27 2 David fleeth to Achish King of Gath, who giveth him Ziklag. 8 David destroyeth certain of the Philistines. 10 Achish is deceived by David.
1 And David said in his heart, I shall now [a]perish one day by the hand of Saul: is it not better for me that I save myself in the land of the Philistines, and that Saul may have no hope of me to seek me anymore in all the coasts of Israel, and so escape out of his hand?
2 David therefore arose, and he, and the six hundred men that were with him, went unto Achish the son of Maoch king of Gath.
3 And David [b]dwelt with Achish at Gath, he, and his men, every man with his household, David with his two wives, Ahinoam the Jezreelite, and Abigail Nabal’s wife the Carmelite.
4 And it was told Saul that David was fled to Gath: so he sought no more for him.
5 And David said unto Achish, If I have now found grace in thine eyes, [c]let them give me a place in some other city of the country, that I may dwell there: for why should thy servant dwell in the head city of the kingdom with thee?
6 Then Achish gave him Ziklag that same day: therefore Ziklag pertaineth unto the kings of Judah unto this day.
7 ¶ And [d]the time that David dwelt in the country of the Philistines, was four months and certain days.
8 Then David and his men went up, and invaded the [e]Geshurites, and the Girzites, and the Amalekites: for they inhabited the land from the beginning, from the way, as thou goest to Shur, even unto the land of Egypt.
9 And David smote the land, and left neither man nor woman alive, and took sheep, and oxen, and asses, and camels, and apparel, and returned and came to Achish.
10 And Achish said, [f]Where have ye been a roving this day? And David answered, Against the South of Judah, and against the South of the [g]Jerahmeelites, and against the South of the Kenites.
11 And David saved neither man nor woman alive, to bring them to Gath, saying, Lest they should tell on us, and say, So did David, and so will be his manner all the while that he dwelleth in the country of the Philistines.
12 And Achish believed David, saying, [h]He hath made his people of Israel utterly to abhor him: therefore he shall be my servant forever.
8 1 From this place unto the end of the tenth Chapter, he willeth them not to be at the Gentiles’ profane banquets. 13 He restraineth the abuse of Christian liberty, 11 and showeth that knowledge must be tempered with charity.
1 And as [a]touching things sacrificed unto idols, we know that we [b]all have knowledge: knowledge [c]puffeth up, but love [d]edifieth.
2 Now, if any man think that he knoweth anything, he knoweth nothing, yet as he ought to know.
3 But if any man love God, the same is known of him.
4 [e]Concerning therefore the eating of things sacrificed unto [f]idols, we know that an idol is [g]nothing in the world, and that there is none other God but one.
5 For though there be that are called gods, whether in heaven, or in earth (as there be many gods, and many lords.)
6 Yet unto us there is but one God, which is that Father, [h]of whom are all things, and we [i]in him, and (A)[j]one Lord Jesus Christ, [k]by whom are all things, and we by him.
7 [l]But every man hath not that knowledge: for [m]many having [n]conscience of the idol, until this hour, eat as a thing sacrificed unto the idol, and so their conscience being weak, is defiled.
8 [o]But meat maketh us not acceptable to God, for neither if we eat, have we the more: neither if we eat not, have we the less.
9 But take heed lest by any means this power of yours be an occasion of falling, to them that are weak.
10 [p]For if any man see thee which hast knowledge, sit at table in the idols’ temple, shall not the conscience of him which is weak, be boldened, to eat those things which are sacrificed to idols?
11 [q]And through thy knowledge shall the (B)weak brother perish, for whom Christ died.
12 [r]Now when ye sin so against the brethren, and wound their weak conscience, ye sin against Christ.
13 (C)[s]Wherefore if meat offend my brother, I will eat no flesh while the world standeth, that I may not offend my brother.
6 He showeth that Jerusalem shall be destroyed for their idolatry. 8 He prophesieth the repentance of the remnant of the people, and their deliverance.
1 Again the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,
2 Son of man, Set thy face towards the (A)mountains of Israel, and prophesy against them,
3 And say, Ye mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Lord God: thus saith the Lord God to the [a]mountains and to the hills, to the rivers and to the valleys, Behold, I, even I will bring a sword upon you, and I will destroy your high places:
4 And your altars shall be desolate, and your images of the [b]Sun shall be broken: and I will cast down your slain men before your idols.
5 And I will lay the dead carcasses of the children of Israel before their [c]idols, and I will (B)scatter your bones round about your altars.
6 In all your dwelling places the cities shall be desolate, and the high places shall be laid waste, so that your altars shall be made waste and desolate, and your idols shall be broken and cease, and your images of the Sun shall be cut in pieces, and your works shall be abolished.
7 And the slain shall fall in the midst of you, and ye shall know that I am the Lord.
8 Yet will I leave a remnant, [d]that you may have some that shall escape the sword among the nations, when you shall be scattered through the countries.
9 And they that escape of you, shall remember me among the nations, where they shall be in captivity, because I am grieved for their whorish hearts, which have departed from me, and for their eyes, which have gone a whoring after their idols, and they [e]shall be displeased in themselves for the evils which they have committed in all their abominations.
10 And they shall know that I am the Lord, and that I have not said in vain, that I would do this evil unto them.
11 Thus saith the Lord God, [f]Smite with thine hand, and stretch forth with thy foot, and say, Alas, for all the wicked abominations of the house of Israel: for they shall fall by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence.
12 He that is far off, shall die of the pestilence, and he that is near, shall fall by the sword, and he that remaineth and is besieged, shall die by the famine: thus will I accomplish my wrath upon them.
13 Then [g]ye shall know, that I am the Lord, when their slain men shall be among their idols round about their altars, upon every high hill in all the tops of the mountains, and under every green tree, and under every thick oak, which is the place where they did offer sweet savor to all their idols.
14 So will I (C) stretch mine hand upon them, and make the land waste and desolate [h]from the wilderness unto Diblath in all their habitations, and they shall know that I am the Lord.
44 1 The faithful remember the great mercy of God toward his people. 9 After they complain, because they feel it no more. 17 Also they allege the covenant made with Abraham, for the keeping whereof they show what grievous things they suffered. 23 Finally, they pray unto God not to contemn their affliction, seeing the same redoundeth to the contempt of his honor.
To him that excelleth. A Psalm to give instruction, committed to the sons of Korah.
1 We have heard with our [a]ears, O God: our fathers have told us the works that thou hast done in their days, in the old time:
2 How thou hast driven out the [b]heathen with thine hand, and planted [c]them: how thou hast destroyed the [d]people, and caused [e]them to grow.
3 For they inherited not the land by their own sword, neither did their own arm save them: but thy right hand, and thine arm, and the light of thy countenance, because thou didst [f]favor them.
4 Thou art my king, O God: send help unto [g]Jacob.
5 [h]Through thee have we thrust back our adversaries: by thy Name have we trodden down them that rose up against us.
6 For I do not trust in my bow, neither can my sword save me.
7 But thou hast saved us from our adversaries, and hast put them to confusion that hate us.
8 Therefore will we praise God continually, and will confess thy Name forever. Selah.
9 But now thou art far off, and puttest us to [i]confusion, and goest not forth with our armies.
10 Thou makest us to turn back from the adversary, and they which hate us, spoil [j]for themselves.
11 (A)Thou givest us [k]as sheep to be eaten, and dost scatter us among the nations.
12 Thou sellest thy people [l]without gain, and dost not increase their price.
13 Thou makest us a reproach to our neighbors, a jest and laughing stock to them that are round about us.
14 Thou makest us a proverb among the nations, and a nodding of the head among the people.
15 My [m]confusion is daily before me, and the shame of my face hath covered me,
16 For the voice of the slanderer and rebuker, for the enemy and [n]avenger.
17 All this is come upon us, yet do we not [o]forget thee, neither deal we falsely concerning thy covenant.
18 Our heart is not turned back: neither our steps gone out of thy paths,
19 Albeit thou hast smitten us down into the place of [p]dragons, and covered us with the shadow of death.
20 If we have forgotten the Name of our God, and held up our hands to a [q]strange god,
21 Shall not God [r]search this out? for he knoweth the secrets of the heart.
22 Surely for thy sake [s]are we slain continually, and are counted as sheep for the slaughter.
23 Up, why sleepest thou, O Lord? awake, be not far off forever.
24 Wherefore hidest thou thy face? and forgettest our misery and our affliction?
25 For our soul is [t]beaten down unto the dust: our belly cleaveth to the ground.
26 Rise up for our succor, and redeem us for thy [u]mercy’s sake.
