 11 (N)This Jesus[a] is the stone that was (O)rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone.[b] 12 And there is (P)salvation (Q)in no one else, for (R)there is no other (S)name under heaven given among men[c] by which we must be saved.”
