The Song of Moses

15 Then Moses and the ·Israelites [L sons/T children of Israel] sang this song to the Lord:

“I will sing to the Lord,
    because he ·is worthy of great honor [is highly exalted; has triumphed gloriously].
He has ·thrown the horse and its rider
    into the sea.
The Lord ·gives me strength and makes me sing [L is my strength and my song];
    he ·has saved me [L is my salvation].
He is my God,
    and I will praise him.
He is the God of my ·ancestors [fathers],
    and I will ·honor [exalt] him.
The Lord is a ·warrior [L man of war];
    ·the Lord [L Yahweh; 3:14–17] is his name.
The chariots and soldiers of ·the king of Egypt [L Pharaoh]
    he has ·thrown [cast] into the sea.
·The king’s [L His] ·best [handpicked; elite] officers
    are drowned in the ·Red [or Reed; 10:19] Sea.
The ·deep waters [floods] covered them,
    and they sank ·to the bottom [L into the depths] like a ·rock [stone].
Your right hand, Lord,
    is ·amazingly [gloriously] strong.
Lord, your right hand
    broke the enemy to pieces.
In your great victory
    you ·destroyed [demolished] those who ·were [L rose up] against you.
·Your anger destroyed them [L You sent out your anger],
    ·like fire burning straw [L it consumed them like chaff/stubble/straw].
Just a blast of your ·breath [or anger],
    and the waters piled up.
The moving water stood like a ·wall [or heap];

“The enemy ·bragged [L said],
    ‘I’ll ·chase them [L pursue] and ·catch them [L overtake].
I’ll ·take all their riches [L divide the plunder];
    ·I’ll take all I want [L My desire/appetite will have my fill of them].
I’ll ·pull out [draw] my sword,
    and my hand will destroy them.’
10 But you blew on them with your ·breath [or wind]
    and covered them with the sea.
They sank like lead
    in the ·raging water [mighty waters].

11 “·Are there any gods like you [L Who is like you among the gods], Lord?

·There are no gods [L Who is…?] like you.
    You are ·wonderfully holy [splendid/majestic in holiness],
    ·amazingly powerful [awesome in power],
    ·a worker of miracles [doing wonders].
12 You ·reached out with [extend; stretch out] your right hand,
    and the earth swallowed ·our enemies [L them].
13 You ·keep your loving promise
    and lead [L led by your covenant love] the people you have ·saved [L redeemed; ransomed].
With your strength you will guide them
    to your holy ·place [abode; C the Promised Land].

14 “The ·other nations [L peoples] will hear this and tremble with fear;
    ·terror [writhing; pangs] will take hold of the Philistines.
15 The ·leaders of the tribes [chiefs] of Edom will be ·very frightened [scared];
the powerful men of Moab will ·shake with fear [be seized by shaking];
the people of Canaan will ·lose all their courage [L melt].
16 Terror and horror will fall on them.
·When they see your strength [L By the power of your arm],
    they will be as still as a ·rock [stone].
They will be still until your people pass by, Lord.
    They will be still until the people you have ·taken as your own [purchased; acquired; or created] pass by.
17 You will ·lead your people [L bring them] and ·place [L plant] them
    on ·your very own mountain [L the mountain of your possession/inheritance],
the place that you, Lord, made for ·yourself to live [your abode],
    the ·temple [sanctuary], Lord, that your hands have ·made [established].
18 The Lord will ·be king [reign] forever!”

19 The horses, chariot drivers, and chariots of ·the king of Egypt [L Pharaoh] went into the sea, and the Lord ·covered them with [L returned on them the] water from the sea. But the Israelites walked through the sea on dry land. 20 Then Aaron’s sister Miriam, a prophetess, took a tambourine in her hand. All the women followed her, playing tambourines and dancing. 21 Miriam told them:

“Sing to the Lord,
    because he ·is worthy of great honor [is highly exalted; or has triumphed gloriously];
he has thrown the horse and its rider
    into the sea.”

Bitter Water Becomes Good

22 Moses led the Israelites away from the ·Red [or Reed; 10:19] Sea into the ·Desert [Wilderness] of Shur. They traveled for three days in the ·desert [wilderness] but found no water. 23 Then they came to Marah, where there was water, but they could not drink it because it was too bitter. (That is why the place was named Marah [C Hebrew for “bitter”].) 24 The people ·grumbled [complained] to Moses and asked, “What will we drink?”

25 So Moses cried out to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a ·tree [or piece of wood]. When Moses threw the ·tree [or piece of wood] into the water, the water became ·good to drink [L sweet].

There the Lord gave the people a ·rule [statute; ordinance; requirement] and a law to live by, and there he tested ·their loyalty to him [L them]. 26 He said, “You must ·obey [or listen to the voice of] the Lord your God and do what ·he says is right [L is right in his eyes/sight]. If you obey all his ·commands [statutes; ordinances; requirements] and keep his rules, I will not bring on you any of the ·sicknesses [diseases] I brought on the Egyptians. I am the Lord ·who heals you [your physician].”

27 Then the people traveled to Elim, where there were twelve springs of water and seventy palm trees. So the people camped there near the water.

Luke 18

God Will Answer His People

18 Then Jesus used this ·story [parable] to ·teach his followers [show the necessity] that they should always pray and never ·lose hope [become discouraged]. “In a certain town there was a judge who did not ·respect [fear] God or ·care about people [or care what people thought]. In that same town there was a widow [C among the most vulnerable members of society] who kept coming to this judge, saying, ‘Give me ·my rights [justice] against my ·enemy [opponent; adversary].’ For a while the judge refused to help her. But afterwards, he thought to himself, ‘Even though I don’t ·respect [fear] God or ·care about people [or care what people think], yet because she ·keeps bothering me [is causing me such trouble], I will see that she gets ·her rights [justice]. Otherwise she will ·keep coming until she wears me out [or eventually come and punch me/blacken my eye].’”

The Lord said, “Listen to what the ·unfair [unjust; unrighteous] judge said. God will always [L Will not God…?] ·give what is right [provide justice] to his ·people [L chosen people; elect] who cry to him day and night, and ·he will not [L will he…?] ·be slow to answer them [or keep putting them off]. I tell you, God will ·help [provide justice to] his people ·quickly [or suddenly]. ·But [However; Yet] when the Son of Man comes again, will he find ·those on earth who believe in him [L faith on the earth; C God’s faithfulness is certain; the only question is whether people will remain faithful to him]?”

Being Right with God

Jesus told this ·story [parable] to some people who ·thought they were very good [were confident of their own righteousness] and ·looked down on [scorned; despised] everyone else: 10 “Two men went up to the Temple [courts] to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector [C despised by their fellow Jews because they worked for the hated Romans and were notorious for extortion]. 11 The Pharisee ·stood alone and prayed [or stood and prayed about himself], ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other people—thieves, ·cheaters [evildoers; unrighteous people], adulterers—or even like this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week [C Pharisees commonly fasted on Monday and Thursday], and I ·give one-tenth of [pay tithes on] everything I get!’

13 [L But] The tax collector, standing at a distance, would not even ·look up [L raise his eyes] to heaven. But he beat on his chest [C a sign of sorrow and remorse] and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’ 14 I tell you, when this man went home, he was ·right with God [justified], ·but the Pharisee was not [L rather than that (other) man]. [L Because] All who ·make themselves great [exalt themselves] will be made humble, but all who make themselves humble will be ·made great [exalted].”

Who Will Enter God’s Kingdom?(A)

15 Some people brought even their babies to Jesus so he could touch them. When the ·followers [disciples] saw this, they ·told them to stop [scolded/rebuked them]. 16 But Jesus called for the children, saying, “Let the little children come to me. Don’t ·stop [hinder; forbid] them, because the kingdom of God belongs to people who are like these children [C meaning humble and dependent]. 17 I tell you the truth, you must ·accept [receive] the kingdom of God as if you were a child, or you will never enter it.”

A Rich Man’s Question(B)

18 A certain ·leader [ruler] asked Jesus, “Good Teacher, what must I do to ·have life forever [L inherit eternal life]?”

19 Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? ·Only God is good [L No one is good except one—God; C Jesus is not denying his own divinity, but is challenging the man’s understanding of goodness]. 20 You know the commands: ‘You must not ·be guilty of [commit] adultery. You must not murder anyone. You must not steal. You must not ·tell lies [testify falsely] about your neighbor. Honor your father and mother [Ex. 20:12–16; Deut. 5:16–20].’”

21 But the leader said, “I have ·obeyed [kept carefully; guarded] all these commands since ·I was a boy [my youth].”

22 When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “There is still one more thing you ·need to do [lack]. Sell everything you have and give it to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come and follow me.” 23 But when the man heard this, he became very sad, because he was ·very [extremely] rich.

24 ·Jesus looked at him and [or When Jesus saw this reaction, he] said, “·It is very hard [L How hard it is…!] for ·rich people [L those who have wealth] to enter the kingdom of God. 25 [L For; Indeed] It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God [C meaning it is impossible, by human effort; see v. 27].”

Who Can Be Saved?

26 When the people heard this, they asked, “Then who can be saved?”

27 Jesus answered, “The things impossible ·for people [humanly speaking] are possible for God.”

28 Peter said, “Look, we have left ·everything [or our possessions; or our home] and followed you.”

29 Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, all those who have left houses, wives, brothers [or siblings], parents, or children ·for [for the sake of] the kingdom of God 30 will get much more in this ·life [age; L time]. And in the ·age [aeon; world] that is coming, they will have ·life forever [eternal life].”

Jesus Will Rise from the Dead(C)

31 Then Jesus took ·the twelve apostles [L the Twelve] aside and said to them, “[L Look; T Behold] We are going [L up] to Jerusalem. Everything the prophets wrote about the Son of Man will ·happen [be fulfilled/completed/accomplished]. 32 He will be turned over to the Gentiles [C the Roman authorities]. They will ·laugh at [mock] him, insult him, spit on him, 33 ·beat him with whips [flog him; T scourge him], and kill him. But on the third day, he will rise to life again.” 34 ·The apostles [L They] did not understand this; the meaning was hidden from them, and they did not ·realize [comprehend] what was said.

Jesus Heals a Blind Man(D)

35 As Jesus came near the city of Jericho, a blind man was sitting beside the road, begging. 36 When he heard the people ·coming down the road [passing by], he asked, “What is happening?”

37 They told him, “Jesus, ·from Nazareth [or the Nazarene], is going by.”

38 The blind man cried out, “Jesus, Son of David [C a title for the Messiah, a descendant of King David; 2 Sam. 7:11–16], ·have mercy [take pity] on me!”

39 The people leading the group ·warned [rebuked; scolded] the blind man to be quiet. But the blind man shouted even more, “Son of David, ·have mercy [take pity] on me!”

40 Jesus stopped and ordered the blind man to be brought to him. When he came near, Jesus asked him, 41 “What do you want me to do for you?”

He said, “Lord, I want to see.”

42 Jesus said to him, “Then see. ·You are healed because you believed [Your faith has healed/saved you].”

43 At once the man was able to see, and he followed Jesus, thanking God. All the people who saw this praised God.

Job 33

33 “Now, Job, ·listen to [hear] my words.
    Pay attention to ·everything I say [L all my words].
I open my mouth
    and ·am ready to speak [L the tongue in my mouth speaks].
My words come from an ·honest [virtuous] heart,
    and ·I am sincere in saying what I know [L what my lips know they speak with sincerity].
The Spirit of God ·created [has made] me,
    and the breath of ·the Almighty [Shaddai] gave me life.
Answer me if you can;
    get yourself ready and stand before me.
I am just like you before God;
    I too ·am made [was formed] out of clay.
·Don’t be afraid of me [L Dread of me should not scare you];
    ·I will not be hard on you [L My pressure will not be too heavy on you].

“But ·I heard what you have said [L you have spoken in my ear];
    I heard ·every word [L the sound of your words].
You said, ‘I am pure and without ·sin [transgression];
    I am ·innocent [L clean] and free from guilt.
10 But God has found ·fault [reason to be upset] with me;
    he ·considers me [thinks I am] his enemy.
11 He ·locks [places] my feet in ·chains [shackles]
    and ·closely watches everywhere I go [L guards all my paths].’

12 “But I tell you, you are not ·right in saying this [L correct],
    I will answer you, for God is greater than ·we are [L any human being].
13 Why do you ·accuse [contend with] God
    ·of not answering anyone [or for no one can answer all his words]?
14 God does speak—sometimes ·one way and sometimes another [or once and sometimes twice]
    even though people may not ·understand [perceive] it.
15 He speaks in a dream or a vision of the night
    when people are in a deep sleep,
    lying on their beds in slumber.
16 He ·speaks in [L opens] their ears
    and frightens them with warnings
17 to turn them away from doing wrong
    and to keep them from being proud.
18 God does this to ·save people [L keep them] from ·death [L the Pit; C a reference to the grave and the underworld],
    to keep them from ·dying [L the water channel; C another reference to the grave and the underworld].
19 People may be ·corrected [reprimanded; reproved] while in bed in great pain;
    they may have continual pain in their very bones.
20 ·They may be in such pain that they even hate [L Their lives loathe] food,
    even ·the very best meal [choice food].
21 ·Their body becomes so thin [L Their flesh wastes away so that] ·there is almost nothing left of it [L it cannot be seen],
    and their bones that were hidden now stick out.
22 ·They are [L Their souls draw] near ·death [L the Pit; 33:18],
    and their life ·is almost over [L comes near those who bring death].

23 “·But there may be [L If there is] an angel to speak for him,
    one out of a thousand, ·who will tell him what to do [a mediator who declares a person virtuous].
24 The angel will ·beg for mercy [or be gracious to him] and say:
    ‘·Save [Redeem] him from ·death [L going down to the Pit; 33:18].
    I have found a ·way to pay for his life [ransom].’
25 Then his body is made new like a ·child’s [youth’s].
    It will return to the way it was when he was ·young [vigorous].
26 That person will pray to God, and God will ·listen to [L accept] him.
    He will see God’s face and will shout with happiness.
    And ·God will set things right for him again [or he will repeat to others that he has been vindicated].
27 Then he will ·say [L sing] to others,
    ‘I sinned and ·twisted what was right [perverted/sullied virtue],
    but I did not receive the punishment I should have received.
28 God ·bought [redeemed] my life ·back from death [L from crossing over to the Pit; 33:18],
    and ·I will continue to enjoy life [L my life will yet see the light].’

29 “God does all these things to a person
    two or even three times
30 ·so he won’t die as punishment for his sins [L to bring back his life from the Pit; 33:18]
    and so he may ·still enjoy life [L be illuminated with the light of life].

31 “Job, pay attention and listen to me;
    be quiet, and I will speak.
32 If you have anything to say, answer me;
    speak up, because I want to ·prove you right [vindicate you].
33 But if you have nothing to say, then listen to me;
    be quiet, and I will teach you wisdom.”

2 Corinthians 3

Servants of the New Agreement

Are we starting to ·brag about [praise; commend] ourselves again? Do we need letters of ·introduction [recommendation] to you or from you, like some other people [C Paul’s opponents evidently carried letters of reference (perhaps from Jerusalem)]? You yourselves are our letter, written on our hearts, known and read by everyone [C the changed lives of the Corinthians prove Paul’s credibility as an apostle of Jesus Christ]. You show that you are a letter from Christ ·sent through us [delivered by us; or produced by us; the result of our ministry]. This letter is not written with ink but ·with [by] the Spirit of the living God. It is not written on stone tablets [C the law of Moses was written on stone tablets; Ex. 24:12; 32:16] but on human hearts [L hearts of flesh; Jer. 31:33; Ezek. 11:19; 36:26].

We can say this, because through Christ we ·feel certain before God [have confidence in God’s presence; or can trust in God]. We are not saying that we ·can do this work ourselves [L are able/competent/adequate to consider anything as from ourselves]. ·It is God who makes us able to do all that we do [L But our ability/competence/adequacy is from God]. He made us ·able [adequate; competent] to be servants of a new ·agreement from himself to his people [covenant; Jer. 31:31–34; Luke 22:20]. This new ·agreement [covenant] is not ·a written law [L of the letter], but it is of the Spirit. The ·written law [L letter] brings death, but the Spirit gives life.

The ·law [or old system; L ministry] that brought death was ·written in words [L engraved with letters] on stone. It came with ·God’s glory [L glory], which made Moses’ face so ·bright [glorious] that the ·Israelites [L children of Israel] could not ·continue to look [gaze] at it. But that glory ·later disappeared [was fading; or was made ineffective (by the veil on his face)]. So ·surely [L will not…?] the ·new way that brings [L ministry of] the Spirit has even more glory. [L For] If the ·law that judged people guilty of sin [L ministry of condemnation] had glory, surely the ·new way that makes people right with God [L ministry of righteousness] has much greater glory. 10 For that which had glory [C the law] ·really loses its glory [L has no glory] when it is compared to the much greater glory [C the new way through the Spirit]. 11 [L For] If that which ·disappeared [faded; was made ineffective; C the law; v. 7] came with glory, then that which ·continues forever [remains; abides; C the new way through the Spirit] has much greater glory.

12 We have this hope, so we ·are very bold [or speak with boldness/confidence]. 13 We are not like Moses, who put a ·covering [veil] over his face so the ·Israelites [L children of Israel] would not see it [Ex. 34:29–35]. The glory was ·disappearing [fading; or made ineffective], and Moses did not want them to see it end. 14 But their minds were ·closed [stubborn; hardened], and even today that same ·covering [veil] ·hides the meaning [L remains] when they read the old ·agreement [covenant]. That covering is ·taken away [L not lifted, because it is removed] only through Christ. 15 Even today, when they read ·the law of Moses [L Moses], there is a ·covering over [L veil laying upon] their ·minds [hearts]. 16 But when a person ·changes and follows [L turns to] the Lord, that ·covering [veil] is taken away [Ex. 34:34]. 17 The Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. 18 ·Our faces, then, are not covered [L With an unveiled face…]. We all ·show [reflect; or behold; or contemplate] the Lord’s glory, and we are being ·changed [transformed] ·to be like him [L into the same image]. This change in us ·brings ever greater glory [or is from one degree of glory to another; L is from glory to glory], which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.
