Old/New Testament
13 “If a prophet stands up in your midst or a dreamer of dreams[a] and he gives to you a sign or wonder, 2 and the sign or[b] the wonder comes about that he spoke[c] to you, saying,[d] ‘Let us go after other gods (those whom you have not known), and let us serve them,’ 3 you must not listen to the words of that prophet or to that dreamer, for Yahweh your God is testing you to know whether you love[e] Yahweh your God with all of your heart and with all of your inner self.[f] 4 You shall go after Yahweh your God, and him you shall revere, and his commandment you shall keep, and to his voice you shall listen, and him you shall serve, and to him you shall hold fast. 5 But that prophet or the dreamer of that dream shall be executed, for he spoke falsely about Yahweh your God, the one bringing you out from the land of Egypt and the one redeeming you from the house of slavery, in order to seduce you from the way that Yahweh your God commanded you to go in it; so in this way you shall purge the evil from your midst.
6 “If your brother, the son of your mother or your son or your daughter or your wife whom you embrace[g] or your intimate friend[h] in secrecy says,[i] ‘Let us go and let us serve other gods!’ gods that you and your ancestors[j] have not known, 7 from among the gods of the people who are around you, those near you or those far from you,[k] from one end of the earth and up to the other end of the earth, 8 you must not give in to him, and you shall not listen to him, and your eye shall not take pity on him, and you shall not have compassion, and you shall not cover up[l] for him. 9 But you shall certainly kill him; your hand shall be first against him to kill him and next the hand of all of the people. 10 And you shall stone him with stones and let him die, for he tried to seduce you from Yahweh your God, the one bringing you from the land of Egypt, from the house of slavery. 11 And all of Israel shall hear, and they shall fear, and they shall not continue to act[m] according to this evil thing in your midst.
12 “If you hear in one of your towns which Yahweh your God is giving to you to live in, someone saying that[n] 13 worthless men[o] have gone out from your midst and have seduced the inhabitants of their town, saying,[p] ‘Let us go and serve other gods!’ whom you have not known, 14 then you shall inquire and examine and interrogate thoroughly, and, look! It is true; the thing has actually been done, this detestable thing in your midst, 15 then you shall certainly strike down the inhabitants of that town with the edge[q] of the sword; you shall destroy it and everything in it, its domestic animals with the edge[r] of the sword. 16 And then you shall gather all of its booty into the middle of its public square, and you shall burn the town and all of its war-booty totally for Yahweh your God, and it shall be a pile of rubble forever;[s] it shall not be built again. 17 And let not something cling to your hand from the things devoted to destruction, so that Yahweh may turn back from his burning anger,[t] and he may show compassion to you and he may continue to show compassion and so multiply you just as he swore[u] to your ancestors,[v] 18 if you listen to the voice of Yahweh your God, to keep all of his commandments that I am commanding to you today[w] so as to do the right thing in the eyes of Yahweh your God.”
14 “You are children[x] of Yahweh your God; therefore you must not gash[y] yourself, and you must not make your forehead bald[z] for the dead. 2 For you are a people holy to Yahweh your God, and you Yahweh has chosen to be a treasured possession from among all of the peoples that are on the surface[aa] of the earth.
3 You shall not eat any detestable thing. 4 These are the animals you may eat: ox, sheep, goats,[ab] 5 deer, gazelle, roebuck, wild goat, ibex, antelope, and mountain sheep. 6 And any animal having a split hoof[ac] and so a dividing of the hoof into two parts[ad] and that chews the cud[ae] among the animals[af]—that animal you may eat. 7 Only these you may not eat from those chewing the cud[ag] and from those having a division of the hoof:[ah] the camel and the hare and the coney, because they chew the cud,[ai] but they do not divide the hoof; they are therefore unclean for you. 8 And also the pig because it has a division of the hoof[aj] but does not chew the cud;[ak] it is unclean for you; from their meat you shall not eat, and you shall not touch their carcasses.[al]
9 “This is what you shall eat from all that is in the water: everything[am] that has fins and scales[an] you may eat. 10 But anything that does not have[ao] fins and scales, you may not eat, for it is unclean for you.
11 “All of the birds that are clean you may eat. 12 Now these are the ones you shall not eat any of them:[ap] the eagle and the vulture and the short-toed eagle,[aq] 13 and the red kite[ar] and the black kite or any kind of falcon,[as] 14 and any kind of crow[at] according to its kind, 15 and the ostrich[au] and the short-eared owl and the seagull[av] and the hawk according to its kind, 16 the little owl and the great owl and the barn owl,[aw] 17 and the desert owl[ax] and the carrion vulture[ay] and the cormorant,[az] 18 and the stork and the heron according to its kind and the hoopoe and the bat. 19 And also all of the winged insects;[ba] they are unclean for you; you shall not eat them. 20 You may eat any clean bird.
21 “You shall not eat any carcass;[bb] you may give it to the alien who is in your towns,[bc] and he may eat it, or you may sell it to a foreigner, for you are a holy people for Yahweh your God; you may not boil a kid in its mother’s milk.
22 “Certainly you must give a tithe of all the yield of your seed, which comes forth from your field year after year.[bd] 23 And you shall eat before[be] Yahweh your God in the place that he will choose to make to dwell his name there the tithe of your grain, your wine and your olive oil and the firstling of your herd and your flock, so that you may learn to revere Yahweh your God always.[bf] 24 But if the distance is too great for you,[bg] so that you are not able to transport[bh] it, because the place that Yahweh your God will choose to set his name there, it is too far from you, when Yahweh your God will bless you, 25 then in that case you may exchange for money,[bi] and you shall take[bj] the money to your hand and go to the place that Yahweh your God will choose. 26 You may spend the money for anything that you desire,[bk] for oxen or for sheep or for wine or for strong drink or for anything that you desire,[bl] and you shall eat it there before[bm] Yahweh your God, and you shall rejoice, you and your household. 27 And as to the Levite who is in your towns,[bn] you shall not neglect him, because there is not a plot of ground for him and an inheritance along with you.
28 “At the end of three years you shall bring out all of the tithe of your yield for that year, and you shall store it in your towns.[bo] 29 And so the Levite may come, because there is no plot of ground for him or an inheritance with you, and the alien also may come and the orphan and the widow that are in your towns,[bp] and they may eat their fill,[bq] so that Yahweh your God may bless you in all of the work of your hand that you undertake.”
15 “At the end of seven years you shall grant a remission of debt. 2 And this is the manner of the remission of debt: every creditor[br] shall remit his claim that he holds against his neighbor, and he shall not exact payment from his brother because there[bs] a remission of debt has been proclaimed unto[bt] Yahweh. 3 With respect to the foreigner you may exact payment, but you must remit[bu] what shall be owed to you with respect to your brother. 4 Nevertheless, there[bv] shall not be among you a poor person, because Yahweh will certainly bless you in the land that Yahweh your God is giving to you as an inheritance, to take possession of it. 5 If only you listen well to the voice of Yahweh your God by observing diligently[bw] all of these commandments[bx] that I am commanding you today.[by] 6 When Yahweh your God has blessed you, just as he promised[bz] to you, then you will lend to many nations, but you will not borrow from them, and you will rule over many nations, but they will not rule over you. 7 If there is a poor person among you from among one of your brothers in one of your towns[ca] that Yahweh your God is giving to you, you shall not harden your heart, and you shall not shut your hand toward your brother who is poor.[cb] 8 But you shall certainly open your hand for him, and you shall willingly lend[cc] to him enough to meet his need, whatever it is.[cd] 9 Take care[ce] so that there[cf] will not be a thought of wickedness[cg] in your heart, saying,[ch] ‘The seventh year, the year of the remission of debt is near,’ and you view your needy neighbor with hostility,[ci] and so you do not give to him, and he might cry out against you to Yahweh, and you would incur guilt against yourself.[cj] 10 By all means you must give to him, and you must not be discontented[ck] at your giving to him, because on account of this very thing, Yahweh your God will bless you in all your work and in all that you undertake.[cl] 11 For the poor[cm] will not cease to be among you[cn] in the land; therefore I am commanding you, saying,[co] ‘You shall willingly open your hand to your brother, to your needy and to your poor that are in your land.’
12 If your relative[cp] who is a Hebrew man or a Hebrew woman is sold to you, and he or she has served you six years, then in the seventh year you shall send that person out free.[cq] 13 And when you send him out free from you, you shall not send him away empty-handed. 14 You shall generously supply him from among your flocks and from your threshing floor and from your press; according to that with which Yahweh your God has blessed you, you shall give to him. 15 And remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and Yahweh your God redeemed you; therefore I am commanding you thus today.[cr] 16 And then if it will happen that he says to you, ‘I do not want to go out[cs] from you,’ because he loves you and your family, because it is good for him to be with you; 17 then you shall take an awl, and you shall thrust it through his earlobe and into the door, and he shall be to you a slave forever;[ct] and you shall also do likewise for your slave woman. 18 It shall not be hard in your eyes when you send him forth free,[cu] because for six years he has served you worth twice the wage of a hired worker; and Yahweh your God will bless you in whatever you will do.[cv]
19 “Every firstling male that is born of your herd and of your flock you shall consecrate to Yahweh your God; you shall not do work with the firstling of your ox, and you shall not shear the firstling of your flock. 20 Rather before Yahweh[cw] your God you shall eat it year by year at the place Yahweh will choose, you and your household. 21 But if there is a physical defect in it, such as lameness or blindness, any serious defect, you shall not sacrifice it to Yahweh your God. 22 In your towns[cx] you shall eat it, the unclean and the clean together may eat it, just as they eat the gazelle and as they eat the deer. 23 But you shall not eat its blood; you shall pour it on the ground like water.”
The Greatest Commandment
28 And one of the scribes came up and[a] heard them debating. When he[b] saw that he answered them well, he asked him, “Which commandment is the most important of all?” 29 Jesus answered, “The most important is, ‘Listen, Israel! The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 30 And you shall love the Lord your God from your whole heart and from your whole soul and from your whole mind and from your whole strength.’[c] 31 The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’[d] There is no other commandment greater than these.” 32 And the scribe said to him, “That is true, Teacher. You have said correctly[e] that he is one and there is no other except him. 33 And to love him from your[f] whole heart and from your[g] whole understanding and from your[h] whole strength, and to love your[i] neighbor as yourself, is much more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.” 34 And Jesus, when he[j] saw that he had answered thoughtfully, said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” And no one dared to put a question to him any longer.
David’s Son and Lord
35 And continuing, Jesus said while[k] teaching in the temple courts,[l] “How can the scribes say that the Christ is David’s son? 36 David himself said by the Holy Spirit,
‘The Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit at my right hand,
until I put your enemies
under your feet.”’[m]
37 David himself calls him ‘Lord,’ and how is he his son?” And the large crowd was listening to him gladly.
Warning to Beware of the Scribes
38 And in his teaching he said, “Beware of the scribes, who like walking around in long robes and greetings in the marketplaces 39 and the best seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets, 40 who devour the houses of widows and pray lengthy prayers for the sake of appearance. These will receive more severe condemnation!”
A Poor Widow’s Offering
41 And he sat down opposite the contribution box and[n] was observing how the crowd was putting coins into the contribution box. And many rich people were putting in many coins.[o] 42 And one poor widow came and[p] put in two small copper coins[q] (that is, a penny).[r] 43 And summoning his disciples, he said to them, “Truly I say to you that this poor widow put in more than all those who put offerings[s] into the contribution box. 44 For they all contributed[t] out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in everything she had, her whole means of subsistence.”
