Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
David Plans to Build a Temple
7 (A)Now it came about when the king lived in his house, and the Lord had given him rest on every side from all his enemies, 2 that the king said to (B)Nathan the prophet, “See now, I dwell in (C)a house of cedar, but the ark of God (D)dwells within tent curtains.” 3 Nathan said to the king, “(E)Go, do all that is in your mind, for the Lord is with you.”
4 But in the same night the word of the Lord came to Nathan, saying, 5 “Go and say to My servant David, ‘Thus says the Lord, “(F)Are you the one who should build Me a house to dwell in? 6 For (G)I have not dwelt in a house since the day I brought up the sons of Israel from Egypt, even to this day; but I have been moving about (H)in a tent, even in a [a]tabernacle. 7 (I)Wherever I have gone with all the sons of Israel, did I speak a word with one of the tribes of Israel, (J)which I commanded to shepherd My people Israel, saying, ‘Why have you not built Me a house of cedar?’”’
God’s Covenant with David
8 “Now therefore, thus you shall say to My servant David, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, “(K)I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, (L)to be ruler over My people Israel. 9 (M)I have been with you wherever you have gone and (N)have cut off all your enemies from before you; and I will make you a great name, like the names of the great men who are on the earth. 10 I will also appoint a place for My people Israel and (O)will plant them, that they may live in their own place and not be disturbed again, (P)nor will the [b]wicked afflict them any more as formerly, 11 even (Q)from the day that I commanded judges to be over My people Israel; and (R)I will give you rest from all your enemies. The Lord also declares to you that (S)the Lord will make a house for you.
The Magnificat
46 And Mary said:
“(A)My soul [a](B)exalts the Lord,
47 And (C)my spirit has rejoiced in (D)God my Savior.
48 “For (E)He has had regard for the humble state of His [b]bondslave;
For behold, from this time on all generations will count me (F)blessed.
49 “For the Mighty One has done great things for me;
And holy is His name.
50 “(G)And His mercy is [c]upon generation after generation
Toward those who fear Him.
51 “(H)He has done [d]mighty deeds with His arm;
He has scattered those who were proud in the [e]thoughts of their heart.
52 “He has brought down rulers from their thrones,
And has (I)exalted those who were humble.
53 “(J)He has filled the hungry with good things;
And sent away the rich empty-handed.
54 “He has given help to Israel His servant,
[f]In remembrance of His mercy,
55 (K)As He spoke to our fathers,
(L)To Abraham and his [g]descendants forever.”
The Lord’s Covenant with David, and Israel’s Afflictions.
A [a]Maskil of [b]Ethan [c]the Ezrahite.
89 I will (A)sing of the lovingkindness of the Lord forever;
To all generations I will (B)make known Your (C)faithfulness with my mouth.
2 For I have said, “(D)Lovingkindness will be built up forever;
In the heavens You will establish Your (E)faithfulness.”
3 “I have made a covenant with (F)My chosen;
I have (G)sworn to David My servant,
4 I will establish your (H)seed forever
And build up your (I)throne to all generations.” [d]Selah.
19 [a]Once You spoke in vision to Your godly [b]ones,
And said, “I have [c]given help to one who is (A)mighty;
I have exalted one (B)chosen from the people.
20 “I have (C)found David My servant;
With My holy (D)oil I have anointed him,
21 With whom (E)My hand will be established;
My arm also will (F)strengthen him.
22 “The enemy will not [d]deceive him,
Nor the [e](G)son of wickedness afflict him.
23 “But I shall (H)crush his adversaries before him,
And strike those who hate him.
24 “My (I)faithfulness and My lovingkindness will be with him,
And in My name his (J)horn will be exalted.
25 “I shall also set his hand (K)on the sea
And his right hand on the rivers.
26 “He will cry to Me, ‘You are (L)my Father,
My God, and the (M)rock of my salvation.’
25 (A)Now to Him who is able to establish you (B)according to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of (C)the mystery which has been kept secret for (D)long ages past, 26 but now is manifested, and by (E)the Scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the eternal God, has been made known to all the nations, leading to (F)obedience of faith; 27 to the only wise God, through Jesus Christ, (G)be the glory forever. Amen.
Jesus’ Birth Foretold
26 Now in the sixth month the angel (A)Gabriel was sent from God to a city in Galilee called (B)Nazareth, 27 to (C)a virgin [a]engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, (D)of the [b]descendants of David; and the virgin’s name was [c]Mary. 28 And coming in, he said to her, “Greetings, [d]favored one! The Lord [e]is with you.” 29 But she (E)was very perplexed at this statement, and kept pondering what kind of salutation this was. 30 The angel said to her, “(F)Do not be afraid, Mary; for you have found favor with God. 31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you (G)shall name Him Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of (H)the Most High; and the Lord God will give Him (I)the throne of His father David; 33 (J)and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, (K)and His kingdom will have no end.” 34 Mary said to the angel, “How [f]can this be, since I [g]am a virgin?” 35 The angel answered and said to her, “(L)The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of (M)the Most High will overshadow you; and for that reason (N)the [h]holy Child shall be called (O)the Son of God. 36 And behold, even your relative Elizabeth has also conceived a son in her old age; and [i]she who was called barren is now in her sixth month. 37 For [j](P)nothing will be impossible with God.” 38 And Mary said, “Behold, the [k]bondslave of the Lord; may it be done to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.
