³⁸ Jesus Is Buried.^[a] Shortly thereafter, Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly, because of his fear of the Jews, asked Pilate for permission to remove the body of Jesus. Pilate granted him permission, and so he came and took his body away.

³⁹ Nicodemus, who had first come to Jesus at night, also came, bringing with him a mixture of myrrh and aloes weighing about one hundred pounds.^{[b] 40} They took the body of Jesus and wrapped it with the spices in linen cloths, in accordance with the burial custom of the Jews.

⁴¹ At the place where Jesus had been crucified there was a garden, and in that garden there was a new tomb in which no one had ever been buried. ⁴² And so, since it was the Jewish day of Preparation and the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there.
