Amos 5:18-24

The Lord’s Day of Judging

18 How terrible it will be for you who want
    the Lord’s day of judging to come.
Why do you want that day to come?
    It will bring darkness for you, not light.
19 It will be like someone who runs from a lion
    and meets a bear,
or like someone who goes into his house
    and puts his hand on the wall,
    and then is bitten by a snake.
20 So the Lord’s day of judging will bring darkness, not light;
    it will be very dark, not light at all.

21 The Lord says, “I hate and reject your feasts;
    I cannot stand your religious meetings.
22 If you offer me burnt offerings and grain offerings,
    I won’t accept them.
You bring your best fellowship offerings of fattened cattle,
    but I will ignore them.
23 Take the noise of your songs away from me!
    I won’t listen to the music of your harps.
24 But let justice flow like a river,
    and let goodness flow like a never-ending stream.

Psalm 70

A Cry for God to Help Quickly

For the director of music. A psalm of David. To help people remember.

70 God, come quickly and save me.
    Lord, hurry to help me.
Let those who are trying to kill me
    be ashamed and disgraced.
Let those who want to hurt me
    run away in disgrace.
Let those who make fun of me
    stop because of their shame.
But let all those who worship you
    rejoice and be glad.
Let those who love your salvation
    always say, “Praise the greatness of God.”
I am poor and helpless;
    God, hurry to me.
You help me and save me.
    Lord, do not wait.

1 Thessalonians 4:13-18

The Lord’s Coming

13 Brothers and sisters, we want you to know about those Christians who have died so you will not be sad, as others who have no hope. 14 We believe that Jesus died and that he rose again. So, because of him, God will raise with Jesus those who have died. 15 What we tell you now is the Lord’s own message. We who are living when the Lord comes again will not go before those who have already died. 16 The Lord himself will come down from heaven with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel,[a] and with the trumpet call of God. And those who have died believing in Christ will rise first. 17 After that, we who are still alive will be gathered up with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And we will be with the Lord forever. 18 So encourage each other with these words.

Matthew 25:1-13

A Story About Ten Bridesmaids

25 “At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten bridesmaids who took their lamps and went to wait for the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish and five were wise. The five foolish bridesmaids took their lamps, but they did not take more oil for the lamps to burn. The wise bridesmaids took their lamps and more oil in jars. Because the bridegroom was late, they became sleepy and went to sleep.

“At midnight someone cried out, ‘The bridegroom is coming! Come and meet him!’ Then all the bridesmaids woke up and got their lamps ready. But the foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, because our lamps are going out.’ The wise bridesmaids answered, ‘No, the oil we have might not be enough for all of us. Go to the people who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.’

10 “So while the five foolish bridesmaids went to buy oil, the bridegroom came. The bridesmaids who were ready went in with the bridegroom to the wedding feast. Then the door was closed and locked.

11 “Later the others came back and said, ‘Sir, sir, open the door to let us in.’ 12 But the bridegroom answered, ‘I tell you the truth, I don’t want to know you.’

13 “So always be ready, because you don’t know the day or the hour the Son of Man will come.
