Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
Yahweh Is My Rock and My Fortress
For the choir director. Of the servant of Yahweh, of David, [a]who spoke to Yahweh the words of this song in the day that Yahweh delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul.
18 He said, “I love You, O Yahweh, (A)my strength.”
2 Yahweh is (B)my [b]rock and (C)my fortress and my (D)deliverer,
My God, my rock, in whom I take refuge;
My (E)shield and the (F)horn of my salvation, my (G)stronghold.
3 I call upon Yahweh, who is (H)worthy to be praised,
And I am (I)saved from my enemies.
4 The (J)cords of death encompassed me,
And the (K)torrents of vileness [c]terrified me.
5 The (L)cords of Sheol surrounded me;
The snares of death confronted me.
6 In my (M)distress I called upon Yahweh,
And cried to my God for help;
He heard my voice (N)out of His temple,
And my (O)cry for help before Him came into His ears.
7 Then the (P)earth shook and quaked;
And the (Q)foundations of the mountains were trembling
And were shaken, because He was angry.
8 Smoke went up [d]out of His nostrils,
And (R)fire from His mouth devoured;
Coals were kindled by it.
9 He (S)bowed the heavens and came down
With thick (T)darkness under His feet.
10 He rode upon a (U)cherub and flew;
And He sped upon the (V)wings of the wind.
11 He made (W)darkness His hiding place, (X)His [e]canopy around Him,
Darkness of waters, thick clouds of the skies.
12 From the (Y)brightness before Him passed His thick clouds,
Hailstones and (Z)coals of fire.
13 Yahweh also (AA)thundered in the heavens,
And the Most High gave forth His voice,
Hailstones and coals of fire.
14 He (AB)sent out His arrows, and scattered them,
And lightning flashes in abundance, and [f]threw them into confusion.
15 Then the (AC)channels of water appeared,
And the foundations of the world were [g]laid bare
At Your (AD)rebuke, O Yahweh,
At the blast of the (AE)breath of Your nostrils.
16 He (AF)sent from on high, He took me;
He drew me out of (AG)many waters.
17 He (AH)delivered me from my strong enemy,
And from those who hated me, for they were (AI)too mighty for me.
18 They confronted me in (AJ)the day of my disaster,
But (AK)Yahweh was my support.
19 He brought me forth also into a (AL)broad place;
He rescued me, because (AM)He delighted in me.
11 In the (A)six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, on the seventeenth day of the month, on this day all (B)the fountains of the great deep split open, and the [a]floodgates of the sky were opened. 12 (C)Then the rain [b]came upon the earth for forty days and forty nights.
13 On this very day (D)Noah and Shem and Ham and Japheth, the sons of Noah, and Noah’s wife and the three wives of his sons with them, entered the ark, 14 they and every beast after its kind, and all the cattle after [c]their kind, and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth after its kind, and every bird after its kind—every [d]fowl, every winged creature. 15 So they came to Noah into the ark, (E)by twos of all flesh in which was the breath of life. 16 And those that entered, male and female of all flesh, entered as God had commanded him; and Yahweh closed it behind him.
17 Then the flood [e]came upon the earth for (F)forty days, and the water multiplied and lifted up the ark, so that it rose above the earth. 18 And the water prevailed and multiplied greatly upon the earth, and the ark went on the [f]surface of the water. 19 And the water prevailed more and more upon the earth, so that all the high mountains under all the heavens were covered. 20 The water prevailed [g]fifteen cubits higher, (G)and the mountains were covered. 21 (H)And all flesh that [h]moved on the earth breathed its last, that is birds and cattle and beasts and every swarming thing that swarms upon the earth, as well as all mankind. 22 All (I)in whose nostrils was the breath of the spirit of life—of all that was on the dry land—died. 23 Thus He blotted out [i]every living thing that was upon the face of the land, from man to animals to creeping things and to birds of the [j]sky, and they were blotted out from the earth; and only (J)Noah remained, and those that were with him in the ark. 24 (K)And the water prevailed upon the earth 150 days.
The Water Dries Up
8 Then (L)God remembered Noah and all the beasts and all the cattle that were with him in the ark; and (M)God caused a wind to pass over the earth, and the water subsided. 2 Also (N)the fountains of the deep and the [k]floodgates of the sky were closed, and (O)the rain from the sky was restrained; 3 and the water receded from the earth, going forth and returning, and at the end (P)of 150 days the water decreased. 4 In the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, (Q)the ark rested upon the mountains of Ararat. 5 Now the water decreased steadily until the tenth month; in the tenth month, on the first day of the month, the tops of the mountains appeared.
4 For (A)if God did not spare angels who sinned, but cast them into the [a]pit and (B)delivered them to chains of darkness, being kept for judgment; 5 and did not spare (C)the ancient world, but preserved (D)Noah, a [b]preacher of righteousness, with seven others, when He brought a (E)flood upon the world of the ungodly; 6 and if He (F)condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to destruction by reducing them to ashes, having made them an (G)example to those who would (H)live ungodly lives thereafter; 7 and if He (I)rescued righteous Lot, oppressed by the (J)sensual conduct of (K)unprincipled men 8 (for by what he saw and heard that (L)righteous man, while living among them, felt his righteous soul tormented day after day by their lawless deeds), 9 (M)then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from [c]trial, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment for the (N)day of judgment, 10 and especially those who (O)go after the flesh in its corrupt lust and (P)despise authority.
Daring, (Q)self-willed, they do not tremble when they (R)blaspheme [d]glorious ones,
