Psalm 64[a]

Treacherous Conspirators Punished by God

For the leader. A psalm of David.

I

O God, hear my anguished voice;
    from a dreadful foe protect my life.
Hide me from the malicious crowd,
    the mob of evildoers.
They sharpen their tongues like swords,
    bend their bows of poison words.(A)
They shoot at the innocent from ambush,
    they shoot him in a moment and do not fear.
They resolve on their wicked plan;
    they conspire to set snares;
    they say: “Who will see us?”
They devise wicked schemes,
    conceal the schemes they devise;
    the designs of their hearts are hidden.(B)

II

God shoots an arrow at them;
    in a moment they are struck down.(C)
They are brought down by their own tongues;
    all who see them flee.(D)
10 Every person fears and proclaims God’s actions,
    they ponder his deeds.
11 The righteous rejoices and takes refuge in the Lord;
    all the upright give praise.(E)

Ezekiel 32:1-10

Chapter 32

Lament over Pharaoh. On the first day of the twelfth month in the twelfth year,[a] the word of the Lord came to me: Son of man, utter a lament over Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, and say to him:

You liken yourself to a lion among nations,
    but you are like the monster in the sea!
Thrashing about in your streams,
    churning the water with your feet,
    polluting the streams.(A)
Thus says the Lord God:
I will cast my net over you
    by assembling many armies,
    and I will hoist you up in my mesh.
I will hurl you onto the land,
    cast you into an open field.
I will make all the birds of the sky
    roost upon you,
The beasts of the whole earth
    gorge themselves on you.
I will strew your flesh on the mountains,
    and fill the valleys with your corpse.(B)
I will drench the land,
    pouring out your blood on the mountain;
    filling up the ravines with you.
When I extinguish you,
    I will cover the heavens
    and darken all its stars.
The sun I will cover with clouds;
    the moon will not give light.(C)
All the shining lights in the heavens
    I will darken over you;
I will spread darkness over your land—
    oracle of the Lord God.
I will trouble the hearts
    of many peoples,
When I bring you captive
    among the nations,
    to lands you do not know.
10 I will fill many nations with horror;
    their kings will shudder at you,
    when I brandish my sword in their faces.
They will tremble violently
    fearing for their lives on the day of your fall.(D)

Luke 9:37-43

37 (A)On the next day, when they came down from the mountain, a large crowd met him. 38 There was a man in the crowd who cried out, “Teacher, I beg you, look at my son; he is my only child. 39 For a spirit seizes him and he suddenly screams and it convulses him until he foams at the mouth; it releases him only with difficulty, wearing him out. 40 I begged your disciples to cast it out but they could not.” 41 Jesus said in reply, “O faithless and perverse generation, how long will I be with you and endure you? Bring your son here.” 42 As he was coming forward, the demon threw him to the ground in a convulsion; but Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, healed the boy, and returned him to his father. 43 And all were astonished by the majesty of God.

The Second Prediction of the Passion.(B) While they were all amazed at his every deed, he said to his disciples,
