Psalm 16

You Will Not Abandon My Soul

A (A)Miktam[a] of David.

16 Preserve me, O God, for in you I (B)take refuge.
I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord;
    (C)I have no good apart from you.”

As for (D)the saints in the land, they are the excellent ones,
    in whom is all my delight.[b]

The sorrows of those who run after[c] another god shall multiply;
    their drink offerings of blood I will not pour out
    or (E)take their names on my lips.

The Lord is (F)my chosen portion and my (G)cup;
    you hold my (H)lot.
(I)The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places;
    indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance.

I bless the Lord who (J)gives me counsel;
    in (K)the night also my (L)heart instructs me.[d]
(M)I have (N)set the Lord always before me;
    because he is at my (O)right hand, I shall not be (P)shaken.

Therefore my heart is glad, and my (Q)whole being[e] rejoices;
    my flesh also dwells secure.
10 For you will not abandon my soul to (R)Sheol,
    (S)or let your (T)holy one see (U)corruption.[f]

11 You make known to me (V)the path of life;
    in your presence there is (W)fullness of joy;
    at your right hand are (X)pleasures forevermore.

Deuteronomy 32:15-27

15 “But (A)Jeshurun grew fat, and (B)kicked;
    (C)you grew fat, stout, and sleek;
(D)then he forsook God (E)who made him
    and scoffed at (F)the Rock of his salvation.
16 (G)They stirred him to jealousy with strange gods;
    with abominations they provoked him to anger.
17 (H)They sacrificed to demons that were no gods,
    to gods they had never known,
to (I)new gods that had come recently,
    whom your fathers had never dreaded.
18 You were unmindful of (J)the Rock that bore[a] you,
    and you (K)forgot the God who gave you birth.

19 (L)“The Lord saw it and spurned them,
    because of the provocation of (M)his sons and his daughters.
20 And he said, (N)‘I will hide my face from them;
    I will see what their end will be,
for they are a perverse generation,
    children in whom is no faithfulness.
21 (O)They have made me jealous with what is no god;
    they have provoked me to anger (P)with their idols.
So (Q)I will make them jealous with those who are no people;
    I will provoke them to anger with (R)a foolish nation.
22 For (S)a fire is kindled by my anger,
    and it burns to (T)the depths of Sheol,
devours the earth and its increase,
    and sets on fire the foundations of the mountains.

23 “‘And I will heap disasters upon them;
    (U)I will spend my arrows on them;
24 they shall be wasted with hunger,
    and devoured by plague
    and poisonous pestilence;
I will send (V)the teeth of beasts against them,
    with the venom of (W)things that crawl in the dust.
25 (X)Outdoors the sword shall bereave,
    and indoors terror,
for young man and woman alike,
    the nursing child with the man of gray hairs.
26 (Y)I would have said, “I will cut them to pieces;
    (Z)I will wipe them from human memory,”
27 had I not feared provocation by the enemy,
    lest their adversaries should misunderstand,
lest they should say, (AA)“Our hand is triumphant,
    it was not the Lord who did all this.”’

Deuteronomy 32:39-43

39 “‘See now that (A)I, even I, am he,
    and there is no god beside me;
(B)I kill and I make alive;
    (C)I wound and I heal;
    and there is none that can deliver out of my hand.
40 For (D)I lift up my hand to heaven
    and swear, As I live forever,
41 if I (E)sharpen my flashing sword[a]
    and my hand takes hold on judgment,
I will take vengeance on my adversaries
    and will repay those who hate me.
42 I will make my arrows drunk with blood,
    and (F)my sword shall devour flesh—
with the blood of the slain and the captives,
    from the (G)long-haired heads of the enemy.’

43 (H)“Rejoice with him, O heavens;[b]
    bow down to him, all gods,[c]
for he (I)avenges the blood of his children[d]
    and takes vengeance on his adversaries.
He repays those who hate him[e]
    and cleanses[f] his people's land.”[g]

Luke 9:21-27

Jesus Foretells His Death

21 (A)And he strictly charged and commanded them to tell this to no one, 22 (B)saying, (C)“The Son of Man must (D)suffer many things and (E)be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on (F)the third day be raised.”

Take Up Your Cross and Follow Jesus

23 And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him (G)deny himself and (H)take up his cross (I)daily and follow me. 24 For (J)whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. 25 (K)For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself? 26 For (L)whoever is ashamed of me and of my words, of him will the Son of Man be ashamed (M)when he comes in (N)his glory and the glory of the Father and of (O)the holy angels. 27 But I tell you truly, there are some standing here who will not (P)taste death (Q)until they see the kingdom of God.”
