1 Corinthians 2-3

Chapter 2

When I came to you, brothers, proclaiming the mystery of God,[a] I did not come with sublimity of words or of wisdom.(A) For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ, and him crucified.(B) I came to you in weakness[b] and fear and much trembling, and my message and my proclamation were not with persuasive [words of] wisdom,[c] but with a demonstration of spirit and power,(C) so that your faith might rest not on human wisdom but on the power of God.(D)

The True Wisdom.[d] Yet we do speak a wisdom to those who are mature, but not a wisdom of this age, nor of the rulers of this age who are passing away. Rather, we speak God’s wisdom,[e] mysterious, hidden, which God predetermined before the ages for our glory, and which none of the rulers of this age[f] knew; for, if they had known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. But as it is written:

“What eye has not seen, and ear has not heard,
and what has not entered the human heart,
what God has prepared for those who love him,”(E)

10 (F)this God has revealed to us through the Spirit.

For the Spirit scrutinizes everything, even the depths of God. 11 Among human beings, who knows what pertains to a person except the spirit of the person that is within? Similarly, no one knows what pertains to God except the Spirit of God. 12 We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit that is from God, so that we may understand the things freely given us by God. 13 And we speak about them not with words taught by human wisdom, but with words taught by the Spirit, describing spiritual realities in spiritual terms.[g]

14 Now the natural person[h] does not accept what pertains to the Spirit of God, for to him it is foolishness, and he cannot understand it, because it is judged spiritually. 15 The spiritual person, however, can judge everything but is not subject to judgment[i] by anyone.

16 For “who has known the mind of the Lord, so as to counsel him?” But we have the mind of Christ.(G)

Chapter 3

[j]Brothers, I could not talk to you as spiritual people, but as fleshly people,[k] as infants in Christ. I fed you milk, not solid food, because you were unable to take it. Indeed, you are still not able, even now,(H) for you are still of the flesh. While there is jealousy and rivalry among you,[l] are you not of the flesh and behaving in an ordinary human way?(I) Whenever someone says, “I belong to Paul,” and another, “I belong to Apollos,” are you not merely human?(J)

The Role of God’s Ministers.[m] What is Apollos, after all, and what is Paul? Ministers[n] through whom you became believers, just as the Lord assigned each one. I planted, Apollos watered, but God caused the growth.(K) Therefore, neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who causes the growth. The one who plants and the one who waters are equal, and each will receive wages in proportion to his labor. For we are God’s co-workers; you are God’s field, God’s building.(L)

10 [o]According to the grace of God given to me, like a wise master builder I laid a foundation, and another is building upon it. But each one must be careful how he builds upon it, 11 for no one can lay a foundation other than the one that is there, namely, Jesus Christ. 12 If anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, or straw, 13 the work of each will come to light, for the Day[p] will disclose it. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire [itself] will test the quality of each one’s work.(M) 14 If the work stands that someone built upon the foundation, that person will receive a wage. 15 But if someone’s work is burned up, that one will suffer loss; the person will be saved,[q] but only as through fire. 16 Do you not know that you are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?(N) 17 If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy that person; for the temple of God, which you are, is holy.[r]

18 Let no one deceive himself. If anyone among you considers himself wise in this age, let him become a fool so as to become wise.(O) 19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in the eyes of God, for it is written:(P)

“He catches the wise in their own ruses,”

20 and again:

“The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are vain.”(Q)

21 [s]So let no one boast about human beings, for everything belongs to you,(R) 22 Paul or Apollos or Cephas, or the world or life or death, or the present or the future: all belong to you, 23 and you to Christ, and Christ to God.
