Revised Common Lectionary (Complementary)
BOOK TWO
Psalms 42–72
Yearning for God in the Midst of Distresses
To the Chief Musician. A [a]Contemplation of the sons of Korah.
42 As the deer [b]pants for the water brooks,
So pants my soul for You, O God.
2 (A)My soul thirsts for God, for the (B)living God.
When shall I come and [c]appear before God?
3 (C)My tears have been my food day and night,
While they continually say to me,
(D)“Where is your God?”
4 When I remember these things,
(E)I pour out my soul within me.
For I used to go with the multitude;
(F)I went with them to the house of God,
With the voice of joy and praise,
With a multitude that kept a pilgrim feast.
5 (G)Why are you [d]cast down, O my soul?
And why are you disquieted within me?
(H)Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him
[e]For the help of His countenance.
6 [f]O my God, my soul is cast down within me;
Therefore I will remember You from the land of the Jordan,
And from the heights of Hermon,
From [g]the Hill Mizar.
7 Deep calls unto deep at the noise of Your waterfalls;
(I)All Your waves and billows have gone over me.
8 The Lord will (J)command His lovingkindness in the daytime,
And (K)in the night His song shall be with me—
A prayer to the God of my life.
Future Recovery of Wisdom
17 Is it not yet a very little while
Till (A)Lebanon shall be turned into a fruitful field,
And the fruitful field be esteemed as a forest?
18 (B)In that day the deaf shall hear the words of the book,
And the eyes of the blind shall see out of obscurity and out of darkness.
19 (C)The humble also shall increase their joy in the Lord,
And (D)the poor among men shall rejoice
In the Holy One of Israel.
20 For the [a]terrible one is brought to nothing,
(E)The scornful one is consumed,
And all who (F)watch for iniquity are cut off—
21 Who make a man an offender by a word,
And (G)lay a snare for him who reproves in the gate,
And turn aside the just (H)by empty words.
22 Therefore thus says the Lord, (I)who redeemed Abraham, concerning the house of Jacob:
“Jacob shall not now be (J)ashamed,
Nor shall his face now grow pale;
23 But when he sees his children,
(K)The work of My hands, in his midst,
They will hallow My name,
And hallow the Holy One of Jacob,
And fear the God of Israel.
24 These also (L)who erred in spirit will come to understanding,
And those who complained will learn doctrine.”
Continuing Power in the Church
12 And (A)through the hands of the apostles many signs and wonders were done among the people. (B)And they were all with one accord in Solomon’s Porch. 13 Yet (C)none of the rest dared join them, (D)but the people esteemed them highly. 14 And believers were increasingly added to the Lord, multitudes of both men and women, 15 so that they brought the sick out into the streets and laid them on beds and couches, (E)that at least the shadow of Peter passing by might fall on some of them. 16 Also a multitude gathered from the surrounding cities to Jerusalem, bringing (F)sick people and those who were tormented by unclean spirits, and they were all healed.
