Psalm 81:1-10

An Appeal from God to Israel

For the music director; on the Gittith. Of Asaph.[a]

81 Shout out to God our strength;
shout joyfully to the God of Jacob.
Lift up a song and strike[b] the tambourine,
the pleasant lyre, together with the harp.
Blow the horn at new moon,
at full moon, for our feast day,
because it is a statute for Israel,
an ordinance of the God of Jacob.
He made it a statute[c] in Joseph
when he went out against the land of Egypt,
where I heard a language I did not know.[d]
“I removed his shoulder from a burden.
His hands were freed from the basket.
In this[e] trouble you called, and I rescued you.
Within the secret place of thunder I answered you;
I tested you at the waters of Meribah. Selah
Hear, O my people, and I will admonish you;
O Israel, if you would but listen to me.
There shall be no strange god among you,
and you shall not bow down to a foreign god.
10 I am Yahweh your God,
who brought you up from the land of Egypt.
Open wide your mouth and I will fill it.

Leviticus 24:5-9

“And you shall take finely milled flour, and you shall bake with it twelve ring-shaped bread cakes: each one shall be two-tenths of an ephah. And you shall place them in two rows, six to the row, on the pure gold[a] table before[b] Yahweh. And you shall put pure frankincense on each[c] row so that[d] it shall be for the bread as a memorial offering, an offering made by fire for Yahweh. On every Sabbath[e] he shall arrange it in rows before[f] Yahweh continually; they are from the Israelites[g] as an everlasting[h] covenant. And it shall be for Aaron and for his sons, and they shall eat it in a holy place, because it is a most holy thing[i] for him from Yahweh’s offerings made by fire—a lasting rule.”[j]

John 7:19-24

19 Has not Moses given you the law, and none of you carries out the law? Why do you seek to kill me?”

20 The crowd replied, “You have a demon! Who is seeking to kill you?” 21 Jesus answered and said to them, “I performed one work, and you are all astonished. 22 Because of this Moses has given you circumcision (not that it is from Moses, but from the fathers), and you circumcise a man on the Sabbath. 23 If a man receives circumcision on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses would not be broken, are you angry with me because I made a whole man well[a] on the Sabbath? 24 Do not judge according to outward appearance, but judge according to righteous judgment!”
