Chapter 7

David’s Concern for the Ark.[a] When King David was settled in his palace and the Lord had granted him rest from all his enemies surrounding him, he said to the prophet Nathan: “Here I am, dwelling in a house of cedar, while the Ark of God dwells in a tent.” Nathan replied to the king: “Do not hesitate to do whatever you have in mind, for the Lord is with you.”

However, that same night the word of the Lord came to Nathan: “Go and tell my servant David: ‘Thus says the Lord: “Are you determined to build a house for me to dwell in? I have not dwelled in a house from the day I brought the Israelites out of Egypt to this very day. I have been moving from place to place while living in a tent and a tabernacle. In all of my travels everywhere among the Israelites, did I ever ask any of the judges whom I had appointed to shepherd my people Israel why they had never built me a house of cedar?” ’ ”

The Lord’s Promises.

“Now then, this is what you are to say to my servant David: ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts: “I was the one who took you from the pastures and your work of caring for the sheep to be the ruler of my people Israel. I have been with you wherever you went, and I have destroyed all of your enemies who dared to challenge you. Moreover, I intend to make your name as famous as the names of the greatest men on the earth.

10 “ ‘ “I also shall provide a place for my people Israel, and there I will plant them so that they may dwell there and never again be disturbed. Nor will the wicked afflict them anymore, as was the case formerly, 11 from the time that I appointed judges over my people Israel. I will grant you rest from all of your enemies.

“ ‘ “Moreover, I, the Lord, promise that I will establish a royal house for you.

2 Samuel 7:16

16 Your descendants and your kingdom will stand firm forever before me, and your throne shall endure forever.” ’ ”

Luke 1:46-55

46 The Canticle of Mary.[a] And Mary said:

“My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord
47     and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.
48 For he has looked with favor on the lowliness of his servant;
    henceforth all generations will call me blessed.
49 The Mighty One has done great things for me,
    and holy is his name.
50 His mercy is shown from age to age
    to those who fear him.
51 He has shown the strength of his arm,
    he has routed those who are arrogant in the desires of their hearts.
52 He has brought down the mighty from their thrones
    and lifted up the lowly.
53 He has filled the hungry with good things
    and sent the rich away empty.
54 He has come to the aid of Israel his servant,
    ever mindful of his merciful love,
55 according to the promises he made to our ancestors,
    to Abraham and to his descendants forever.”

Psalm 89:1-4

Psalm 89[a]

Prayer for the Fulfillment of God’s Promise

A maskil[b] of Ethan the Ezrahite.

[c]I will sing forever of the Lord’s kindness;
    with my lips I will proclaim your faithfulness[d]
    throughout the generations.
You said, “My kindness lasts forever;
    my faithfulness is as firmly established as the heavens.
“I have made a covenant with my chosen one;
    I have sworn to my servant David:

Psalm 89:19-26

19 For the Lord is our shield,
    the Holy One of Israel, our King.
20 [a]On one occasion you spoke in a vision[b]
    and said to your faithful servants:
“I have appointed as leader one who is mighty;
    I have exalted one chosen from the people.
21 I have found David, my servant,
    and with my holy oil I have anointed him.
22 “My hand will sustain him;
    my arm will make him strong.
23 No enemy will overcome him;
    no one who is wicked will oppress him.
24 “I will crush his foes before him
    and strike down those who hate him.
25 My faithfulness and my kindness will be with him;
    through my name his horn will be exalted.
26 “I will stretch his hand as far as the sea
    and his right hand as far as the rivers.[c]

Romans 16:25-27

Glory to God through Jesus Christ[a]

25 Now to him who has the power to strengthen you
in accordance with the gospel that I preach
and the proclamation of Jesus Christ,
according to the revelation of the mystery
that was kept secret for long ages
26 but is now revealed,
and through the prophetic writings is made known to all the nations
according to the command of the eternal God
to bring them to the obedience of faith—
27 to God who alone is wise,
through Jesus Christ
be glory forever! Amen.

Luke 1:26-38

26 Announcement of the Birth of Jesus.[a] In the sixth month,[b] the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, 27 to a virgin[c] betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary.

28 The angel came to her and said, “Hail, full of grace![d] The Lord is with you.” 29 But she was greatly troubled by his words and wondered in her heart what this salutation could mean.

30 Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31 Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will name him Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his ancestor David. 33 He will rule over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”

34 Mary said to the angel, “How will this be, since I am a virgin?”[e] 35 The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore, the child to be born will be holy, and he will be called the Son of God. 36 [f]And behold, your cousin Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son, and she who was called barren is now in her sixth month, 37 for nothing will be impossible for God.”

38 Then Mary said, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord. Let it be done to me according to your word.” After this, the angel departed from her.
