Deuteronomy 12

Laws of the Sanctuary

12 “These are the statutes and the judgments which you shall carefully observe in the land which the Lord, the God of your fathers, has given you to possess [a](A)as long as you live on the [b]earth. You shall utterly destroy all the places where the nations whom you shall dispossess serve their gods, on the (B)high mountains and on the hills and under every green tree. (C)You shall tear down their altars and smash their sacred pillars and burn their [c]Asherim with fire, and you shall cut down the engraved images of their gods and (D)obliterate their name from that place. You shall not act like this toward the Lord your God. (E)But you shall seek the Lord at the place which the Lord your God will choose from all your tribes, to establish His name there for His dwelling, and there you shall come. There you shall bring your burnt offerings, your sacrifices, (F)your tithes, the [d]contribution of your hand, your votive offerings, your freewill offerings, and the firstborn of your herd and of your flock. There also you and your households shall eat before the Lord your God, and (G)rejoice in all [e]your undertakings in which the Lord your God has blessed you.

“You shall not do at all what we are doing here today, every man doing whatever is right in his own eyes; for you have not as yet come to (H)the resting place and the (I)inheritance which the Lord your God is giving you. 10 When you cross the Jordan and live in the land which the Lord your God is giving you to inherit, and (J)He gives you rest from all your enemies around you so that you live in security, 11 (K)then it shall come about that the place in which the Lord your God will choose for His name to dwell, there you shall bring all that I command you: your burnt offerings and your sacrifices, your tithes and the [f]contribution of your hand, and all your choice votive offerings which you will vow to the Lord. 12 And you shall (L)rejoice before the Lord your God, you and your sons and daughters, your male and female servants, and the (M)Levite who is within your gates, since (N)he has no portion or inheritance with you.

13 (O)Be careful that you do not offer your burnt offerings in every cultic place you see, 14 but in the place which the Lord chooses in one of your tribes, there you shall offer your burnt offerings, and there you shall do all that I command you.

15 (P)However, you may slaughter and eat meat within any of your gates, [g]whatever you desire, according to the blessing of the Lord your God which He has given you; the unclean and the clean may eat of it, as of (Q)the gazelle and the deer. 16 (R)Only you shall not eat the blood; (S)you are to pour it out on the ground like water. 17 (T)You are not allowed to eat within your gates the tithe of your grain or new wine or oil, or the firstborn of your herd or flock, or any of your votive offerings which you vow, or your freewill offerings, or the [h]contribution of your hand. 18 But (U)you shall eat them before the Lord your God in (V)the place which the Lord your God will choose, you and your son and daughter, and your male and female servants, and the (W)Levite who is within your gates; and you shall (X)rejoice before the Lord your God in all [i]your undertakings. 19 (Y)Be careful that you do not forsake the Levite [j]as long as you live in your land.

20 “When the Lord your God extends your border (Z)as He has promised you, and you say, ‘I will eat meat,’ because [k]you desire to eat meat, then you may eat meat, [l]whatever you desire. 21 If the place which the Lord your God chooses to put His name is too far from you, then you may slaughter of your herd and flock which the Lord has given you, as I have commanded you; and you may eat within your gates [m]whatever you desire. 22 Just as a gazelle or a deer is eaten, so you will eat it; the unclean and the clean alike may eat of it. 23 Only be sure (AA)not to eat the blood, for the blood is the [n]life, and you shall not eat the [o]life with the flesh. 24 You shall not eat it; you shall pour it out on the ground like water. 25 You shall not eat it, so that (AB)it may be well with you and your sons after you, for (AC)you will be doing what is right in the sight of the Lord. 26 (AD)Only your holy things which you may have and your votive offerings, you shall take and go to the place which the Lord chooses. 27 And (AE)you shall offer your burnt offerings, the flesh and the blood, on the altar of the Lord your God; and the blood of your sacrifices shall be poured out on the altar of the Lord your God, and (AF)you shall eat the flesh.

28 “Be careful to listen to all these words which I command you, so that (AG)it may be well with you and your sons after you forever, for you will be doing what is good and right in the sight of the Lord your God.

29 “When (AH)the Lord your God cuts off before you the nations which you are going in to dispossess, and you dispossess them and dwell in their land, 30 beware that you are not ensnared [p]to follow them, after they are destroyed before you, and that you do not inquire after their gods, saying, ‘How do these nations serve their gods, that I also may do likewise?’ 31 (AI)You shall not behave thus toward the Lord your God, for every abominable act which the Lord hates they have done for their gods; for (AJ)they even burn their sons and daughters in the fire to their gods.

32 [q](AK)Whatever I command you, you shall be careful to do; (AL)you shall not add to nor take away from it.

Psalm 97-98

The Lord’s Power and Dominion.

97 (A)The Lord [a]reigns, let the (B)earth rejoice;
Let the many [b](C)islands be glad.
(D)Clouds and thick darkness surround Him;
(E)Righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne.
(F)Fire goes before Him
And (G)burns up His adversaries round about.
His (H)lightnings lit up the world;
The earth saw and (I)trembled.
The mountains (J)melted like wax at the presence of the Lord,
At the presence of the (K)Lord of the whole earth.
The (L)heavens declare His righteousness,
And (M)all the peoples have seen His glory.

Let all those be ashamed who serve (N)graven images,
Who boast themselves of (O)idols;
[c](P)Worship Him, all you [d]gods.
Zion [e]heard this and (Q)was glad,
And the daughters of Judah have rejoiced
Because of Your judgments, O Lord.
For You are the Lord (R)Most High over all the earth;
You are exalted far (S)above all [f]gods.

10 (T)Hate evil, you who love the Lord,
Who (U)preserves the souls of His godly ones;
He (V)delivers them from the hand of the wicked.
11 (W)Light is sown like seed for the righteous
And (X)gladness for the upright in heart.
12 Be (Y)glad in the Lord, you righteous ones,
And (Z)give thanks [g]to His holy name.

A Call to Praise the Lord for His Righteousness.

A Psalm.

98 O sing to the Lord a (AA)new song,
For He has done (AB)wonderful things,
His (AC)right hand and His (AD)holy arm have [h]gained the victory for Him.
(AE)The Lord has made known His salvation;
He has (AF)revealed His [i]righteousness in the sight of the nations.
He has (AG)remembered His lovingkindness and His faithfulness to the house of Israel;
(AH)All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.

(AI)Shout joyfully to the Lord, all the earth;
(AJ)Break forth and sing for joy and sing praises.
Sing praises to the Lord with the (AK)lyre,
With the lyre and the [j](AL)sound of melody.
With (AM)trumpets and the sound of the horn
(AN)Shout joyfully before (AO)the King, the Lord.

Let the (AP)sea roar and [k]all it contains,
The (AQ)world and those who dwell in it.
Let the (AR)rivers clap their hands,
Let the (AS)mountains sing together for joy
Before the Lord, for He is coming to (AT)judge the earth;
He will judge the world with righteousness
And (AU)the peoples with [l]equity.

Isaiah 40

The Greatness of God

40 (A)Comfort, O comfort My people,” says your God.
(B)Speak [a]kindly to Jerusalem;
And call out to her, that her [b](C)warfare has ended,
That her [c](D)iniquity has been removed,
That she has received of the Lord’s hand
(E)Double for all her sins.”

(F)A voice [d]is calling,
(G)Clear the way for the Lord in the wilderness;
Make smooth in the desert a highway for our God.
“Let every valley be lifted up,
And every mountain and hill be made low;
And let the rough ground become a plain,
And the rugged terrain a broad valley;
[e]Then the (H)glory of the Lord will be revealed,
And (I)all flesh will see it together;
For the (J)mouth of the Lord has spoken.”
A voice says, “Call out.”
Then [f]he answered, “What shall I call out?”
(K)All flesh is grass, and all its [g]loveliness is like the flower of the field.
The (L)grass withers, the flower fades,
[h]When the (M)breath of the Lord blows upon it;
Surely the people are grass.
The grass withers, the flower fades,
But (N)the word of our God stands forever.

Get yourself up on a (O)high mountain,
O Zion, bearer of (P)good news,
Lift up your voice mightily,
O Jerusalem, bearer of good news;
Lift it up, do not fear.
Say to the (Q)cities of Judah,
(R)Here is your God!”
10 Behold, the Lord [i]God will come (S)with might,
With His (T)arm ruling for Him.
Behold, His (U)reward is with Him
And His recompense before Him.
11 Like a shepherd He will (V)tend His flock,
In His arm He will gather the lambs
And carry them in His bosom;
He will gently lead the nursing ewes.

12 Who has (W)measured the [j]waters in the hollow of His hand,
And marked off the heavens by the [k]span,
And [l]calculated the dust of the earth by the measure,
And weighed the mountains in a balance
And the hills in a pair of scales?
13 (X)Who has [m]directed the Spirit of the Lord,
Or as His (Y)counselor has informed Him?
14 (Z)With whom did He consult and who (AA)gave Him understanding?
And who taught Him in the path of justice and taught Him knowledge
And informed Him of the way of understanding?
15 Behold, the (AB)nations are like a drop from a bucket,
And are regarded as a speck of (AC)dust on the scales;
Behold, He lifts up the [n]islands like fine dust.
16 Even Lebanon is not enough to burn,
Nor its (AD)beasts enough for a burnt offering.
17 (AE)All the nations are as nothing before Him,
They are regarded by Him as less than nothing and [o]meaningless.

18 (AF)To whom then will you liken God?
Or what likeness will you compare with Him?
19 As for the [p](AG)idol, a craftsman casts it,
A goldsmith (AH)plates it with gold,
And a silversmith fashions chains of silver.
20 He who is too impoverished for such an offering
Selects a (AI)tree that does not rot;
He seeks out for himself a skillful craftsman
To [q]prepare [r]an idol that (AJ)will not totter.

21 (AK)Do you not know? Have you not heard?
Has it not been declared to you from the beginning?
Have you not understood (AL)from the foundations of the earth?
22 It is He who [s]sits above the [t](AM)circle of the earth,
And its inhabitants are like (AN)grasshoppers,
Who (AO)stretches out the heavens like a (AP)curtain
And spreads them out like a (AQ)tent to dwell in.
23 He it is who reduces (AR)rulers to nothing,
Who (AS)makes the judges of the earth [u]meaningless.
24 [v]Scarcely have they been planted,
[w]Scarcely have they been sown,
[x]Scarcely has their stock taken root in the earth,
But He merely blows on them, and they wither,
And the (AT)storm carries them away like stubble.
25 (AU)To whom then will you liken Me
That I would be his equal?” says the Holy One.
26 (AV)Lift up your eyes on high
And see (AW)who has created these stars,
The (AX)One who leads forth their host by number,
He calls them all by name;
Because of the (AY)greatness of His might and the [y]strength of His power,
(AZ)Not one of them is missing.

27 (BA)Why do you say, O Jacob, and assert, O Israel,
“My way is (BB)hidden from the Lord,
And the (BC)justice due me [z]escapes the notice of (BD)my God”?
28 (BE)Do you not know? Have you not heard?
The (BF)Everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth
Does not become weary or tired.
His understanding is (BG)inscrutable.
29 He gives strength to the (BH)weary,
And to him who lacks might He (BI)increases power.
30 Though (BJ)youths grow weary and tired,
And vigorous (BK)young men stumble badly,
31 Yet those who [aa]wait for the Lord
Will (BL)gain new strength;
They will [ab](BM)mount up with [ac]wings like eagles,
They will run and not get tired,
They will walk and not become weary.

Revelation 10

The Angel and the Little Book

10 I saw another (A)strong angel (B)coming down out of heaven, clothed with a cloud; and the (C)rainbow was upon his head, and (D)his face was like the sun, and his (E)feet like pillars of fire; and he had in his hand a (F)little book which was open. He placed (G)his right foot on the sea and his left on the land; and he cried out with a loud voice, (H)as when a lion roars; and when he had cried out, the (I)seven peals of thunder [a]uttered their voices. When the seven peals of thunder had spoken, (J)I was about to write; and I (K)heard a voice from heaven saying, “(L)Seal up the things which the seven peals of thunder have spoken and do not write them.” Then the angel whom I saw standing on the sea and on the land (M)lifted up his right hand to heaven, (N)and swore by (O)Him who lives forever and ever, (P)who created heaven and the things in it, and the earth and the things in it, and the sea and the things in it, that (Q)there will be delay no longer, but in the days of the voice of the (R)seventh angel, when he is about to sound, then (S)the mystery of God is finished, as He [b]preached to His servants the prophets.

Then (T)the voice which I heard from heaven, I heard again speaking with me, and saying, “Go, take (U)the [c]book which is open in the hand of the angel who (V)stands on the sea and on the land.” So I went to the angel, telling him to give me the little book. And he *said to me, “(W)Take it and eat it; it will make your stomach bitter, but in your mouth it will be sweet as honey.” 10 I took the little book out of the angel’s hand and ate it, and in my mouth it was sweet as honey; and when I had eaten it, my stomach was made bitter. 11 And (X)they *said to me, “You must (Y)prophesy again concerning (Z)many peoples and nations and tongues and (AA)kings.”
