Offerings of the Leaders

Now on (A)the day that Moses had finished setting up the tabernacle, he (B)anointed it and consecrated it with all its furnishings and the altar and all its utensils; he anointed them and consecrated them also. Then (C)the leaders of Israel, the heads of their fathers’ households, (D)made an offering (they were the leaders of the tribes; they were the ones who [a]were over the [b]numbered men). When they brought their offering before the Lord, six (E)covered carts and twelve oxen, a cart for every two of the leaders and an ox for each one, then they presented them before the tabernacle. Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, “Accept these things from them, that they may be [c]used in the service of the tent of meeting, and you shall give them to the Levites, to each man according to his service.” So Moses took the carts and the oxen and gave them to the Levites. Two carts and four oxen he gave to the sons of Gershon, according to (F)their service, and four carts and eight oxen he gave to the sons of Merari, according to (G)their service, under the [d]direction of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest. Psalm 42-43

BOOK 2

Thirsting for God in Trouble and Exile.

For the choir director. A [a]Maskil of the sons of Korah.

42 As the deer [b]pants for the water brooks,
So my soul [c](A)pants for You, O God.
My soul (B)thirsts for God, for the (C)living God;
When shall I come and [d](D)appear before God?
My (E)tears have been my food day and night,
While they (F)say to me all day long, “Where is your God?”
These things I remember and I (G)pour out my soul within me.
For I (H)used to go along with the throng and [e]lead them in procession to the house of God,
With the voice of (I)joy and thanksgiving, a multitude keeping festival.

(J)Why are you [f](K)in despair, O my soul?
And why have you become (L)disturbed within me?
[g](M)Hope in God, for I shall [h]again praise [i]Him
For the [j](N)help of His presence.
O my God, my soul is [k]in despair within me;
Therefore I (O)remember You from (P)the land of the Jordan
And the [l]peaks of (Q)Hermon, from Mount Mizar.
Deep calls to deep at the sound of Your waterfalls;
All Your (R)breakers and Your waves have rolled over me.
The Lord will (S)command His lovingkindness in the daytime;
And His song will be with me (T)in the night,
A prayer to (U)the God of my life.

I will say to God (V)my rock, “Why have You forgotten me?
Why do I go (W)mourning [m]because of the (X)oppression of the enemy?”
10 As a shattering of my bones, my adversaries revile me,
While they (Y)say to me all day long, “Where is your God?”
11 (Z)Why are you [n]in despair, O my soul?
And why have you become disturbed within me?
[o]Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him,
The [p]help of my countenance and my God.

Prayer for Deliverance.

43 (AA)Vindicate me, O God, and (AB)plead my case against an ungodly nation;
[q]O deliver me from (AC)the deceitful and unjust man!
For You are the (AD)God of my strength; why have You (AE)rejected me?
Why do I go (AF)mourning [r]because of the oppression of the enemy?

O send out Your (AG)light and Your truth, let them lead me;
Let them bring me to Your (AH)holy hill
And to Your (AI)dwelling places.
Then I will go to (AJ)the altar of God,
To God [s]my exceeding (AK)joy;
And upon the (AL)lyre I shall praise You, O God, my God.

(AM)Why are you [t]in despair, O my soul?
And why are you disturbed within me?
[u]Hope in God, for I shall [v]again praise Him,
The [w]help of my countenance and my God.

Song of Solomon 5

The Torment of Separation

[a]I have (A)come into my garden, (B)my sister, my bride;
I have gathered my (C)myrrh along with my balsam.
I have eaten my honeycomb [b]and my (D)honey;
I have (E)drunk my wine [c]and my milk.
Eat, (F)friends;
Drink and [d]imbibe deeply, O lovers.”

[e]I was asleep but my heart was awake.
A voice! My beloved was knocking:
‘Open to me, (G)my sister, my darling,
(H)My dove, my perfect one!
For my head is [f]drenched with dew,
My (I)locks with the [g]damp of the night.’
“I have (J)taken off my dress,
How can I put it on again?
I have (K)washed my feet,
How can I dirty them again?
“My beloved extended his hand through the opening,
And my [h](L)feelings were aroused for him.
“I arose to open to my beloved;
And my hands (M)dripped with myrrh,
And my fingers with [i]liquid myrrh,
On the handles of the bolt.
“I opened to my beloved,
But my beloved had (N)turned away and had gone!
My [j]heart went out to him as he (O)spoke.
I (P)searched for him but I did not find him;
I (Q)called him but he did not answer me.
“The (R)watchmen who make the rounds in the city found me,
They struck me and wounded me;
The guardsmen of the walls took away my shawl from me.
“I (S)adjure you, O daughters of Jerusalem,
If you find my beloved,
As to what you will tell him:
For (T)I am lovesick.”

[k][l]What kind of beloved is your beloved,
O (U)most beautiful among women?
[m]What kind of beloved is your beloved,
That thus you adjure us?”

Admiration by the Bride

10 [n]My beloved is dazzling and (V)ruddy,
[o](W)Outstanding among ten thousand.
11 “His head is like gold, pure gold;
His (X)locks are like clusters of dates
And black as a raven.
12 “His (Y)eyes are like doves
Beside streams of water,
Bathed in milk,
And [p]reposed in their (Z)setting.
13 “His cheeks are like a (AA)bed of balsam,
Banks of sweet-scented herbs;
His lips are (AB)lilies
(AC)Dripping with liquid myrrh.
14 “His hands are rods of gold
Set with (AD)beryl;
His abdomen is carved ivory
Inlaid with [q](AE)sapphires.
15 “His legs are pillars of alabaster
Set on pedestals of pure gold;
His appearance is like (AF)Lebanon
Choice as the (AG)cedars.
16 “His [r](AH)mouth is full of sweetness.
And he is wholly (AI)desirable.
This is my beloved and this is my friend,
O daughters of Jerusalem.”

Hebrews 5

The Perfect High Priest

For every high priest (A)taken from among men is appointed on behalf of men in (B)things pertaining to God, in order to (C)offer both gifts and sacrifices (D)for sins; [a](E)he can deal gently with the (F)ignorant and (G)misguided, since he himself also is [b](H)beset with weakness; and because of it he is obligated to offer sacrifices (I)for sins, (J)as for the people, so also for himself. And (K)no one takes the honor to himself, but receives it when he is called by God, even (L)as Aaron was.

So also Christ (M)did not glorify Himself so as to become a (N)high priest, but He who (O)said to Him,

(P)You are My Son,
Today I have begotten You”;

just as He says also in another passage,

(Q)You are a priest forever
According to (R)the order of Melchizedek.”

[c]In the days of His flesh, [d](S)He offered up both prayers and supplications with (T)loud crying and tears to the One (U)able to save Him [e]from death, and He [f]was heard because of His (V)piety. Although He was (W)a Son, He learned (X)obedience from the things which He suffered. And having been made (Y)perfect, He became to all those who obey Him the source of eternal salvation, 10 being designated by God as (Z)a high priest according to (AA)the order of Melchizedek.

11 Concerning [g]him we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing. 12 For though [h]by this time you ought to be teachers, you have need again for someone to teach you (AB)the [i](AC)elementary principles of the (AD)oracles of God, and you have come to need (AE)milk and not solid food. 13 For everyone who partakes only of milk is not accustomed to the word of righteousness, for he is an (AF)infant. 14 But solid food is for (AG)the mature, who because of practice have their senses (AH)trained to (AI)discern good and evil.
