M’Cheyne Bible Reading Plan
Tola
10 After Abimelech died, Tola the son of Puah, son of Dodo, a man of Issachar, came to save Israel. He lived in Shamir in the hill country of Ephraim. 2 He judged Israel for twenty-three years. Then he died and was buried in Shamir.
Jair
3 Jair the Gileadite came after him. He judged Israel for twenty-two years. 4 He had thirty sons who traveled on thirty donkeys. They had thirty cities in the land of Gilead that are called the towns of Jair to this day. 5 Jair died and was buried in Kamon.
Jephthah
6 Then the people of Israel sinned in the eyes of the Lord. They served the male and female gods of Canaan, and the gods of Syria, Sidon, Moab, the Ammonites and of the Philistines. They turned away from the Lord and did not serve Him. 7 The anger of the Lord was against Israel. So He sold them into the hands of the Philistines and the people of Ammon. 8 They made it very hard for the people of Israel that year. For eighteen years they made it very hard for all the people of Israel in Gilead in the land of the Amorites on the other side of the Jordan. 9 And the sons of Ammon crossed the Jordan to fight against Judah, Benjamin and the family of Ephraim. So Israel suffered much pain.
10 The people of Israel cried out to the Lord, saying, “We have sinned against You. We have turned away from our God and are serving the Baals.” 11 The Lord said to the people of Israel, “Did I not save you from the Egyptians, the Amorites, the people of Ammon and the Philistines? 12 When the Sidonians and Amalekites and Maonites made it hard for you, you cried out to Me. And I took you away from their hands. 13 Yet you have turned away from Me and served other gods. So I will not take you away again. 14 Go and cry out to the gods you have chosen. Let them save you in the time of your trouble.” 15 The people of Israel said to the Lord, “We have sinned. Do to us whatever You think is good. But we beg of You, take us out of this today.” 16 So they put away the strange gods from among them, and served the Lord. And the Lord cared as He saw the suffering of Israel.
17 The men of Ammon were gathered together for war. They set up their tents in Gilead. The men of Israel gathered together, and set up their tents in Mizpah. 18 The leaders of Gilead said to one another, “Who is the man who will be first to fight against the men of Ammon? He will be the head of all the people of Gilead.”
11 Now Jephthah the Gileadite was a powerful soldier. But he was the son of a woman who sold the use of her body. Jephthah’s father was Gilead. 2 Gilead’s wife gave birth to his sons. And when his wife’s sons grew up, they drove Jephthah away. They told him, “You will not have any share in our father’s house. For you are the son of another woman.” 3 So Jephthah ran away from his brothers and lived in the land of Tob. Men of no worth gathered around Jephthah and went fighting and stealing with him.
4 The time came when the men of Ammon fought against Israel. 5 When the men of Ammon fought against Israel, the leaders of Gilead went to get Jephthah from the land of Tob. 6 They said to Jephthah, “Come and be our leader, so we may fight against the men of Ammon.” 7 Jephthah said to the leaders of Gilead, “Did you not hate me and drive me from my father’s house? Why have you come to me now when you are in trouble?” 8 The leaders of Gilead said to Jephthah, “That is why we have returned to you now. So you may go with us and fight the men of Ammon. You will be the head of all the people of Gilead.” 9 Jephthah said to the leaders of Gilead, “If you bring me home again to fight the men of Ammon and the Lord gives them to me, will I become your head?” 10 The leaders of Gilead said to Jephthah, “The Lord is listening to what we say. For sure we will do as you have said.” 11 So Jephthah went with the leaders of Gilead. And the people made him head and leader over them. Jephthah spoke all his words before the Lord at Mizpah.
Paul and Barnabas Preach in Iconium
14 In the city of Iconium, Paul and Barnabas went into the Jewish place of worship. They preached with power and many people became Christians. These people were Jews and Greeks. 2 But the Jews who did not want to believe worked against those who were not Jews. They made them turn against the Christians. 3 Paul and Barnabas stayed there a long time preaching with the strength the Lord gave. God helped them to do powerful works when they preached which showed He was with them. 4 The people of the city were divided. Some were on the side of the Jews. Some were on the side of the missionaries. 5 All the people and the leaders tried to hurt them and throw stones at them.
Paul and Barnabas Go to Lystra
6 When Paul and Barnabas heard this, they got away and went to the cities of Lystra and Derbe in Lycaonia and to the country close by. 7 They stayed there and kept on preaching the Good News. 8 There was a man in Lystra who had never walked from the time he was born. 9 This man listened as Paul spoke. Paul watched him. He saw that the man believed he could be healed. 10 Calling to him with a loud voice, Paul said, “Stand up on your feet!” The man jumped up and walked around.
Paul and Barnabas Are Called Gods, Then Stoned
11 The people saw what Paul did. They called with loud voices in the language of the people of Lycaonia, “The gods have become like men and have come down to us.” 12 They said that Barnabas was Jupiter. Paul was called Mercury because he spoke more than Barnabas. 13 The god of Jupiter was in a building near the gate leading into the city. The religious leader of that place brought cattle and flowers to the gate. He and many other people wanted to burn these as gifts in an act of worship to Paul and Barnabas.
14 When Paul and Barnabas heard this, they ran among the people. They tore their clothes and cried out, 15 “Why are you doing this? We are only men with feelings like yours. We preach the Good News that you should turn from these empty things to the living God. He made the heavens and the earth and the sea and everything in them. 16 Long ago He allowed all people to live the way they wanted to. 17 Even then God did not leave you without something to see of Him. He did good. He gave you rain from heaven and much food. He made you happy.” 18 Even with these words it was hard for Paul and Barnabas to keep the people from burning cattle in an act of worship to them.
19 By this time some Jews from the cities of Antioch and Iconium came. They turned the minds of the people against Paul and Barnabas and told them to throw stones at Paul. After they threw stones at him, they dragged him out of the city thinking he was dead.
Paul and Barnabas Preach to the Christians on Their Return Trip to Antioch
20 As the Christians gathered around Paul, he got up and went back into the city. The next day he went with Barnabas to Derbe. 21 In that city they preached the Good News and taught many people. Then they returned to the cities of Lystra and Iconium and Antioch. 22 In each city they helped the Christians to be strong and true to the faith. They told them, “We must suffer many hard things to get into the holy nation of God.”
23 In every church they chose leaders for them. They went without food during that time so they could pray better. Paul and Barnabas prayed for the leaders, giving them over to the Lord in Whom they believed.
24 When they had gone through the city of Pisidia, they came to the city of Pamphylia. 25 Then they preached the Good News in the city of Perga. After this they went down to the city of Attalia. 26 From there they went by ship to Antioch where they had been given to the Lord for His work. The work of this trip was done.
27 When they got there, they called the church together. They told them everything God had done for them. They told how God had opened the door for the people who were not Jews to have faith. 28 They stayed there with the followers a long time.
The Right and Good Branch
23 “It is bad for the shepherds who are destroying and dividing the sheep of My field!” says the Lord. 2 The Lord God of Israel says this about the shepherds who are caring for My people, “You have made My flock go everywhere and have driven them away, and have not cared for them. See, I am about to punish you for your sinful things you have done,” says the Lord. 3 “Then I Myself will gather those who are left of My flock out of all the countries where I have driven them, and will bring them back to their field. And they will have many children. 4 I will have shepherds over them who will care for them. And they will not be afraid any longer, or filled with fear, and none of them will be missing,” says the Lord.
5 “See, the days are coming,” says the Lord, “when I will raise up for David a right and good Branch. He will rule as king and be wise and do what is right and fair and good in the land. 6 In His days Judah will be saved, and Israel will be safe. And this is the name He will be called by: ‘The Lord Who makes us right and good.’ 7 So see, the days are coming,” says the Lord, “when they will no longer say, ‘As the Lord lives, Who brought the sons of Israel up from the land of Egypt.’ 8 But they will say, ‘As the Lord lives, Who brought up and led the children of the people of Israel back from the north country and from all the countries where He had driven them.’ Then they will live in their own land.”
False Preachers and Empty Words
9 As for the men who speak for God, my heart is broken within me. All my bones shake. I have become like a drunk man, like a man who has had too much wine, because of the Lord and because of His holy words. 10 For the land is full of people who are not faithful. Because of the bad things that have come upon it, the land is filled with sorrow, and the fields of the desert have dried up. Their way is sinful, and they use their power in a wrong way. 11 “For both the men of God and the religious leaders are sinful. I have found their sin even in My house,” says the Lord. 12 “So their way will be a danger to them. They will be driven away into the darkness and fall down in it. For I will bring much trouble upon them in the year of their punishment,” says the Lord.
13 “In Samaria I have seen a very bad thing among the men of Samaria who tell what is going to happen in the future. They speak for the false god Baal, and have led My people into sin. 14 In Jerusalem I have seen a very sinful thing among the men of Jerusalem who tell what is going to happen in the future. They do sex sins and tell lies, and give help to those who do sinful things, so that no one turns from his sin. All of them have become like Sodom to Me. The people of Jerusalem have become like Gomorrah.” 15 So the Lord of All says about the men who tell what is going to happen in the future, “See, I will make them eat bitter food and drink water with poison. For from these men of Jerusalem sin has gone out into all the land.”
16 The Lord of All says, “Do not listen to the words of those who are telling you what will happen in the future. They are filling you with empty hopes. They tell of dreams from their own thoughts, not from the mouth of the Lord. 17 They keep saying to those who hate Me, ‘The Lord has said, “You will have peace.”’ To every one who walks in the strong-will of his own heart, they say, ‘Trouble will not come to you.’ 18 But who among them has listened to the Lord, that he should see and hear His Word? Who has given thought to His Word and listened? 19 See, the strong wind storm of the Lord has gone out in anger. It will come down upon the head of the sinful. 20 The anger of the Lord will not turn back until He has done all that He has planned in His heart. In the last days you will understand. 21 I did not send these men who say they speak for God, yet they ran to tell their news. I did not speak to them, yet they spoke in My name. 22 But if they had listened to Me, then they would have made My words known to My people. And they would have turned them back from their sinful way and from the sinful things they did.”
23 “Am I a God Who is near,” says the Lord, “and not a God Who is far away? 24 Can a man hide himself in secret places so that I cannot see him?” says the Lord. “Do I not fill heaven and earth?” says the Lord.
25 “I have heard what the men say who speak false words in My name. They say, ‘I had a dream, I had a dream!’ 26 How long will there be lies in the hearts of those who speak false words in My name, who speak the lies of their own heart? 27 They plan to make My people forget My name by their dreams which they tell one another, just as their fathers forgot My name because of Baal. 28 The one who has a dream may tell about his dream, but let him who has My Word speak My Word in truth. How can straw be compared with grain?” says the Lord. 29 “Is not My Word like fire,” says the Lord, “and like iron that breaks a rock in pieces? 30 So I am against those who tell what is going to happen in the future,” says the Lord, “who steal My words from each other. 31 See, I am against these men,” says the Lord, “who use their tongues and say, ‘This is what the Lord says.’ 32 I am against those who have told false dreams,” says the Lord, “and have led My people the wrong way by their lies and foolish words of pride. I did not send them or tell them what to say, so they do not help these people at all,” says the Lord.
33 “When these people, or the one who speaks in My name, or a religious leader asks you, ‘What heavy load has the Lord placed on us?’ then you say to them, ‘You are the heavy load. And I will throw you off, says the Lord.’ 34 As for the man who speaks in My name, or the religious leader, or anyone of the people, who say, ‘The heavy load of the Lord,’ I will punish that man and those of his house. 35 Each of you say to his neighbor and to his brother, ‘What has the Lord answered?’ or, ‘What has the Lord said?’ 36 But you must not say, ‘The heavy load of the Lord,’ any more. For every man’s own word will be the weight upon himself. And you have made sinful the words of the living God, the Lord of All, our God. 37 This is what you should say to the man who speaks in My name: ‘What answer has the Lord given you?’ and, ‘What has the Lord said?’ 38 But if you say, ‘The heavy load of the Lord,’ then the Lord says, ‘You have said, “The heavy load of the Lord,” when I told you not to say it.’ 39 So I will pick you up and throw you away from Me, together with the city which I gave to you and your fathers. 40 I will put you to shame forever. You will always be ashamed, and it will not be forgotten.”
A Look at What Jesus Will Be Like (A)
9 Jesus said to them, “For sure I tell you, some standing here will not die until they see the holy nation of God come with power!”
2 Six days later Jesus took Peter and James and John with Him. He led them up to a high mountain by themselves. Jesus was changed as they looked at Him. 3 His clothes did shine. They were as white as snow. No one on earth could clean them so white. 4 Moses and Elijah were seen talking to Jesus.
5 Peter said to Jesus, “Teacher, it is good for us to be here. Let us make three tents to worship in. One will be for You and one for Moses and one for Elijah.” 6 Peter did not know what to say. They were very much afraid.
7 A cloud came over them and a voice from the cloud said, “This is My much-loved Son. Listen to Him.” 8 At once they looked around but saw no one there but Jesus.
9 They came down from the mountain. Then Jesus said with strong words that they should tell no one what they had seen. They should wait until the Son of Man had risen from the dead. 10 So they kept those words to themselves, talking to each other about what He meant by being raised from the dead.
11 They asked Jesus, “Why do the teachers of the Law say that Elijah must come first?” 12 He said to them, “For sure, Elijah will come first and get things ready. Is it not written that the Son of Man must suffer many things and that men will have nothing to do with Him? (B) 13 But I say to you, Elijah has already come. They did to him whatever they wanted to do. It is written that they would.”
A Boy with a Demon Is Healed (C)
14 When Jesus came back to His followers, He saw many people standing around them. The teachers of the Law were arguing with them. 15 The people saw Jesus and were surprised and ran to greet Him. 16 Jesus asked the teachers of the Law, “What are you arguing about with them?” 17 One of the people said, “Teacher, I brought my son to You. He has a demon in him and cannot talk. 18 Wherever the demon takes him, it throws him down. Spit runs from his mouth. He grinds his teeth. He is getting weaker. I asked Your followers to put the demon out but they could not.”
19 He said, “You people of this day have no faith. How long must I be with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring the boy to Me.” 20 They brought the boy to Jesus. The demon saw Jesus and at once held the boy in his power. The boy fell to the ground with spit running from his mouth. 21 Jesus asked the boy’s father, “How long has he been like this?” The father said, “From the time he was a child. 22 Many times it throws him into the fire and into the water to kill him. If You can do anything to help us, take pity on us!” 23 Jesus said to him, “Why do you ask Me that? The one who has faith can do all things.” 24 At once the father cried out. He said with tears in his eyes, “Lord, I have faith. Help my weak faith to be stronger!” 25 Jesus saw that many people were gathering together in a hurry. He spoke sharp words to the demon. He said, “Demon! You who cannot speak or hear, I say to you, come out of him! Do not ever go into him again.” 26 The demon gave a cry. It threw the boy down and came out of him. The boy was so much like a dead man that people said, “He is dead!” 27 But Jesus took him by the hand and helped him and he stood up.
28 When Jesus went into the house, His followers asked Him when He was alone, “Why could we not put out the demon?” 29 He said to them, “The only way this kind of demon is put out is by prayer and by going without food so you can pray better.”
Jesus Tells of His Death the Second Time (D)
30 From there Jesus and His followers went through the country of Galilee. He did not want anyone to know where He was. 31 He taught His followers, saying, “The Son of Man will be handed over to men. They will kill Him. Three days after He is killed, He will be raised from the dead.” 32 They did not understand what He said and were afraid to ask Him.
Jesus Teaches about the Faith of a Child (E)
33 They came to the city of Capernaum and were in the house. Jesus asked His followers, “What were you arguing about along the road?” 34 They did not answer. They had been arguing along the road about who was the greatest. 35 Jesus sat down and called the followers to Him. He said, “If anyone wants to be first, he must be last of all. He will be the one to care for all.”
36 Jesus took a child and stood it among them. Then He took the child up in His arms and said to the followers, 37 “Whoever receives one of these little children in My name, receives Me. Whoever will receive Me, receives not Me, but Him Who sent Me.”
Jesus Speaks Sharp Words against the Followers
38 John said to Him, “Teacher, we saw someone putting out demons in Your name. We told him to stop because he was not following us.” 39 Jesus said, “Do not stop him. No one who does a powerful work in My name can say anything bad about Me soon after. 40 The person who is not against us is for us. 41 For sure, I tell you, whoever gives you a cup of water to drink in My name because you belong to Christ will not lose his reward from God. 42 Whoever is the reason for one of these little ones who believes in Me to sin, it would be better for him to have a large stone put around his neck and to be thrown into the sea. 43 If your hand is the reason you fall into sin, cut it off. It is better to go into life without a hand, than to have two hands and go into the fire of hell that cannot be put out. 44 *There is where their worm never dies and the fire cannot be put out. 45 If your foot is the reason you fall into sin, cut it off. It is better to go into life with only one foot, than to have two feet and go into the fire of hell that cannot be put out. 46 *There is where their worm never dies and the fire cannot be put out. 47 If your eye is the reason you fall into sin, take it out. It is better to go into the holy nation of God with only one eye, than to have two eyes and be thrown into the fire of hell. 48 There is where their worm never dies and the fire is never put out.
49 “Everyone will be made cleaner and stronger with fire. 50 Salt is good. But if salt loses its taste, how can it be made to taste like salt again? Have salt in yourselves and be at peace with each other.”
