Psalm 64

Psalm 64[a]

Treacherous Conspirators Punished by God

For the leader. A psalm of David.

I

O God, hear my anguished voice;
    from a dreadful foe protect my life.
Hide me from the malicious crowd,
    the mob of evildoers.
They sharpen their tongues like swords,
    bend their bows of poison words.(A)
They shoot at the innocent from ambush,
    they shoot him in a moment and do not fear.
They resolve on their wicked plan;
    they conspire to set snares;
    they say: “Who will see us?”
They devise wicked schemes,
    conceal the schemes they devise;
    the designs of their hearts are hidden.(B)

II

God shoots an arrow at them;
    in a moment they are struck down.(C)
They are brought down by their own tongues;
    all who see them flee.(D)
10 Every person fears and proclaims God’s actions,
    they ponder his deeds.
11 The righteous rejoices and takes refuge in the Lord;
    all the upright give praise.(E)

Job 19:1-22

Chapter 19

Job’s Fifth Reply. [a]Then Job answered and said:

How long will you afflict my spirit,
    grind me down with words?
These ten times you have humiliated me,
    have assailed me without shame!
Even if it were true that I am at fault,
    my fault would remain with me;
If truly you exalt yourselves at my expense,
    and use my shame as an argument against me,
Know then that it is God who has dealt unfairly with me,
    and compassed me round with his net.
If I cry out “Violence!” I am not answered.(A)
    I shout for help, but there is no justice.
He has barred my way and I cannot pass;
    veiled my path in darkness;
He has stripped me of my glory,
    taken the diadem from my brow.
10 He breaks me down on every side, and I am gone;
    he has uprooted my hope like a tree.
11 He has kindled his wrath against me;
    he counts me one of his enemies.(B)
12 His troops advance as one;
    they build up their road to attack me,
    encamp around my tent.
13 My family has withdrawn from me,(C)
    my friends are wholly estranged.
14 My relatives and companions neglect me,
    my guests have forgotten me.
15 Even my maidservants consider me a stranger;
    I am a foreigner in their sight.
16 I call my servant, but he gives no answer,
    though I plead aloud with him.
17 My breath is abhorrent to my wife;(D)
    I am loathsome to my very children.
18 Even young children despise me;
    when I appear, they speak against me.
19 All my intimate friends hold me in horror;
    those whom I loved have turned against me!(E)
20 My bones cling to my skin,
    and I have escaped by the skin of my teeth.[b]
21 Pity me, pity me, you my friends,
    for the hand of God has struck me!
22 Why do you pursue me like God,
    and prey insatiably upon me?

Ephesians 2:11-22

11 Therefore, remember that at one time you, Gentiles in the flesh, called the uncircumcision by those called the circumcision, which is done in the flesh by human hands, 12 were at that time without Christ, alienated from the community of Israel[a] and strangers to the covenants of promise, without hope and without God in the world.(A) 13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have become near by the blood of Christ.(B)

14 [b]For he is our peace, he who made both one and broke down the dividing wall of enmity, through his flesh,(C) 15 abolishing the law with its commandments and legal claims, that he might create in himself one new person[c] in place of the two, thus establishing peace,(D) 16 and might reconcile both with God, in one body, through the cross, putting that enmity to death by it.(E) 17 He came and preached peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near,(F) 18 for through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father.(G)

19 So then you are no longer strangers and sojourners, but you are fellow citizens with the holy ones and members of the household of God,(H) 20 built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets,(I) with Christ Jesus himself as the capstone.[d] 21 Through him the whole structure is held together and grows into a temple sacred in the Lord;(J) 22 in him you also are being built together into a dwelling place of God in the Spirit.(K)
