Old/New Testament
Gad and Reuben Inherit Gilead
32 The descendants[a] of Reuben and the descendants[b] of Gad had a very large number of livestock. And they saw the land of Jazer and the land of Gilead, and behold it was a place for livestock. 2 The descendants[c] of Gad and the descendants[d] of Reuben came, and they said to Moses and to Eleazar the priest and to the leaders of the community, saying, 3 “Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sebam, Nebo, and Beon, 4 the land that Yahweh struck before the community of Israel, is a land of livestock, and your servants have livestock.” 5 They said, “If we have found favor in your sight,[e] let this land be given to your servants as property; do not lead us across the Jordan.”
6 But Moses said to the descendants[f] of Gad and to the descendants[g] of Reuben, “Will your brothers go to war while you yourselves live here? 7 Why are you discouraging the hearts of the Israelites[h] from crossing into the land that Yahweh gave to them? 8 This is what your fathers did when I sent them from Kadesh Barnea to see the land. 9 When they went up to the valley[i] of Eshcol and saw the land, they discouraged the heart of the Israelites[j] so that they did not come to the land that Yahweh gave to them. 10 So Yahweh’s anger burned[k] on that day, and he swore an oath, saying, 11 ‘The men who went up from Egypt, from those twenty years old[l] and above, will not see the land that I swore with an oath to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob because they have not wholly followed me, 12 except Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite and Joshua son of Nun, because they followed Yahweh wholly.’ 13 And Yahweh became angry,[m] and he made them wander in the desert forty years until the entire generation who did evil in the sight of Yahweh[n] had died.[o] 14 Behold, you stand in the place of your fathers, a brood of sinful men, to increase still more Yahweh’s fierce anger[p] against Israel. 15 If you turn from following him, he will again abandon them[q] in the wilderness, and you would have destroyed all these people.”
16 They came near to him and said, “We will build sheep pens here for the flock of our livestock and cities for our little children; 17 but we ourselves will become armed and ready before the Israelites[r] until we have brought them to their place, and our little children will live in the fortified cities because of the inhabitants of the land. 18 We will not return to our houses until the Israelites[s] each obtain their[t] inheritance for themselves. 19 For we will not take possession with them from across the Jordan and beyond because our inheritance has come to us from across the Jordan to the east.”
20 So Moses said to them, “If you do this thing, if you arm yourselves before[u] Yahweh for the war, 21 and everyone of you armed cross the Jordan before[v] Yahweh until he has driven out his enemies from before him, 22 and the land is subdued before[w] Yahweh, then afterward you will return and be free of obligation from Yahweh and from Israel, and this land will be your property before[x] Yahweh. 23 But if you do not do so, behold, you have sinned against Yahweh, and know that your sin will find you. 24 Build for yourselves cities for your little children and sheep pens for your flocks; what has gone out from your mouth you will do.”
25 So the descendants[y] of Gad and the descendants[z] of Reuben said to Moses, saying, “Your servants will do just as my lord commands. 26 Our little children, our wives, our livestock, and all of our animals[aa] will remain[ab] in the cities of Gilead, 27 but your servants, everyone who is armed for battle, will cross over before[ac] Yahweh to the war, just as my lord says.”
28 So Moses commanded them, Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the heads of the families[ad] of the tribes of the Israelites.[ae] 29 Moses said to them, “If the descendants[af] of Gad and the descendants[ag] of Reuben, everyone who is armed for the war, cross over the Jordan before[ah] Yahweh, and the land is subdued before you, you will give them the land of Gilead as property. 30 But if they will not cross over with you armed, they will acquire land in your midst in Canaan.” 31 The descendants[ai] of Gad and the descendants of Reuben answered and said, “What Yahweh has commanded your servants, we will do. 32 We ourselves will cross over armed before[aj] Yahweh to the land of Canaan, and the property of our inheritance will remain with us beyond the Jordan.”
33 So Moses gave to them, to the descendants[ak] of Gad and the descendants[al] of Reuben, and to half of the tribe of Joseph’s son Manasseh, the kingdom of Sihon the king of Amorites and the kingdom of Og the king of the Bashan, the land with its cities and their territories, the cities of the surrounding land. 34 The descendants[am] of Gad rebuilt Dibon, Ataroth, and Aroer, 35 and Atroth Shophan, Jazer, and Jogbehah, 36 and Beth Nimrah and Beth Haran, the cities of Mibzar, and the sheep pens for flocks. 37 The descendants[an] of Reuben rebuilt Heshbon, Elealeh, and Kiriathaim, 38 and Nebo, Baal Meon (their names[ao] were changed), and Sibmah, and they renamed[ap] the cities that they rebuilt. 39 The descendants[aq] of Makir son of Manasseh went to Gilead, and they captured it and drove out the Amorites[ar] who were in it. 40 So Moses gave Gilead to Makir son of Manasseh, and he lived in it. 41 And Jair son of Manasseh went and captured their unwalled villages, and he called them Havvoth Jair. 42 Nobah went and captured Kenath and its villages, and he called it Nobah after his own name.
The Travels Are Recounted
33 These were the journeys of the Israelites,[as] who went out from the land of Egypt according to their divisions, by the hand of Moses and Aaron. 2 Moses wrote down their movements according to their journeys on the command of Yahweh, and these are their journeys according to their movements. 3 They set out from Rameses on the first month, on the fifteenth day of the first month; on the next day after the Passover the Israelites[at] went out boldly[au] in the sight[av] of all the Egyptians 4 while the Egyptians were burying all the firstborn among them whom Yahweh struck. Yahweh also executed punishments among their gods.
5 Then the Israelites[aw] set out from Rameses, and they camped in Succoth. 6 They journeyed from Succoth and camped in Etham, which is on the edge of the desert. 7 Then they set out from Etham and returned to Pi-Hahiroth, which faces Baal Zephon, and they camped before Migdol. 8 They set out from Pi-Hahiroth and went through the midst of the sea into the desert; and they went a journey of three days into the desert of Etham and camped at Marah. 9 They set out from Marah and came to Elim, and in Elim there were twelve springs of water and seventy palm trees, and they camped there. 10 They set out from Elim, and they camped at the Red Sea.[ax] 11 They set out from the Red Sea[ay] and camped at the desert of Sin. 12 They set out from the desert of Sin and camped at Dophkah. 13 They set out from Dophkah and camped at Alush. 14 They set out from Alush and encamped at Rephidim; and it was there that the people had no water to drink. 15 They set out from Rephidim and camped in the desert of Sinai. 16 The set out from the desert of Sinai and camped at Kibroth Hattaavah.
17 They set out from Kibroth Hattaavah and camped at Hazeroth. 18 They set out from Hazeroth and camped at Rithmah. 19 They set out from Rithmah and camped at Rimmon Perez. 20 They set out from Rimmon Perez and camped at Libnah. 21 They set out from Libnah and camped at Rissah. 22 They set out from Rissah and camped at Kehelathah. 23 They set out from Kehelathah and camped at Mount Shapher. 24 They set out from Mount Shapher and camped at Haradah. 25 They set out from Haradah and camped at Makheloth. 26 They set out from Makheloth and camped at Tahath. 27 They set out from Tahath and camped at Terah. 28 They set out from Terah and camped at Mithcah. 29 They set out from Mithcah and camped at Hashmonah. 30 They set out from Hashmonah and camped at Moserah. 31 They set out from Moserah and camped at Bene-Jaakan. 32 They set out from Bene-Jaakan and camped at Hor Haggidgad. 33 They set out from Hor Haggidgad and camped at Jotbathah. 34 They set out from Jotbathah and camped at Abronah. 35 They set out from Abronah and camped at Ezion Geber. 36 They set out from Ezion Geber and camped in the desert of Zin, that is, Kadesh. 37 They set out from Kadesh and camped at Mount Hor, at the edge of the land of Edom.
38 Aaron the priest went up to Mount Hor at the command[az] of Yahweh, and he died there in the fortieth year after the Israelites[ba] had gone out from the land of Egypt, in the fifth month on the first day of the month. 39 Aaron was one hundred and twenty-three years old when he died on Mount Hor.
40 Now the Canaanite, the king of Arad, who was living in the Negev[bb] in the land of Canaan, heard of the coming of the Israelites.[bc]
41 Then they set out from Mount Hor and camped at Zalmonah. 42 They set out from Zalmonah and camped at Punon. 43 They set out from Punon and camped at Oboth. 44 They set out from Oboth and camped at Iye Abarim, the boundary of Moab. 45 They set out from Iyim and camped at Dibon Gad. 46 They set out from Dibon Gad and camped at Almon-Diblatayim. 47 They set out from Almon-Diblatayim and camped in the mountains of Abarim, before Nebo. 48 They set out from the mountains of Abarim and camped on the desert-plateau of Moab by the Jordan across Jericho. 49 They camped by the Jordan, from Beth-Jeshimoth up to Abel Shittim, on the desert-plateau of Moab.
50 Then Yahweh spoke to Moses on the desert-plateau of Moab by the Jordan across Jericho, saying, 51 “Speak to the Israelites[bd] and say to them, ‘When you cross the Jordan into the land of Canaan, 52 you will drive out the inhabitants of the land from your presence, and you will destroy all their idols and all the images of their molten idols, and you will demolish all their high places; 53 you will dispossess the land and live in it because I have given the land to you to possess it. 54 You will distribute the land by lot according to your clans; to the larger group you will give a larger inheritance, and to the smaller group you will give less inheritance. However the lot falls for him, there the lot will be. You will distribute it according to the tribes of your ancestors.[be] 55 But if you do not drive out the inhabitants of the land from your presence, then it will happen that whomever you let remain of them will be like irritants in your eyes and like thorns in your sides; they will be your enemies in the land in which you live. 56 And just as I planned to do to them, I will do to you.’”
The Land of Canaan Is Divided
34 Then Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, 2 “Command the Israelites[bf] and say to them, ‘When you come into the land of Canaan, this is the land that was allotted to you as an inheritance, the land of Canaan according to its boundaries. 3 Your southern edge will be from the desert of Zin toward the side of Edom, and your southern border will be from the end of the Salt Sea[bg] to the east; 4 your boundary will turn from the south to the ascent of Akrabbim[bh] and will pass over to Zin, and its limits will be from the south of Kadesh Barnea; it will continue to Hazar Addar and pass over to Azmon. 5 The boundary will turn from Azmon to the valley of Egypt, and its limits will be to the sea.
6 “‘Your western boundary will be the Great Sea;[bi] this will be your western boundary. 7 Your northern border will be from the Great Sea;[bj] you will make a boundary from the Great Sea[bk] to Mount Hor. 8 From Mount Hor you will make a boundary to reach Hamath; the limits of the territory will be at Zedad. 9 The boundary will go out to Ziphron, and its limits will be at Hazar Enan. This will be your boundary to the north.
10 “‘You will mark out your eastern boundary from Hazar Enan to Shepham; 11 the boundary will go down from Shepham to Riblah from the east side of Ain, and the boundary will go down and border on the eastern side of the Sea of Kinnereth. 12 The boundary will go down to the Jordan, and its limits will be at the Salt Sea.[bl] This will be your land according to its boundaries all around.’”
13 So Moses commanded the Israelites,[bm] saying, “This is the land that you will obtain as an inheritance for yourself by lot, which Yahweh commanded to give to the nine and a half tribes. 14 For the tribe of the children of the Reubenites,[bn] the children of the Gadites,[bo] and the half-tribe of Manasseh took their inheritance according to the house of their families.[bp] 15 The two and a half tribes have taken their inheritance from beyond the Jordan across Jericho, east toward the sunrise.”
16 Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, 17 “These are the names of the men who divide up the land for your inheritance: Eleazar the priest and Joshua son of Nun. 18 You will take one leader from every tribe to divide up the land for inheritance. 19 These are the names of the men: of the tribe of Judah, Caleb son of Jephunneh; 20 of the tribe of the descendants of Simeon, Samuel son of Ammihud; 21 of the tribe of Benjamin, Elidad son of Chislon; 22 of the tribe of the descendants[bq] of Dan, the leader Bukki son of Jogli; 23 of the descendants[br] of Joseph, the tribe of the descendants[bs] of Manasseh, the leader Hanniel son of Ephod. 24 Of the tribe of the descendants[bt] of Ephraim, the leader Kemuel son of Shiphtan; 25 of the tribe of the descendants[bu] of Zebulum, the leader Elizaphan son of Parnach; 26 of the tribe of the descendants[bv] of Issachar, the leader Paltiel son of Azzan; 27 of the tribe of the descendants[bw] of Asher, the leader Ahihud son of Shelomi; 28 of the tribe of the descendants[bx] of Naphtali, the leader Pedahel son of Ammihud.” 29 These are those whom Yahweh commanded to allot to the Israelites[by] the land of Canaan.
Jesus Predicts His Death and Resurrection a Second Time
30 And from there they went out and[a] passed through Galilee. And he did not want anyone to know, 31 for he was teaching his disciples and was telling them, “The Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of men, and they will kill him. And when he[b] is killed, after three days he will rise.” 32 But they did not understand the statement, and they were afraid to ask him.
The Question About Who Is Greatest
33 And they came to Capernaum. And after he[c] was in the house, he asked them, “What were you discussing on the way?” 34 But they were silent, because they had argued with one another on the way about who was greatest. 35 And he sat down and[d] called the twelve and said to them, “If anyone wants to be first, he will be last of all and servant of all.” 36 And he took a young child and[e] had him stand among them.[f] And taking him in his arms, he said to them, 37 “Whoever welcomes one of the young children such as these in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me does not welcome me, but the one who sent me.”
Whoever Is Not Against Us Is for Us
38 John said to him, “Teacher, we saw someone expelling demons in your name, and we tried to prevent him because he was not following us.” 39 But Jesus said, “Do not prevent him, because there is no one who does a miracle in my name and will be able soon afterward to speak evil of me. 40 For whoever is not against us is for us. 41 For whoever gives you a cup of water to drink in my name because you are Christ’s, truly I say to you that he will never lose his reward.
Temptations to Sin
42 “And whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it is better for him if instead a large millstone[g] is placed around his neck and he is thrown into the sea. 43 And if your hand causes you to sin, cut it off! It is better for you to enter into life crippled than, having two hands, to go into hell—into the unquenchable fire![h] 45 And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off! It is better for you to enter into life lame than, having two feet, to be thrown into hell![i] 47 And if your eye causes you to sin, tear it out! It is better for you to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye than, having two eyes, to be thrown into hell, 48 ‘where their worm does not die and the fire is not extinguished.’[j] 49 For everyone will be salted with fire. 50 Salt is good, but if the salt becomes deprived of its salt content, by what can you make it salty? Have salt among yourselves, and be at peace with one another.”
