Psalm 69[a]

Cry of Anguish in Distress

For the director.[b] According to “Lilies.” Of David.

[c]Save me, my God,
    for the waters have risen to my neck.
I am sinking in muddy depths
    and can find no foothold.
I have fallen into deep waters,
    and the floods[d] overwhelm me.
I am exhausted from crying out;
    my throat is parched.
My eyes have been worn out
    searching for my God.
More numerous than the hairs of my head
    are those who hate me for no reason.[e]
Many are those who seek to destroy me,
    and they are treacherous.
How can I restore
    what I have not stolen?

Psalm 69:30-36

30 But I am filled with pain and suffering;
    may your saving power, O God, raise me up.
31 [a]I will praise the name of God with a song
    and glorify him with a hymn of thanksgiving.
32 This will gratify the Lord more than an ox
    or a young bull with horns and hoofs:[b]
33 “Let the poor[c] see this and rejoice;
    let those who seek God take heart.
34 For the Lord hears the needy
    and does not turn his back on captives.
35 Let the heavens and the earth offer praise,
    the seas and everything that moves therein.”
36 For God will deliver Zion
    and rebuild the cities of Judah.
His people will live there and possess it;

Genesis 17:1-13

Chapter 17

The Covenant and Its Sign.[a] When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to him and said, “I am God Almighty.[b] Walk before me and be blameless. I will establish my covenant between me and you and I will multiply you greatly.”

Abram immediately fell down upon his face. God said to him, “On my part, behold, my covenant with you: you will be the father of many nations. You will no longer be called Abram, but Abraham, for I will make you the father of many nations.[c] I will make you very, very fruitful. I will make nations come from you, and you shall give birth to kings. I will establish my covenant with you for all generations. It will be an eternal covenant. I will be your God and the God of your descendants after you. I will give you and your descendants after you this land where you are now an alien. All of the land of Canaan shall be your eternal possession. I will be your God.”

God said to Abraham, “On your part, you must observe my covenant, you and your descendants after you, for all time. 10 This is my covenant that you must observe, a covenant between me and your descendants after you: every male among you must be circumcised. 11 You shall circumcise the flesh of the male member. This shall be the sign of the covenant between me and you. 12 Whenever baby boys are eight days old, they will be circumcised, whether they are your own children or the children of those whom you bought and who are foreigners and not of your bloodline. 13 You must circumcise those who are born in your house and those who are bought by you. Thus, my covenant will be marked in your flesh as an eternal covenant.

Romans 4:1-12

Abraham Justified through Faith[a]

Chapter 4

Justified through Faith, Not Works.[b] What then are we to say about Abraham, our ancestor according to the flesh? If Abraham was justified by the works he did, he has good reason to boast, but not in the eyes of God. For what does Scripture say? “Abraham placed his faith in God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.”[c]

Now when a man works, his wages are not regarded as a gift but as something that is due to him. However, when someone who does not work places his faith in one who justifies the godless, such faith is reckoned as righteousness. [d]In the same way, David speaks of the blessedness of the one to whom God attributes righteousness apart from works:

“Blessed are those whose iniquities are forgiven
    and whose sins are blotted out.
Blessed is the man
    to whom the Lord imputes no guilt.”

Justified before Being Circumcised.[e] Is this blessedness granted only to the circumcised, or does it apply to the uncircumcised as well? We have asserted that Abraham’s faith “was credited to him as righteousness.” 10 How was it credited? Was it when he was circumcised or uncircumcised? Not when he was circumcised, but when he was uncircumcised.

11 Abraham received the sign of circumcision as a seal of the righteousness that he had by faith while he was still uncircumcised. In this way, he was the father of all who believe without being circumcised and who thus have righteousness credited to them. 12 Therefore, he is the father of the circumcised who have not only received circumcision but also follow that path of faith traversed by Abraham before he was circumcised.
