Psalm 34:15-22

15 The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous,
and his ears are open to their cry for help.(A)
16 The face of the Lord is set
against those who do what is evil,(B)
to remove[a] all memory of them from the earth.(C)
17 The righteous[b] cry out, and the Lord hears,
and rescues them from all their troubles.(D)
18 The Lord is near the brokenhearted;
he saves those crushed in spirit.(E)

19 One who is righteous has many adversities,
but the Lord rescues him from them all.(F)
20 He protects all his bones;
not one of them is broken.(G)
21 Evil brings death to the wicked,
and those who hate the righteous will be punished.(H)
22 The Lord redeems the life of his servants,
and all who take refuge in him will not be punished.(I)

Joshua 22:1-9

Eastern Tribes Return Home

22 Joshua summoned the Reubenites, Gadites, and half the tribe of Manasseh and told them, “You have done everything Moses the Lord’s servant commanded you(A) and have obeyed me in everything I commanded you. You have not deserted your brothers even once this whole time but have carried out the requirement of the command of the Lord your God. Now that he has given your brothers rest, just as he promised them, return to your homes in your own land that Moses the Lord’s servant gave you across the Jordan. Only carefully obey the command and instruction that Moses the Lord’s servant gave you: to love the Lord your God, walk in all his ways, keep his commands, be loyal to him, and serve him with all your heart and all your soul.”(B)

Joshua blessed them and sent them on their way,(C) and they went to their homes. Moses had given territory to half the tribe of Manasseh in Bashan, but Joshua had given territory to the other half,[a] with their brothers, on the west side of the Jordan.(D) When Joshua sent them to their homes and blessed them, he said, “Return to your homes with great wealth: a huge number of cattle, and silver, gold, bronze, iron, and a large quantity of clothing. Share the spoil of your enemies with your brothers.”(E)

Eastern Tribes Build an Altar

The Reubenites, Gadites, and half the tribe of Manasseh left the Israelites at Shiloh in the land of Canaan to return to their own land of Gilead,(F) which they took possession of according to the Lord’s command through Moses.

1 Thessalonians 5:1-11

The Day of the Lord

About the times and the seasons:(A) Brothers and sisters, you do not need anything to be written to you. For you yourselves know very well that the day of the Lord(B) will come just like a thief(C) in the night. When they say, “Peace and security,” then sudden destruction(D) will come upon them, like labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. But you, brothers and sisters, are not in the dark, for this day to surprise you like a thief.(E) For you are all children of light and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or the darkness.(F) So then, let us not sleep, like the rest, but let us stay awake and be self-controlled. For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night. But since we belong to the day, let us be self-controlled(G) and put on the armor(H) of faith and love, and a helmet(I) of the hope of salvation. For God did not appoint us to wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord(J) Jesus Christ,(K) 10 who died for us,(L) so that whether we are awake or asleep,(M) we may live together with him.(N) 11 Therefore encourage one another and build each other up as you are already doing.
