Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
Heʼ
33 Teach me, O Yahweh, the way of your statutes,
and I will keep it to the end.
34 Give me understanding, that I may keep your law
and heed it with my whole heart.
35 Cause me to walk in the path of your commands,
for I delight in it.
36 Incline my heart to your testimonies,
and not to dishonest gain.
37 Turn away my eyes from looking at what is worthless;
revive me in your ways.
38 Fulfill your word[a] to your servant,
which is to bring about a reverence for you.
39 Turn away my disgrace that I dread,
for your ordinances are good.
40 Look, I have longed for your precepts;
revive me in your righteousness.
Punishment for Blasphemy
10 And an Israelite woman’s son, and he was an Egyptian man’s son, went out in the midst of the Israelites;[a] and the Israelite woman’s son and an[b] Israelite man fought in the camp. 11 Then[c] the Israelite woman’s son blasphemed the name, and he cursed, so[d] they brought him to Moses—and the name of his mother was Shelomith the daughter of Dibri, of the tribe of Dan. 12 Then[e] they put him in custody so that[f] the matter might be made clear to them in accordance with the mouth of Yahweh.
13 Then[g] Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, 14 “Bring the curser outside the camp,[h] and all the hearers shall place their hands on his head, and the whole community shall stone him. 15 And you shall speak to the Israelites,[i] saying, ‘Any man[j] when he curses his God shall bear[k] his sin. 16 And he who blasphemes Yahweh’s name certainly shall be put to death; the whole community certainly shall stone him. As the alien, so the native shall be put to death at blaspheming his name.
17 “‘And when a man kills any human being, he certainly shall be put to death. 18 And he who kills[l] a domestic animal must repay for it life in place of life. 19 And when a man causes[m] a physical defect in his fellow citizen according to[n] what he has done, so it shall be done to him: 20 fracture in place of fracture, eye in place of eye, tooth in place of tooth—according to[o] the physical defect he causes[p] to the person, likewise it shall be caused[q] to him. 21 And a killer of a domestic animal must repay for it, and a killer of a human shall be put to death. 22 You must have[r] one norm; as for the alien, so[s] it must be for the native, because I am Yahweh your God.’”
23 Thus[t] Moses spoke to the Israelites,[u] and they brought the curser outside the camp,[v] and they stoned him with stones, and the Israelites[w] did just as Yahweh had commanded Moses.
The Sermon on the Mount: On Judging Others
7 “Do not judge, so that you will not be judged. 2 For by what judgment you judge, you will be judged, and by what measure you measure out, it will be measured out to you. 3 And why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the beam of wood in your own eye? 4 Or how will you say to your brother, ‘Allow me to remove the speck from your eye,’ and behold, the beam of wood is in your own eye? 5 Hypocrite! First remove the beam of wood from your own eye and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye!
6 “Do not give what is holy to dogs, or throw your pearls in front of pigs, lest they trample them with their feet, and turn around and[a] tear you to pieces.
The Sermon on the Mount: Ask, Seek, Knock
7 “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and it will be opened for you. 8 For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. 9 Or what man is there among you, if his son will ask him for bread, will give him a stone? 10 Or also if he will ask for a fish, will give him a snake? 11 Therefore if you, although you[b] are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him? 12 Therefore in all things, whatever you want that people should do to you, thus also you do to them. For this is the law and the prophets.
