Psalm 30[a]

Thanksgiving for Deliverance from Death

A psalm. A song for the dedication of the temple. Of David.

I will exalt you, O Lord,
    for you have raised me out of the depths[b]
    and have not let my enemies exult over me.
Lord, my God,
    I called to you and you healed me.[c]
Lord, you lifted me up from the netherworld;[d]
    you saved me from sinking into the pit.
Sing praise to the Lord, O you his saints;[e]
    give thanks to his holy name.
For his anger lasts for only a moment,
    while his goodwill endures for a lifetime.
Weeping may last throughout the night,[f]
    but at daybreak there is rejoicing.
In time of good fortune, I said,
    “Nothing can ever sway me.”[g]
Lord, in your goodness
    you established me as an impregnable mountain;
however, when you hid your face,
    I was filled with terror.
[h]To you, O Lord, I cried out,
    and I implored my God for mercy:
10 “What advantage would my death provide
    if I descend into the pit?
Can the dust praise you?
    Can it proclaim your faithfulness?
11 Listen, O Lord, and have mercy on me;
    Lord, be my helper.”
12 You have turned my mourning into dancing;
    you have taken away my sackcloth[i]
    and clothed me with joy.
13 My heart[j] will therefore sing
    in unceasing praise to you;
Lord, my God,
    I will praise you forever.

2 Samuel 14:12-24

12 The woman continued further; “Please permit your servant to speak a further word to my lord the king.” He replied: “Speak.” 13 She said: “In pronouncing this verdict, has not the king condemned himself by devising something like this against the people of God, since you have refused to bring back your banished son? 14 We all must die. We are like water that is spilled on the ground and cannot be gathered up again. However, God does not take away a life. Rather, he devises ways that will enable us to avoid being estranged forever from him.

15 “I have dared to speak in this way to your majesty because the people have intimidated me. I thought: ‘Perhaps if I can speak to the king, he will grant the request of his servant. 16 He will surely listen to me and deliver his servant from the hands of those who seek to cut off both me and my son from God’s inheritance.’ 17 And I further thought: ‘Perhaps the word of my lord the king will restore my peace of mind, for my lord the king is like an angel of God in discerning between good and evil.’ May the Lord, your God, be with you.”

18 Then in reply the king said to the woman: “Do not be evasive in replying to the question I will now ask you.” The woman answered: “Let my lord the king present his question.” 19 Then the king asked: “Is not the hand of Joab behind you in all this?” The woman asserted: “As you live, my lord the king, no one can avoid being completely truthful in responding to what you ask. Yes, it was your servant Joab who instructed me and taught your servant all the things she was to say. 20 Your servant Joab did this to present the situation in a different light. But my lord has the wisdom of an angel of God and is fully aware of everything that happens in the land.”

21 Absalom’s Return. Then the king said to Joab: “Very well. I grant this request. Go forth and bring back the young man Absalom.” 22 Then Joab fell prostrate to the ground in homage and blessed the king, saying: “My lord the king, today your servant knows that I have found favor with you, since the king has granted his servant’s request.”

23 Then Joab set out immediately for Geshur and brought back Absalom to Jerusalem. 24 But the king said: “Let him go to his own house. He shall not come into my presence.” Therefore, Absalom went to his own house and was not received by the king.

Acts 26:1-11

Chapter 26

Paul’s Defense before Agrippa. Agrippa said to Paul, “You have permission to speak for yourself.” Then Paul stretched out his hand and began to defend himself: “I consider myself fortunate, King Agrippa, that it is before you today that I am to defend myself against all the accusations of the Jews, particularly since you are well acquainted with all our Jewish customs and controversies. Therefore, I implore you to listen to me patiently.

“The Jews all know my way of life from my youth, which I first lived among my own people and in Jerusalem. They have known about me from my youth, and they could testify, if they were willing, that I belonged to the strictest sect of our religion and lived as a Pharisee. But now I am on trial because of my hope in the promise made by God to our ancestors.

“Our twelve tribes worship night and day with intense devotion in the hope of seeing its fulfillment. It is because of this hope that I am accused by the Jews, O king. Why should it seem incredible to any of you that God raises the dead?

“I myself once thought that I had to do everything possible against the name of Jesus of Nazareth. 10 And that is what I did in Jerusalem. With the authorization of the chief priests, I not only sent many of the saints[a] to prison, but when they were being condemned to death, I cast my vote against them. 11 In all the synagogues, I tried by inflicting repeated punishments to force them to blaspheme, and I was so enraged with fury against them that I even pursued them to foreign cities.
