Psalm 123

Psalm 123[a]

Prayer in Time of Spiritual Need

A song of ascents.

I lift up my eyes to you,
to you who are enthroned in heaven.[b]
Behold, as the eyes of servants[c]
are on the hand of their master,
or as the eyes of a maid
focus on the hand of her mistress,
so our eyes are on the Lord, our God,
as we wait for him to show us his mercy.
Show us your mercy, O Lord, show us your mercy,
for we have suffered more than our share of contempt.[d]
We have had to suffer far too long
    the insults of the haughty[e]
and the contempt of the arrogant.

Job 20:1-11

Zophar’s Second Speech[a]

Chapter 20

The Joy of a Sinner Lasts Only for a Moment.

Then Zophar the Naamathite replied:

“The words you have spoken have caused me great distress,
and as a result, I am forced to reply.
I have been outraged by your censure,
but now a spirit beyond my understanding
provides me with the answers to rebuke you.
“Surely you must know that since time began
and man was first placed on the earth,
the triumph of the wicked has always been short-lived,
and the joy of the sinner lasts only for a moment.
Even though in his pride he towers to the sky
and his head touches the clouds,
he is destined to perish forever like his own dung,[b]
and those who used to see him will ask:
    ‘Where is he?’
He will fade away like a dream and never be found again;
he will vanish like a vision of the night.
The eyes that saw him will see him no more,
and his dwelling will not behold him any longer.

He Wolfs Down Riches and Then Vomits Them Up

10 “His children will seek the favor of the poor,
and his hands will be forced to return his wealth.
11 The youthful vigor that once filled his body
will be stagnant with him in the earth.

2 Peter 1:16-21

16 We did not rely upon cleverly concocted myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Rather, we had beheld his majesty with our own eyes. 17 For he received honor and glory from God the Father when a voice came to him from the transcendent Majesty, saying, “This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased.” 18 We ourselves heard this voice that came down from heaven, when we were with him on the sacred mountain.

19 Pay Close Attention to the Message of the Prophets.[a] This confirms the message of the Prophets more fully for us. You would do well to pay close attention to it, as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.

20 First of all, however, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of private interpretation. 21 No prophecy ever came from human initiative. Rather, when people spoke as messengers of God, they did so under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.[b]
