Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
ח (Khet)
57 The Lord is my source of security.[a]
I have determined[b] to follow your instructions.[c]
58 I seek your favor[d] with all my heart.
Have mercy on me as you promised.[e]
59 I consider my actions[f]
and follow[g] your rules.
60 I keep your commands eagerly
and without delay.[h]
61 The ropes of the wicked tighten around[i] me,
but I do not forget your law.
62 In the middle of the night I arise[j] to thank you
for your just regulations.
63 I am a friend to all your loyal followers,[k]
and to those who keep your precepts.
64 O Lord, your loyal love fills the earth.
Teach me your statutes!
11 Like apples of gold in settings of silver,[a]
so is a word skillfully spoken.[b]
12 Like an earring of gold and an ornament of fine gold,[c]
so is a wise reprover to the ear of the one who listens.[d]
13 Like the cold of snow in the time of harvest,[e]
so is a faithful messenger to those who send him,
for he refreshes the heart[f] of his masters.
14 Like cloudy skies and wind that produce no rain,[g]
so is the one who boasts[h] of a gift not given.[i]
15 Through patience[j] a ruler can be persuaded,[k]
and a soft tongue[l] can break a bone.[m]
16 You have found[n] honey—eat only what is sufficient for you,
lest you become stuffed with[o] it and vomit it up.[p]
17 Don’t set foot too frequently[q] in your neighbor’s house,
lest he become weary[r] of you and hate you.
18 Like a club or a sword or a sharp arrow,[s]
so is the one who testifies against[t] his neighbor as a false witness.[u]
19 Like a bad tooth or a foot out of joint,[v]
so is confidence[w] in an unfaithful person at the time of trouble.[x]
20 Like one who takes off a garment on a cold day,[y]
or like vinegar poured on soda,[z]
so is one who sings songs to a heavy heart.[aa]
21 If your enemy is hungry, give him food to eat,
and if he is thirsty, give him water to drink,
22 for you will heap coals of fire on his head,[ab]
and the Lord will reward you.[ac]
Conduct in Love
9 Love must be[a] without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil, cling to what is good. 10 Be devoted to one another with mutual love, showing eagerness in honoring one another. 11 Do not lag in zeal, be enthusiastic in spirit, serve the Lord. 12 Rejoice in hope, endure in suffering, persist in prayer. 13 Contribute to the needs of the saints, pursue hospitality. 14 Bless those who persecute you, bless and do not curse. 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. 16 Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty but associate with the lowly.[b] Do not be conceited.[c] 17 Do not repay anyone evil for evil; consider what is good before all people.[d] 18 If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all people.[e] 19 Do not avenge yourselves, dear friends, but give place to God’s wrath,[f] for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay,”[g] says the Lord. 20 Rather, if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him a drink; for in doing this you will be heaping burning coals on his head.[h] 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
