2 Samuel 1

The Second Book of Samuel

4 It was told David of Saul’s death. 15 He causeth him to be slain that brought the tidings. 19 He lamenteth the death of Saul and Jonathan.

After the death of Saul, when David was returned from the (A)slaughter of the Amalekites, and had been two days in Ziklag,

Behold, a man came the third day out of the host from Saul with [a]his clothes rent, and earth upon his head: and when he came to David, he fell to the earth, and did obeisance.

Then David said unto him, Whence comest thou? And he said unto him, Out of the host of Israel I am escaped.

And David said unto him, What is done? I pray thee, tell me. Then he said, that the people is fled from the battle, and many of the people are overthrown, and dead, and also Saul and Jonathan his son are dead.

And David said unto the young man that told it him, How knowest thou that Saul and Jonathan his son be dead?

Then the young man that told him, answered, [b]As I came to mount Gilboa, behold, Saul leaned upon his spear, and lo, the chariots and [c]horsemen followed hard after him.

And when he looked back, he saw me, and called me. And I answered, Here am I.

And he said unto me, Who art thou? And I answered him, I am an [d]Amalekite.

Then said he unto me, I pray thee,[e]come upon me, and slay me: for anguish is come upon me, because my [f]life is yet whole in me.

10 So [g]I came upon him, and slew him, and because I was sure that he could not live, after that he had fallen, I took the crown that was upon his head, and the bracelet that was on his arm, and brought them hither unto my lord.

11 Then David took hold on his clothes, (B)and rent them, and likewise all the men that were with him.

12 And they mourned and wept, and fasted until even, for Saul and for Jonathan his son, and for the people of the Lord, and for the house of Israel, because they were slain with the sword.

13 [h]Afterward David said unto the young man that told it him, Whence art thou? And he answered, I am the son of a stranger an Amalekite.

14 And David said unto him, (C)How wast thou not afraid, to put forth thine hand to destroy the Anointed of the Lord?

15 Then David called one of his young men, and said, Go near, and fall upon him. And he smote him that he died.

16 Then said David unto him, [i]Thy blood be upon thine own head: for thine own mouth hath testified against thee, saying, I have slain the Lord’s Anointed.

17 ¶ Then David mourned with this lamentation over Saul, and over Jonathan his son,

18 (Also he bade them teach the children of Judah to [j]shoot, as it is written in the book of (D)[k]Jasher.)

19 O noble Israel, [l]he is slain upon thy high places: how are the mighty overthrown!

20 (E)Tell it not in Gath, nor publish it in the streets of Ashkelon, lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice, lest the daughters of the uncircumcised triumph.

21 Ye mountains of Gilboa, upon you be neither dew nor rain, nor [m]be there fields of offerings: for there the shield of the mighty is cast down, the shield of Saul, as though he had not been anointed with oil.

22 The bow of Jonathan never turned back, neither did the sword of Saul return empty from the blood of the slain, and from the fat of the mighty.

23 Saul and Jonathan were lovely and pleasant in their lives, and in their deaths they were not [n]divided: they were swifter than eagles, they were stronger than lions.

24 Ye daughters of Israel, weep for Saul, which clothed you in scarlet, [o]with pleasures, and hanged ornaments of gold upon your apparel.

25 How were the mighty slain in the midst of the battle! O Jonathan, thou wast slain in thine high places.

26 Woe is me for thee, my brother Jonathan: very kind hast thou been unto me: thy love to me was wonderful, passing the love of [p]women: how are the mighty overthrown, and the weapons of war destroyed!

1 Corinthians 12

12 1 To draw away the Corinthians from contention and pride, he showeth that spiritual gifts are therefore diversely bestowed, 7 that the same being jointly to each other employed, 12 we may grow up together into one body of Christ in such equal proportion and measure, 20 as the members of man’s body do.

Now [a]concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you [b]ignorant.

[c]Ye know that ye were [d]Gentiles, and were carried away unto the dumb idols, as ye were led.

[e]Wherefore I declare unto you, that no man (A)speaking by the spirit of God, calleth Jesus (B)[f]execrable: also no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the holy Ghost.

[g]Now there are diversities of gifts, but the [h]same Spirit.

And there are diversities of administrations, but the same Lord.

And there are diversities of [i]operations, but God is the same which worketh all in all.

But the manifestation of the Spirit is [j]given to every man, to [k]profit withal.

[l]For to one is given by the Spirit the word of [m]wisdom: and to another the word of knowledge, by the same Spirit:

And to another is given faith by the same Spirit: and to another the gifts of healing, by the same Spirit:

10 And to another the [n]operations of great works: and to another, [o]prophecy: and to another, the [p]discerning of spirits: and to another, diversities of tongues: and to another, the interpretation of tongues.

11 (C)And all these things worketh one and the selfsame Spirit, distributing to every man severally [q]as he will.

12 [r]For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of the body, which is one, though they be many, yet are but one body: [s]even so is [t]Christ.

13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into [u]one body, whether we be Jews, or Grecians, whether we be bond, or free, and have been all made to [v]drink into one Spirit.

14 [w]For the body also is not one member, but many.

15 [x]If the foot would say, Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body, is it therefore not of the body?

16 And if the ear would say, Because I am not the eye, I am not of the body, is it therefore not of the body?

17 [y]If the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where were the smelling?

18 But now hath God disposed the members every one of them in the body at his own pleasure.

19 For if they were all one member, where were the body?

20 But now are there many members, yet but one body.

21 [z]And the eye cannot say unto the hand, I have no need of thee: nor the head again to the feet, I have no need of you.

22 Yea, much rather those members of the body, which seem to be [aa]more feeble, are necessary.

23 And upon those members of the body, which we think most unhonest, put we more [ab]honesty on: and our uncomely parts have more comeliness on.

24 For our comely parts need it not: but God hath tempered the body together: and hath given the more honor to that part which lacked,

25 Lest there should be any division in the body: but that the members should have the same [ac]care one for another.

26 [ad]Therefore if one member suffer, all suffer with it: if one member be had in honor, all the members rejoice with it.

27 Now ye are the body of Christ, and members for your [ae]part.

28 (D)And God hath ordained some in the Church: as first Apostles, secondly Prophets, thirdly teachers, then them that do miracles: after that, the gifts of healing, [af]helpers, [ag]governors, diversity of tongues.

29 Are all Apostles? are all Prophets? are all teachers?

30 Are all doers of miracles? have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret?

31 [ah]But desire you the best gifts, and I will yet show you a more excellent way.

Ezekiel 10

10 1 Of the man that took hot burning coals out of the middle of the wheels of the Cherubims. 8 A rehearsal of the vision of the wheels, of the beasts, and of the Cherubims.

And as I looked, behold in the (A)firmament that was above the head of the [a]Cherubims there appeared upon them like unto the similitude of a throne, as it were a sapphire stone.

And he spake unto the man clothed with linen, and said, Go in between the wheels, even under the Cherub, and fill thine hands with coals of fire from between the Cherubims, and scatter them over [b]the city. And he went in my sight.

Now the Cherubims stood upon the right side of the house, when the man went in, and the cloud filled the inner court.

Then the glory of the Lord [c]went up from the Cherub, and stood over the door of the house, and the house was filled with the cloud, and the court was filled with the brightness of the Lord’s glory.

And the [d]sound of the Cherubims’ wings was heard into the utter court, as the voice of the Almighty God, when he speaketh.

And when he had commanded the man clothed with linen, saying, Take fire from between the wheels, and from between the Cherubims, then he went in and stood beside the wheel.

And one Cherub stretched forth his hand from between the Cherubims unto the fire that was between the Cherubims, and took thereof, and put it into the hands of him that was clothed with linen: who took it and went out.

And there appeared in the Cherubims, the likeness of a man’s hand under their wings.

And when I looked up, behold, four wheels were beside the Cherubims, one wheel by one Cherub, and another wheel by another Cherub, and the appearance of the wheels was as the color of a [e]Chrysolite stone.

10 And their appearance (for they were all four of one fashion) was as if one wheel had been in another wheel.

11 When they went forth, they went upon their four sides, and they returned not as they went: but to the place whither the first went, they went after it, and they [f]turned not as they went.

12 And their whole body, and their [g]rings, and their hands, and their wings, and the wheels were full of eyes round about, even in the same four wheels.

13 And the Cherub cried to these wheels in mine hearing, saying, O wheel.

14 And every beast had four faces: the first face was the face of a Cherub, and the second face was the face of a man, and the third the face of a lion, and the fourth the face of an Eagle.

15 And the Cherubims were lifted up: (B)this is the beast that I saw at the river Chebar.

16 And when the Cherubims went, the wheels went by them: and when the Cherubims lifted up their wings to mount up from the earth, the same wheels also turned not from beside them.

17 When the Cherubims stood, they stood: and when they were lifted up, they lifted themselves up also: for the [h]spirit of the beast was in them.

18 [i]Then the glory of the Lord departed from above the door of the house, and stood upon the Cherubims.

19 And the Cherubims lifted up their wings and mounted up from the earth in my sight: when they went out, the wheels also were beside them: and everyone stood at the entry of the gate of the Lord’s House at the East side, and the glory of the God of Israel was upon them on high.

20 (C)This is the [j]beast that I saw under the God of Israel by the river Chebar, and I knew that they were the Cherubims.

21 Every one had four faces, and every one four wings, and the likeness of man’s hands was under their wings.

22 And the likeness of their faces was the selfsame faces, which I saw by the river Chebar, and the appearance of the Cherubims was the selfsame, and they went every one straight forward.

Psalm 49

49 1 The holy Ghost calleth all men to the consideration of man’s life, 7 showing them not to be most blessed that are most wealthy, and therefore not to be feared: but contrariwise he lifteth up our minds to consider how all things are ruled by God’s providence: 14 Who as he judgeth these worldly misers to everlasting torments, 15 so doth he preserve his, and will reward them in the day of the resurrection, 1 Thess. 1:6.

To him that excelleth. A Psalm committed to the sons of Korah.

Hear [a]this all ye people: give ear, all ye that dwell in the world,

As well low as high, both rich and poor.

My mouth shall speak of wisdom, and the meditation of mine heart is of knowledge.

I will incline mine ear to a parable, and utter my grave matter upon the harp.

Wherefore should I [b]fear in the evil days, when iniquity shall compass me about, as at mine heels?

They trust in their [c]goods, and boast themselves in the multitude of their riches.

Yet a man can by no means redeem his brother: he cannot give his ransom to God,

(So [d]precious is the redemption of their souls, [e]and the continuance forever)

That he may live still forever, and not see the grave.

10 For he seeth that wise men [f]die: and also that the ignorant and foolish perish, and leave their riches for [g]others.

11 Yet they think their houses and their habitations shall continue forever, even from generation to generation, and [h]call their lands by their names.

12 But man shall not continue in honor; he is like the [i]beasts that die.

13 This their way uttereth their foolishness; yet their posterity [j]delight in their talk. Selah.

14 [k]Like sheep they lie in grave; [l]death devoureth them; and the righteous shall have domination over them in the [m]morning; for their beauty shall consume, when they shall go from their house to grave.

15 But God shall deliver my soul from the power of the grave; [n]for he will receive me. Selah.

16 Be not thou afraid when one is made rich, and when the glory of his house is increased.

17 (A)For he shall take nothing away, when he dieth, neither shall his pomp descend after him.

18 For while he lived, [o]he rejoiced himself; and [p]men will praise thee, when thou makest much of thyself.

19 [q][r]He shall enter into the generation of his fathers, [s]and they shall not live forever.

20 Man is in honor; and [t]understandeth not; he is like to beasts that perish.
