Qualifications for Overseers and Deacons

This saying[a] is trustworthy: “If someone aspires to the office of overseer,[b] he desires a good work.” The overseer[c] then must be above reproach, the husband of one wife,[d] temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, an able teacher, not a drunkard, not violent, but gentle, not contentious, free from the love of money. He must manage his own household well and keep his children in control without losing his dignity.[e] But if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he care for the church of God? He must not be a recent convert or he may become arrogant[f] and fall into the punishment that the devil will exact.[g] And he must be well thought of by[h] those outside the faith,[i] so that he may not fall into disgrace and be caught by the devil’s trap.[j]

Deacons likewise must be dignified,[k] not two-faced,[l] not given to excessive drinking,[m] not greedy for gain, holding to the mystery of the faith[n] with a clear conscience. 10 And these also must be tested first and then let them serve as deacons if they are found blameless. 11 Likewise also their wives[o] must be dignified, not slanderous, temperate, faithful in every respect. 12 Deacons must be husbands of one wife[p] and good managers of their children and their own households. 13 For those who have served well as deacons gain a good standing for themselves[q] and great boldness in the faith that is in Christ Jesus.[r]

Conduct in God’s Church

14 I hope to come to you soon, but I am writing these instructions[s] to you 15 in case I am delayed, to let you know how people ought to conduct themselves[t] in the household of God, because it is[u] the church of the living God, the support and bulwark of the truth. 16 And we all agree,[v] our religion contains amazing revelation:[w]

He[x] was revealed in the flesh,
vindicated by the Spirit,[y]
seen by angels,
proclaimed among Gentiles,
believed on in the world,
taken up in glory.

Timothy’s Ministry in the Later Times

Now the Spirit explicitly says that in the later times some will desert the faith and occupy themselves[z] with deceiving spirits and demonic teachings,[aa] influenced by the hypocrisy of liars[ab] whose consciences are seared.[ac] They will prohibit marriage and require abstinence from foods that God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth. For every creation of God is good and no food[ad] is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving. For it is sanctified by God’s word and by prayer.

By pointing out such things to the brothers and sisters,[ae] you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, having nourished yourself on the words of the faith and of the good teaching that you have followed.[af] But reject those myths[ag] fit only for the godless and gullible,[ah] and train yourself for godliness. For “physical exercise[ai] has some value, but godliness is valuable in every way. It holds promise for the present life and for the life to come.” This saying[aj] is trustworthy and deserves full acceptance. 10 In fact this is why[ak] we work hard and struggle,[al] because we have set our hope on the living God, who is the Savior of all people,[am] especially of believers.

11 Command and teach these things. 12 Let no one look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in your speech, conduct, love, faithfulness,[an] and purity. 13 Until I come, give attention to the public reading of scripture,[ao] to exhortation, to teaching. 14 Do not neglect the spiritual gift you have,[ap] given to you and confirmed by prophetic words[aq] when the elders laid hands on you.[ar] 15 Take pains with these things; be absorbed in them, so that everyone will see your progress.[as] 16 Be conscientious about how you live and what you teach.[at] Persevere in this, because by doing so you will save both yourself and those who listen to you.
