BOOK 5

Yahweh Saves in Times of Trouble

107 Oh (A)give thanks to Yahweh, for (B)He is good,
For His lovingkindness endures forever.
Let (C)the redeemed of Yahweh say so,
Whom He has (D)redeemed from the hand of the adversary
And (E)gathered from the lands,
From the east and from the west,
From the north and from the [a]south.

They (F)wandered in the wilderness along the way of the wasteland;
They did not find an inhabited (G)city.
Hungry [b]and thirsty,
Their (H)soul fainted within them.
Then they (I)cried out to Yahweh in their trouble;
He delivered them out of their distresses.
He led them by a [c](J)straight way,
To go to (K)an inhabited city.
(L)Let them give thanks to Yahweh for His lovingkindness,
And for His wondrous deeds to the sons of men!
For He has (M)satisfied the [d]thirsty soul,
And the (N)hungry soul He has filled with what is good.

10 There were those who (O)inhabited darkness and the shadow of death,
(P)Prisoners in affliction and irons,
11 Because they had (Q)rebelled against the words of God
And (R)spurned the (S)counsel of the Most High.
12 So He subdued their heart with labor;
They stumbled and there was (T)none to help.
13 Then they (U)cried out to Yahweh in their trouble;
He saved them out of their distresses.
14 He (V)brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death
And (W)broke their bands apart.
15 (X)Let them give thanks to Yahweh for His lovingkindness,
And for His wondrous deeds to the sons of men!
16 For He has (Y)shattered the doors of bronze
And cut through the bars of iron.

17 [e]Ignorant fools, because of their way of transgression,
And (Z)because of their iniquities, were afflicted.
18 Their (AA)soul abhorred all kinds of food,
And they (AB)reached the (AC)gates of death.
19 Then they cried out to Yahweh in their trouble;
He saved them out of their distresses.
20 He (AD)sent His word and (AE)healed them,
And (AF)provided them escape from their [f]destructions.
21 (AG)Let them give thanks to Yahweh for His lovingkindness,
And for His wondrous deeds to the sons of men!
22 Let them also offer (AH)sacrifices of thanksgiving,
And (AI)recount His works with joyful singing.

23 Those who (AJ)go down to the sea in ships,
Who do business on many waters;
24 They have seen the works of Yahweh,
And His wondrous deeds in the deep.
25 He (AK)spoke and set up a (AL)stormy wind,
Which (AM)raised up the waves [g]of the sea.
26 They went up to the heavens, they went down to the depths;
Their soul (AN)melted away in the [h]calamity.
27 They staggered and (AO)swayed like a drunken man,
And all their wisdom was swallowed up.
28 Then they cried to Yahweh in their trouble,
And He brought them out of their distresses.
29 He (AP)caused the storm to stand still,
So that its waves were hushed.
30 Then they were glad because they were quiet,
So He led them to their desired haven.
31 (AQ)Let them give thanks to Yahweh for His lovingkindness,
And for His (AR)wondrous deeds to the sons of men!
32 Let them (AS)exalt Him also (AT)in the assembly of the people,
And (AU)praise Him at the seat of the elders.

33 He [i](AV)makes rivers into a [j]wilderness
And springs of water into a thirsty ground;
34 A (AW)fruitful land into a (AX)salt waste,
Because of the evil of those who inhabited it.
35 He (AY)makes a wilderness into a pool of water
And a dry land into springs of water;
36 And there He causes the hungry to inhabit,
So that they may establish (AZ)an inhabited city,
37 And sow fields and (BA)plant vineyards,
And produce a fruitful harvest.
38 Also He blesses them and they (BB)multiply greatly,
And He (BC)does not let their cattle decrease.

39 But when they (BD)decrease and are (BE)bowed down
Through oppression, evil, and sorrow,
40 He (BF)pours contempt upon nobles
And (BG)makes them wander (BH)in a pathless void.
41 But He (BI)sets the needy [k]securely on high away from affliction,
And (BJ)makes his families like a flock.
42 The (BK)upright see it and are glad;
But all (BL)unrighteousness shuts its mouth.
43 Who is (BM)wise? Let him keep these things,
And carefully consider the (BN)lovingkindnesses of Yahweh.

He Will Tread Down Our Adversaries

A Song. A Psalm of David.

108 (BO)My heart is set, O God;
I will sing, I will sing praises, even with my glory.
Awake, harp and lyre;
I will awaken the dawn!
I will give thanks to You, O Yahweh, among the peoples,
And I will sing praises to You among the nations.
For Your (BP)lovingkindness is great (BQ)above the heavens,
And Your truth reaches to the skies.
(BR)Be exalted above the heavens, O God,
And Your glory above all the earth.
(BS)That Your beloved may be rescued,
Save with Your right hand, and answer me!

God has spoken in His [l]holiness:
“I will exult, I will portion out Shechem
And measure out the valley of Succoth.
Gilead is Mine, Manasseh is Mine;
Ephraim also is the [m]helmet of My head;
(BT)Judah is My [n]scepter.
Moab is My washbowl;
Over Edom I shall throw My shoe;
Over Philistia I will make a loud shout.”

10 (BU)Who will bring me into the well-defended city?
Who [o]will lead me to Edom?
11 Have You, O God, not (BV)rejected us?
And will You, O God, not go forth with our armies?
12 Oh give us help against the adversary,
For (BW)salvation [p]by man is worthless.
13 [q]Through God we shall do valiantly,
And (BX)it is He who will tread down our adversaries.

O God, Do Not Be Silent

For the choir director. Of David. A Psalm.

109 O (BY)God of my praise,
(BZ)Do not be silent!
For they have opened a wicked mouth and a (CA)deceitful mouth against me;
They have spoken to me with a (CB)lying tongue.
They have also surrounded me with words of hatred,
And fought against me (CC)without cause.
In return (CD)for my love they accuse me;
But (CE)I am in prayer.
Thus they have (CF)set upon me evil for good
And (CG)hatred for my love.

Appoint a wicked man over him,
And let an [r](CH)accuser stand at his right hand.
When he is judged, let him (CI)come forth a wicked man,
And let his (CJ)prayer become sin.
Let (CK)his days be few;
Let (CL)another take his office.
Let his (CM)sons be orphans
And his (CN)wife a widow.
10 Let his (CO)sons wander aimlessly and beg;
And let them (CP)search for food [s]from their ruined homes.
11 Let (CQ)the creditor [t]seize all that he has,
And let (CR)strangers plunder the fruit of his labor.
12 Let there be none to [u](CS)extend lovingkindness to him,
And (CT)let there be none to be gracious to his orphans.
13 Let those who (CU)follow him be [v]cut off;
In a following generation let their (CV)name be blotted out.

14 Let (CW)the iniquity of his fathers be remembered [w]before Yahweh,
And let not the sin of his mother be (CX)blotted out.
15 Let (CY)them be before Yahweh continually,
That He may (CZ)cut off their memory from the earth;
16 Because he did not remember to show lovingkindness,
But persecuted the (DA)afflicted, the needy man,
And the (DB)disheartened to (DC)put them to death.
17 He also loved cursing, so (DD)it came to him;
And he did not delight in blessing, so it was far from him.
18 But he (DE)clothed himself with cursing as his garment,
And it (DF)came into his inward parts like water
And like oil into his bones.
19 Let it be to him as (DG)a garment with which he wraps himself,
And for a belt with which he constantly (DH)girds himself.
20 This is the (DI)reward of my accusers from Yahweh,
And of those who (DJ)speak evil against my soul.

21 But as for You, O Yahweh, O Lord, deal with me (DK)for Your name’s sake;
Because (DL)Your lovingkindness is good, deliver me;
22 For (DM)I am afflicted and needy,
And [x]my heart is (DN)pierced within me.
23 I am passing (DO)like a shadow when it is stretched out;
I am shaken off (DP)like the locust.
24 My (DQ)knees are feeble from (DR)fasting,
And my flesh has grown lean, without fatness.
25 As for me, I have become a (DS)reproach to them;
They see me, they (DT)wag their head.

26 (DU)Help me, O Yahweh my God;
Save me according to Your lovingkindness.
27 [y]And let them (DV)know that this is Your hand;
You, O Yahweh, have done it.
28 (DW)Let them curse, but You bless;
They arise and will be put to shame,
But Your (DX)slave shall be glad.
29 [z]Let (DY)my accusers be clothed with dishonor,
And [aa]let them (DZ)wrap themselves with their own shame as with a robe.

30 With my mouth I will give thanks abundantly to Yahweh;
And in the midst of many (EA)I will praise Him.
31 For He stands (EB)at the right hand of the needy,
To save him from those who (EC)judge his soul.

1 Corinthians 4

Servants of Christ

Let a man consider us in this manner, as (A)servants of Christ and (B)stewards of (C)the mysteries of God. In this case, moreover, it is required [a]of stewards that one be found faithful. But to me it is a very small thing that I may be examined by you, or by any human [b]court. In fact, I do not even examine myself. For I (D)am conscious of nothing against myself, yet I am not by this (E)acquitted. But the one who examines me is the Lord. Therefore (F)do not go on [c]passing judgment before [d]the time, but wait (G)until the Lord comes who will both (H)bring to light the things hidden in the darkness and make manifest the motives of hearts. And then each one’s (I)praise will come to him from God.

Now these things, brothers, I have applied to myself and Apollos for your sakes, so that in us you may learn not to go beyond (J)what is written, so that no one of you will (K)become puffed up (L)on behalf of one against the other. For who regards you as superior? (M)What do you have that you did not receive? And if you did receive it, why do you boast as if you had not received it?

You are (N)already filled, you have already become rich, you have ruled without us—and how I wish that you had ruled indeed so that we also might rule with you. For, I think that God has exhibited us apostles last of all, as men (O)condemned to death, because we (P)have become a spectacle to the world, and to angels, and to men. 10 We are (Q)fools for the sake of Christ, but (R)you are prudent in Christ! (S)We are weak, but you are strong! You are glorious, but we are without honor! 11 To this present hour we (T)hunger and thirst, and are poorly clothed, and roughly treated, and homeless; 12 and we labor, (U)working with our own hands; when we are (V)reviled, we bless; when we are (W)persecuted, we endure; 13 when we are slandered, we try to plead; we have (X)become as the scum of the world, the grime of all things, even until now.

14 I do not write these things to (Y)shame you, but to admonish you as my beloved (Z)children. 15 For if you were to have countless (AA)tutors in Christ, yet you would not have many fathers, for in (AB)Christ Jesus I (AC)became your father through the (AD)gospel. 16 Therefore I exhort you, be (AE)imitators of me. 17 For this reason I (AF)have sent to you (AG)Timothy, who is my (AH)beloved and faithful child in the Lord, and who will remind you of my ways which are in Christ, (AI)just as I teach everywhere in every church. 18 Now some have become (AJ)puffed up, as though I were not (AK)coming to you. 19 But I (AL)will come to you soon, (AM)if the Lord wills, and I shall know, not the [e]words of those who are (AN)puffed up but their power. 20 For the kingdom of God does (AO)not consist in [f]words but in power. 21 What do you desire? (AP)Shall I come to you with a rod, or with love and a spirit of gentleness?
