The Prophecy of Simeon

25 Now[a] there was a man in Jerusalem named Simeon who was righteous[b] and devout, looking for the restoration[c] of Israel, and the Holy Spirit[d] was upon him. 26 It[e] had been revealed[f] to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die[g] before[h] he had seen the Lord’s Christ.[i] 27 So[j] Simeon,[k] directed by the Spirit,[l] came into the temple courts,[m] and when the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what was customary according to the law,[n] 28 Simeon[o] took him in his arms and blessed God, saying,[p]

29 “Now, according to your word,[q] Sovereign Lord,[r] permit[s] your servant[t] to depart[u] in peace.
30 For my eyes have seen your salvation[v]
31 that you have prepared in the presence of all peoples:[w]
32 a light,[x]
for revelation to the Gentiles,
and for glory[y] to your people Israel.”

33 So[z] the child’s[aa] father[ab] and mother were amazed[ac] at what was said about him. 34 Then[ad] Simeon blessed them and said to his mother Mary, “Listen carefully:[ae] This child[af] is destined to be the cause of the falling and rising[ag] of many in Israel and to be a sign that will be rejected.[ah] 35 Indeed, as a result of him the thoughts[ai] of many hearts will be revealed[aj]—and a sword[ak] will pierce your own soul as well!”[al]

The Testimony of Anna

36 There was also a prophetess, Anna the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was very old,[am] having been married to her husband for seven years until his death. 37 She had lived as a widow since then for eighty-four years.[an] She never left the temple, worshiping with fasting and prayer night and day.[ao] 38 At that moment,[ap] she came up to them[aq] and began to give thanks to God and to speak[ar] about the child[as] to all who were waiting for the redemption of Jerusalem.[at]

39 So[au] when Joseph and Mary[av] had performed[aw] everything according to the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own town[ax] of Nazareth. 40 And the child grew and became strong,[ay] filled with wisdom,[az] and the favor[ba] of God[bb] was upon him.

Jesus in the Temple

41 Now[bc] Jesus’[bd] parents went to Jerusalem every[be] year for the Feast of the Passover.[bf] 42 When[bg] he was twelve years old,[bh] they went up[bi] according to custom. 43 But[bj] when the feast was over,[bk] as they were returning home,[bl] the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem. His[bm] parents[bn] did not know it, 44 but (because they assumed that he was in their group of travelers)[bo] they went a day’s journey. Then[bp] they began to look for him among their relatives and acquaintances.[bq] 45 When[br] they did not find him, they returned to Jerusalem[bs] to look for him. 46 After[bt] three days[bu] they found him in the temple courts,[bv] sitting among the teachers,[bw] listening to them and asking them questions. 47 And all who heard Jesus[bx] were astonished[by] at his understanding and his answers. 48 When[bz] his parents[ca] saw him, they were overwhelmed. His[cb] mother said to him, “Child,[cc] why have you treated[cd] us like this? Look, your father and I have been looking for you anxiously.”[ce] 49 But[cf] he replied,[cg] “Why were you looking for me?[ch] Didn’t you know that I must be in my Father’s house?”[ci] 50 Yet[cj] his parents[ck] did not understand[cl] the remark[cm] he made[cn] to them. 51 Then[co] he went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient[cp] to them. But[cq] his mother kept all these things[cr] in her heart.[cs]

52 And Jesus increased[ct] in wisdom and in stature, and in favor with God and with people.
