Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
Waw
41 Let your acts of loyal love also come to me, O Yahweh,
your salvation according to your word.[a]
42 Then I will have an answer for the one who taunts me,
for I trust your word.
43 And do not snatch the word of truth utterly from my mouth,
for I hope in your ordinances.
44 So I will heed your law continually,
forever and ever.
45 And I will go about freely,[b]
for I have sought your precepts.
46 And I will speak of your testimonies before kings,
and will not be ashamed.
47 And I will take delight in your commands,
which I love.
48 And I will lift up my hands[c] to your commands, which I love,
and I will meditate on your statutes.
10 And I stayed on the mountain just as during the former forty days[a] and forty nights,[b] and Yahweh listened to me also on that occasion;[c] Yahweh was not willing to destroy you. 11 And Yahweh said to me, ‘Come, continue[d] your journey before the people, [e] so that you may go and take possession of the land that I swore to their ancestors[f] to give to them.’
12 And now, Israel, what is Yahweh your God asking[g] from you, except[h] to revere Yahweh your God, to go[i] in all his ways and to love him and to serve Yahweh your God with all your heart and with all your soul,[j] 13 to keep the commandments of Yahweh and his statutes that I am commanding you today for your own good.[k] 14 Look! For to Yahweh your God belong[l] heaven and the highest heavens,[m] the earth and all that is in it. 15 Yet[n] to your ancestors[o] Yahweh was very attached, so as to love them, and so he chose their offspring after them, namely you, from all the peoples, as it is today.[p] 16 So you shall circumcise the foreskin of your heart, and do not be stubborn.[q] 17 For Yahweh your God, he is God of the gods and Lord of the lords, the great and mighty God, the awesome one who is not partial,[r] and he does not take bribes. 18 And he executes justice for the orphan and widow, and he is one who loves the alien, to give to them food and clothing. 19 And you shall love the alien, for you were aliens in the land of Egypt. 20 Yahweh your God, you shall revere him, you shall serve him, and to him you shall cling, and by his name you shall swear. 21 He is your praise, and he is your God, who has done with you these great and awesome things that your eyes have seen. 22 With only seventy persons your ancestors[s] went down to Egypt, but now Yahweh your God has made you as the stars of the heaven with respect to multitude.[t]
Faith and Works
14 What is the benefit, my brothers, if someone says that he has faith but does not have works? That faith is not able to save him, is it?[a] 15 If a brother or a sister is poorly clothed and lacking food for the day, 16 and one of you should say to them, “Go in peace, keep warm and eat well[b],” but does not give them what is necessary for the body, what is the benefit? 17 Thus also faith, if it does not have works, is dead by itself.
18 But someone will say, “You have faith and I have works.”[c] Show me your faith apart from your[d] works, and I will show you my[e] faith by my works. 19 You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe, and shudder! 20 But do you want to know, O foolish person, that faith apart from works is useless? 21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he[f] offered up his son Isaac on the altar? 22 You see that faith was working together with his works, and by the works the faith was perfected. 23 And the scripture was fulfilled that says, “And Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him for righteousness,”[g] and he was called God’s friend. 24 You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone. 25 And likewise was not Rahab the prostitute also justified by works when she[h] welcomed the messengers and sent them out by a different route? 26 For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead.
