Version
Psalm 37:23-40

23 The Lord makes a man’s steps secure
    when he approves of his conduct.
24 Even if he stumbles, he will never fall headlong,
    for the Lord holds him by the hand.[a]
25 From my youth until my present old age,
    I have never seen the righteous man abandoned
    or his children reduced to begging for bread.
26 He is always compassionate and generous in lending,
    and his children will be blessed.[b]
27 If you shun evil and do good,
    you will dwell in the land forever.
28 For the Lord loves the just,[c]
    and he will not forsake his faithful ones.
Those who follow evil paths will be destroyed,
    and the children of the wicked will be cut off,
29 whereas the righteous will inherit the land
    and dwell in it forever.[d]
30 [e]The mouth of the righteous man utters wisdom,
    and his tongue speaks what is right.
31 The law of his God is in his heart,
    and his steps do not waver.
32 [f]The wicked man keeps close watch on the righteous
    and seeks an opportunity to kill him.
33 But the Lord will not abandon the righteous
    to the power of the wicked,
nor will he allow him to be condemned
    when he is brought to trial.
34 Wait for the Lord
    and follow the path he has laid out;
then he will exalt you to inherit the land,
    and you will see the destruction of the wicked.
35 [g]I have seen a wicked man inflicting terror
    and towering like a verdant tree.
36 I passed by again, and he was gone;
    I searched for him, but he was not to be found.
37 [h]Pay attention to the innocent and behold the upright,
    for the man of peace will have a future.
38 But the wicked will be completely destroyed,
    and their children will be cut off.
39 [i]The salvation of the righteous is from the Lord;
    he is their refuge in times of trouble.
40 The Lord will help them and deliver them;
    he will rescue them from the wicked and save them
    because they flee to him for refuge.

1 Samuel 8:1-18

The Inauguration of the Monarchy[a]

Chapter 8

The People Request a King. When Samuel grew old, he appointed his sons as judges over Israel. The name of the older was Joel, and the name of the younger was Abijah, and they were judges at Beer-sheba. The sons did not walk in his ways. They sought dishonest gains, took bribes, and perverted justice.

All of the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah. They said to him, “You are now old, and your sons are not following in your path. Appoint a king over us, just like all the other nations have.”

It displeased Samuel when they said to him, “Appoint a king over us,” so Samuel prayed to the Lord. The Lord said to him, “Listen to everything that the people have requested of you. It is not you whom the people have rejected, they have rejected me as their king. They have done this from the day that I brought them up out of Egypt to this very day. They have rejected me and served other gods, just as they have rejected you. So grant their request, but warn them solemnly and inform them what the king who reigns over them will do.”

10 The Rule of a King. Samuel told the people who were asking for a king everything that the Lord had said. 11 He said, “This is what the king who reigns over you will do. He will take away your sons to serve him on his chariots and his horses, and they will run in front of his chariots.[b] 12 He will appoint some as commanders of groups of thousands, and others as commanders of groups of fifty. He will set some to plowing his fields and reaping his harvests. Others will make weapons and equipment for his chariots. 13 He will take your daughters to be makers of perfumes and cooks and bakers. 14 He will take the best of your fields, vineyards, and olive groves and he will give them to his attendants. 15 He will take a tenth of your grain harvest and the harvest of your vineyards and give it to his officials and his attendants. 16 He will take your menservants and your maidservants, the best of your cattle and donkeys, and use them for his own work. 17 He will take a tenth of your flocks, and you, yourselves, will become his slaves. 18 When that day comes, you will cry out for help because of the king that you have chosen, but on that day the Lord will not listen to you.”[c]

Hebrews 6:1-12

Chapter 6

[a]Therefore, let us leave behind the basic teaching about Christ and advance toward maturity. We must not be forever laying the foundation: repentance for actions that lead to death, faith in God, instruction about baptisms and the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. And we will do so, if God permits.

[b]For when people have once been enlightened and have experienced the heavenly gift, and have shared in the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the age to come, and then in spite of all this have fallen away, it is impossible to restore them again to repentance. For they are crucifying the Son of God for themselves once again and are holding him up to contempt.

When the soil drinks in the rain that repeatedly falls on it and produces a crop that is useful to those for whom it was cultivated, it receives a blessing from God. However, if it brings forth thorns and thistles, it is worthless, and a curse hangs over it. It will end by being burned.

But, beloved, in spite of what we have just said, we are convinced that your status is far superior as you proceed to salvation. 10 For God would not be so unjust as to ignore your work and the love that you have shown for his name by the services you have rendered to the saints and still continue to render.

11 However, we desire that each one of you will show the same diligence until you have achieved the ultimate fulfillment of your hope. 12 We do not want you to allow yourselves to become sluggish; rather, we want you to become imitators of those who through faith and patience are now heirs of the promises.
