An Oracle Concerning Tyre

23 The [a]oracle concerning (A)Tyre.

Wail, O (B)ships of (C)Tarshish,
For Tyre is destroyed, without house or [b](D)harbor;
It is revealed to them from the land of [c](E)Cyprus.
(F)Be silent, you inhabitants of the coastland,
You merchants of Sidon;
[d]Your messengers crossed the sea
And were on many waters.
(G)The [e]grain of [f](H)Shihor, the harvest of the Nile was her revenue;
And she was the nations’ (I)gain.
Be ashamed, O (J)Sidon;
For the sea speaks, the strong defense of the sea, saying,
“I have neither travailed nor given birth;
I have neither brought up choice men nor reared virgins.”
When the report reaches Egypt,
They will be in (K)travail at the report of Tyre.
Pass over to (L)Tarshish;
Wail, O inhabitants of the coastland.
Is this your (M)exultant city,
Whose origin is from days of old,
Whose feet used to lead her to sojourn in distant places?

Who has counseled this against Tyre, (N)the bestower of crowns,
Whose merchants were princes, whose traders were the honored of the earth?
(O)Yahweh of hosts has counseled it, to (P)defile the pride of all beauty,
To make contemptuous all the (Q)honored of the earth.
10 [g]Overflow your land like the Nile, O daughter of Tarshish;
There is no more [h]restraint.
11 He has (R)stretched His hand out (S)over the sea;
He has (T)made the kingdoms tremble;
Yahweh has given a command concerning Canaan to (U)demolish its strong defenses.

12 So He said, “(V)You shall exult no more, O crushed virgin daughter of Sidon.
Arise, pass over to [i](W)Cyprus; even there you will find no rest.”

13 Behold, the land of the Chaldeans—this is the people which was not; (X)Assyria established it for (Y)desert creatures—they erected their siege towers, they stripped its palaces, (Z)they made it a ruin.

14 Wail, O (AA)ships of Tarshish,
For your strong defense is destroyed.

15 Now it will be in that day, that Tyre will be forgotten for (AB)seventy years like the days of one king. At the end of seventy years it will happen to Tyre as in the song of the harlot:

16 Take your harp, walk about the city,
O forgotten harlot;
Pluck the strings skillfully, sing many songs,
That you may be remembered.

17 And it will be at (AC)the end of seventy years that Yahweh will visit Tyre. Then she will go back to her harlot’s wages and will (AD)play the harlot with all the kingdoms [j]on the face of the earth. 18 And her (AE)gain and her harlot’s wages will be (AF)set apart to Yahweh; it will not be treasured up or hoarded, but her gain will become sufficient food and choice attire for those who inhabit the presence of Yahweh.

Yahweh Will Empty the Earth

24 Behold, Yahweh (AG)empties the earth to destruction, eviscerates it, distorts its surface, and scatters its inhabitants. And the people will be like the priest, the male slave like his master, the female slave like her mistress, the buyer like the seller, the lender like the borrower, the (AH)creditor like the debtor. The earth will be completely emptied to destruction and completely plundered, for Yahweh has spoken this word. The (AI)earth mourns and withers; the world languishes and withers; the (AJ)exalted of the people of the earth languish. The earth is also (AK)polluted [k]by its inhabitants, for they trespassed laws, violated statutes, (AL)broke the everlasting covenant. Therefore, a (AM)curse devours the earth, and those who inhabit it are held guilty. Therefore, the (AN)inhabitants of the earth are burned, and few men remain.

The (AO)new wine mourns;
The vine languishes;
All the glad of heart sigh.
The (AP)joy of tambourines ceases;
The rumbling of those exulting stops;
The joy of the harp ceases.
They do not drink wine with song;
(AQ)Strong drink is (AR)bitter to those who drink it.
10 The (AS)city of chaos is broken down;
(AT)Every house is shut up so that none may enter.
11 There is an (AU)outcry in the streets concerning the wine;
(AV)All gladness [l]turns to gloom.
The joy of the earth is taken away into exile.
12 Desolation remains in the city,
And the (AW)gate is struck down to ruins.
13 For (AX)thus it will be in the midst of the earth among the peoples,
As the [m]shaking of an olive tree,
As the gleanings when the grape harvest is over.
14 (AY)They lift up their voices, they shout for joy;
They cry out from the [n]west concerning the majesty of Yahweh.
15 Therefore (AZ)glorify Yahweh in the [o]east,
The (BA)name of Yahweh, the God of Israel,
In the [p](BB)coastlands of the sea.
16 From the (BC)ends of the earth we hear songs, “(BD)Glory to the Righteous One,”
But I say, “[q](BE)I waste away! [r]I waste away! Woe is me!
The (BF)treacherous deal treacherously,
And the treacherous deal very treacherously.”
17 (BG)Panic and pit and pitfall
Are upon you, O inhabitant of the earth.
18 Then it will be that he who flees the sound of panic will fall into the pit,
And he who [s]climbs out of the pit will be caught in the pitfall;
For the (BH)windows [t]above are opened, and the (BI)foundations of the earth quake.
19 (BJ)The earth is broken asunder;
The earth is (BK)split through;
The earth is shaken violently.
20 The earth (BL)reels to and fro like a drunkard
And it totters like a [u]shack,
For its (BM)transgression is heavy upon it,
And it will fall, (BN)never to rise again.
21 So it will be in that day,
That Yahweh will (BO)punish the host of heights on high,
And the (BP)kings of the earth on earth.
22 They will be gathered together
Like (BQ)prisoners in the [v]pit,
And will be confined in prison;
And after many days they will (BR)be punished.
23 Then the (BS)moon will be humiliated and the sun ashamed,
For (BT)Yahweh of hosts will reign on (BU)Mount Zion and in Jerusalem,
And His glory will be before His elders.

Yahweh Will Swallow Up Death

25 O Yahweh, You are (BV)my God;
I will exalt You, I will give thanks to Your name;
For You have (BW)worked wonders,
(BX)Counsels formed long ago, with perfect faithfulness.
For You have made a city into a (BY)heap,
A (BZ)fortified town into a ruin;
A (CA)palace of strangers is a city no more,
It will never be rebuilt.
Therefore a strong people will (CB)glorify You;
(CC)Towns of ruthless nations will fear You.
For You have been a (CD)strong defense for the poor,
A strong defense for the needy in his distress,
A (CE)refuge from the storm, a shade from the heat;
For the breath of the (CF)ruthless
Is like a rain storm against a wall.
Like heat in a dry land, You subdue the (CG)rumbling of strangers;
Like heat by the shadow of a cloud, the song of the ruthless is [w]silenced.

(CH)And Yahweh of hosts will prepare a [x]lavish banquet for (CI)all peoples on this mountain;
A banquet of [y]aged wine, [z]choice pieces with marrow,
And [aa]refined, aged wine.
And on this mountain He will swallow up the [ab](CJ)covering which is over all peoples,
Even the veil which is [ac]stretched over all nations.
He will (CK)swallow up death for all time,
And Lord Yahweh will (CL)wipe tears away from all faces,
And He will remove the (CM)reproach of His people from all the earth;
For Yahweh has spoken.
And it will be said in that day,
“Behold, (CN)this is our God in whom we have (CO)hoped that (CP)He would save us.
This is Yahweh in whom we have hoped;
(CQ)Let us rejoice and be glad in His salvation.”
10 For the hand of Yahweh will rest on this mountain,
And (CR)Moab will be trodden down in his place
As straw is trodden down in the water of a manure pile.
11 And he will (CS)spread out his hands in the middle of it
As a swimmer spreads out his hands to swim,
But Yahweh will (CT)lay low his lofty pride together with the trickery of his hands.
12 The (CU)unassailable fortifications of your walls He will bring down,
Lay low, and cast to the ground, even to the dust.

Philippians 1

Thanksgiving

(A)Paul and (B)Timothy, (C)slaves of (D)Christ Jesus,

To (E)all the [a](F)saints in Christ Jesus who are in (G)Philippi, with the (H)overseers and (I)deacons: (J)Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

(K)I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, always offering prayer with joy in (L)my every prayer for you all, because of your [b](M)fellowship in the (N)gospel (O)from the first day until now. For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until (P)the day of Christ Jesus. [c]For (Q)it is only right for me to think this way about you all, because I (R)have you in my heart, since both in my (S)chains and in the (T)defense and confirmation of the (U)gospel, you all are fellow partakers with me in this grace. For (V)God is my witness, how I long for you all with the [d]affection of (W)Christ Jesus. And this I pray, that (X)your love may abound still more and more in (Y)full knowledge and all discernment, 10 so that you may [e](Z)approve the things that are excellent, in order to be sincere and without fault [f]until (AA)the day of Christ, 11 having been filled with the (AB)fruit of righteousness which comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.

The Progress of the Gospel

12 Now I want you to know, brothers, that my circumstances (AC)have turned out for the greater progress of the (AD)gospel, 13 so that my (AE)chains in Christ have become well known throughout the whole [g]praetorian guard and to (AF)everyone else, 14 and that most of the [h]brothers, having become confident in the Lord because of my (AG)chains, have (AH)far more courage to speak the word of God without fear. 15 (AI)Some, to be sure, are preaching Christ even [i]from envy and strife, but some also [j]from good will; 16 the latter do it out of love, knowing that I am appointed for the defense of the (AJ)gospel; 17 the former proclaim Christ (AK)out of selfish ambition [k]rather than from pure motives, thinking to cause me affliction in my (AL)chains. 18 What then? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is proclaimed, and in this I rejoice.

Yes, and I will rejoice, 19 for I know that (AM)this will turn out for my salvation (AN)through your [l]prayers and the provision of (AO)the Spirit of Jesus Christ, 20 according to my (AP)earnest expectation and (AQ)hope, that I will not be put to shame in anything, but that with (AR)all boldness, Christ will even now, as always, be (AS)magnified in my body, (AT)whether by life or by death.

To Live Is Christ

21 For to me, (AU)to live is Christ and to die is gain. 22 [m]But if I am to live on in the flesh, this will mean (AV)fruitful labor for me; and I do not know what I will choose. 23 But I am hard-pressed [n]between the two, having the (AW)desire to depart and (AX)be with Christ, for that is very much better, 24 yet to remain on in the flesh is more necessary for your sake. 25 (AY)And convinced of this, I know that I will remain and continue with you all for your progress and joy [o]in the faith, 26 so that your reason for (AZ)boasting may abound in Christ Jesus in me, through my coming to you again.

27 Only [p]live your lives in a manner (BA)worthy of the (BB)gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or remain absent, I will hear about your circumstances, that you are (BC)standing firm in (BD)one spirit, with one [q]mind (BE)contending together for the faith of the gospel, 28 in no way alarmed by your opponents—which is a (BF)sign of destruction for them, but of salvation for you, and that too, from God. 29 For to you (BG)it has been granted for Christ’s sake, not only to believe in Him, but also to (BH)suffer for His sake, 30 having the same (BI)struggle which (BJ)you saw in me, and now hear to be in me.
