Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
Psalm 68[a]
For the music director, by David, a psalm, a song.
68 God springs into action.[b]
His enemies scatter;
his adversaries[c] run from him.[d]
2 As smoke is driven away by the wind, so you drive them away.[e]
As wax melts before fire,
so the wicked are destroyed before God.
3 But the godly[f] are happy;
they rejoice before God
and are overcome with joy.[g]
4 Sing to God! Sing praises to his name.
Exalt the one who rides on the clouds.[h]
For the Lord is his name.[i]
Rejoice before him.
5 He is a father to the fatherless
and an advocate for widows.[j]
God rules from his holy dwelling place.[k]
6 God settles in their own homes those who have been deserted;[l]
he frees prisoners and grants them prosperity.[m]
But sinful rebels live in the desert.[n]
7 O God, when you lead your people into battle,[o]
when you march through the wastelands,[p] (Selah)
8 the earth shakes.
Yes, the heavens pour down rain
before God, the God of Sinai,[q]
before God, the God of Israel.[r]
9 O God, you cause abundant showers to fall[s] on your chosen people.[t]
When they[u] are tired, you sustain them,[v]
10 for you live among them.[w]
You sustain the oppressed with your good blessings, O God.
Jeremiah Laments over the Coming Destruction
14 The people say,[a]
“Why are we just sitting here?
Let us gather together inside the fortified cities.[b]
Let us at least die there fighting,[c]
since the Lord our God has condemned us to die.
He has condemned us to drink the poison waters of judgment[d]
because we have sinned against him.[e]
15 We hoped for good fortune, but nothing good has come of it.
We hoped for a time of relief, but instead we experience terror.[f]
16 The snorting of the enemy’s horses
is already being heard in the city of Dan.
The sound of the neighing of their stallions[g]
causes the whole land to tremble with fear.
They are coming to destroy the land and everything in it.
They are coming to destroy[h] the cities and everyone who lives in them.”
17 The Lord says,[i]
“Yes indeed,[j] I am sending an enemy against you
that will be like poisonous snakes that cannot be charmed away.[k]
And they will inflict fatal wounds on you.”[l]
18 Then I said,[m]
“There is no cure[n] for my grief!
I am sick at heart!
19 I hear my dear people[o] crying out[p]
throughout the length and breadth of the land.[q]
They are crying, ‘Is the Lord no longer in Zion?
Is her divine King[r] no longer there?’”
The Lord answers,[s]
“Why then do they provoke me to anger with their images,
with their worthless foreign idols?[t]
20 They cry,[u] ‘Harvest time has come and gone and the summer is over,[v]
and still we have not been delivered.’
21 My heart is crushed because my dear people[w] are being crushed.[x]
I go about crying and grieving. I am overwhelmed with dismay.[y]
22 There is still medicinal ointment[z] available in Gilead!
There is still a physician there![aa]
Why then have my dear people[ab]
not been restored to health?[ac]
Restoration and Healing
40 Now when Jesus returned,[a] the crowd welcomed him, because they were all waiting for him. 41 Then[b] a man named Jairus, who was a leader[c] of the synagogue,[d] came up. Falling[e] at Jesus’ feet, he pleaded[f] with him to come to his house, 42 because he had an only daughter, about twelve years old, and she was dying.[g]
As Jesus was on his way, the crowds pressed[h] around him. 43 Now[i] a woman was there who had been suffering from a hemorrhage[j] for twelve years[k] but could not be healed by anyone. 44 She[l] came up behind Jesus[m] and touched the edge[n] of his cloak,[o] and at once the bleeding[p] stopped. 45 Then[q] Jesus asked,[r] “Who was it who touched me?” When they all denied it, Peter[s] said, “Master, the crowds are surrounding you and pressing[t] against you!” 46 But Jesus said, “Someone touched me, for I know that power has gone out[u] from me.” 47 When[v] the woman saw that she could not escape notice,[w] she came trembling and fell down before him. In[x] the presence of all the people, she explained why[y] she had touched him and how she had been immediately healed. 48 Then[z] he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well.[aa] Go in peace.”
49 While he was still speaking, someone from the synagogue leader’s[ab] house came and said, “Your daughter is dead; do not trouble the teacher any longer.” 50 But when Jesus heard this, he told[ac] him, “Do not be afraid; just believe, and she will be healed.”[ad] 51 Now when he came to the house, Jesus[ae] did not let anyone go in with him except Peter, John,[af] and James, and the child’s father and mother. 52 Now they were all[ag] wailing and mourning[ah] for her, but he said, “Stop your weeping; she is not dead but asleep!” 53 And they began making fun[ai] of him, because they knew[aj] that she was dead.[ak] 54 But Jesus[al] gently took her by the hand and said,[am] “Child, get up.” 55 Her[an] spirit returned,[ao] and she got up immediately. Then[ap] he told them to give her something to eat. 56 Her[aq] parents were astonished, but he ordered them to tell no one[ar] what had happened.
