M’Cheyne Bible Reading Plan
16 The share of land for the people of Joseph went from the Jordan at Jericho, east of the waters of Jericho, into the desert. It went from Jericho through the hill country to Bethel. 2 It went from Bethel to Luz, and on to the land of the Archites at Ataroth. 3 Then it went west to the land of the Japhletites, as far as the land of lower Beth-horon, and to Gezer. It ended at the sea.
4 The people of Joseph, Manasseh and Ephraim received their land.
5 The land of the people of Ephraim by their families on the east side was Ataroth-addar, as far as upper Bethhoron. 6 Then the side of the land went toward the sea, with Michmethath on the north, and turned east to Taanath-shiloh, and on to the east side of Janoah. 7 From Janoah it went down to Ataroth, to Naarah, touched Jericho, and ended at the Jordan. 8 From Tappuah it went west to the river of Kanah and ended at the sea. This is the land given to the family group of the people of Ephraim for their families. 9 And there are the cities which were set apart for the people of Ephraim within the land that was given to the people of Manasseh, all the cities with the towns around them. 10 But they did not drive out the Canaanites who lived in Gezer. So the Canaanites live among Ephraim to this day. But they have been made to work for the people of Ephraim.
17 This was the share of land given to the family of Manasseh, the first-born of Joseph. Gilead and Bashan were given to Machir, the firstborn of Manasseh, the father of Gilead, because he was a man of war. 2 And land was given to the rest of the sons of Manasseh for their families. The sons of Joseph’s son Manasseh, with their families, were Abiezer, Helek, Asriel, Shechem, Hepher, and Shemida. 3 But Zelophehad, the son of Hepher, son of Gilead, son of Machir, son of Manasseh, had no sons, only daughters. The names of his daughters were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. 4 They came to Eleazar the religious leader, Joshua the son of Nun, and the leaders, saying, “The Lord told Moses to give us a share of land among our brothers.” So they gave them a share of land among their father’s brothers, as the Lord had said. 5 Ten parts of the land were given to Manasseh, besides the land of Gilead and Bashan on the other side of the Jordan; 6 because Manasseh’s daughters received a share of land among his sons. The land of Gilead belonged to the rest of the sons of Manasseh.
7 The side of the land of Manasseh went from Asher to Michmethath, east of Shechem. Then it went south to the people of En-tappuah. 8 The land of Tappuah belonged to Manasseh. But the town of Tappuah on the side of Manasseh’s land belonged to the sons of Ephraim. 9 Then the side of the land went down to the river of Kanah. The cities south of the river, among the cities of Manasseh, belonged to Ephraim. Then Manasseh’s land went along the north side of the river and ended at the sea. 10 The south side belonged to Ephraim. The north side belonged to Manasseh. Their land spread from the sea to Asher on the north and to Issachar on the east. 11 In Issachar and in Asher, Manasseh had Beth-shean and its towns, Ibleam and its towns, the people of Dor and its towns, the people of En-dor and its towns, the people of Taanach and its towns, and the people of Megiddo and its towns. The third city is Napheth. 12 But the sons of Manasseh could not take these cities for their own because the Canaanites would not leave that land. 13 When the people of Israel became strong, they made the Canaanites work for them. But they did not drive all of them out.
14 The sons of Joseph said to Joshua, “Why have you given us only one share of the land? We have many people. And the Lord has brought good to us until now.” 15 Joshua said to them, “If you have many people, go up among the trees and clear a place for yourselves in the land of the Perizzites and the Rephaim, since the hill country of Ephraim is too narrow for you.” 16 The sons of Joseph said, “The hill country is not enough for us. But all the Canaanites who live in the valley have iron war-wagons. Both those in Beth-shean and its towns and those in the valley of Jezreel have them.” 17 Then Joshua said to the families of Joseph, to Ephraim and Manasseh, “You have many people and much power. You will not have only one share of land. 18 The hill country will be yours. It is full of trees, but you will clear it. All of it will be yours. For you will drive out the Canaanites, even if they have iron war-wagons and much strength.”
The Whole World Should Praise the Lord
148 Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord from the heavens! Praise Him on high! 2 Praise Him, all His angels! Praise Him, all His army! 3 Praise Him, sun and moon! Praise Him, all you shining stars! 4 Praise Him, you highest heavens, and you waters above the heavens! 5 Let them praise the name of the Lord! For He spoke and they came into being. 6 He has made them last forever and ever. He has set a Law which will not pass away.
7 Praise the Lord from the earth, you large sea animals and all seas, 8 fire and hail, snow and clouds, and wind storms, obeying His Word. 9 Praise the Lord, you mountains and all hills, fruit trees and all tall trees, 10 wild animals and all cattle, small animals that move on the ground and birds that fly, 11 kings of the earth and all people, princes and all leaders of the earth, 12 both young men and women who have never had men, and old men and children.
13 Let them praise the name of the Lord. For His name alone is honored. His shining-greatness is above earth and heaven. 14 He has raised up a horn for His people, praise for all who belong to Him, for the people of Israel, who are near to Him. Praise the Lord!
8 “At that time,” says the Lord, “they will bring out the bones of the kings and leaders of Judah, the bones of the religious leaders, the bones of the men of God, and the bones of the people of Jerusalem from their graves. 2 And they will spread them out to the sun, the moon, and to all the stars of heaven. For these they have loved, and served, and followed, and looked for, and worshiped. The bones will not be gathered or buried. They will be as animal waste on top of the ground. 3 And death will be chosen instead of life by all those who are left of this sinful family in all the places where I have driven them,” says the Lord of All.
Sin and Its Punishment
4 “You will say to them, ‘This is what the Lord says: “Do men fall and not get up again? Does one turn away and not return? 5 Why then have the people of Jerusalem always turned away from Me? They hold on to what is false, and will not return. 6 I have listened and heard, but they have not said what is right. No man turned from his sinful way, saying, ‘What have I done?’ Every one turns to his own way like a horse running into battle. 7 Even the stork in the sky knows her times. And the turtle-dove, crane, and swallow keep the time of their coming. But My people do not know the Law of the Lord.
8 “How can you say, ‘We are wise, and the Law of the Lord is with us’? See, the lying hand of the writers has made it into a lie. 9 The wise men are put to shame. They are troubled and taken. See, they have turned away from the Word of the Lord, and what kind of wisdom do they have? 10 So I will give their wives to others, and their fields to new owners. Because from the least to the greatest, every one is always wanting much. From the man of God to the religious leader, no one can be trusted in what he does. 11 They have healed the hurt of My people very little, saying, ‘Peace, peace,’ when there is no peace. 12 Were they ashamed because of the hated sin they had done? They were not ashamed at all. They did not even know how to turn red. So they will fall among those who fall. When I punish them, they will be put down,” says the Lord.
13 “For sure I will take them away,” says the Lord. “There will be no grapes on the vine, and no figs on the fig tree, and the leaves will dry up. What I have given them will pass away.” 14 Why are we sitting here? Gather together, and let us go into the strong cities and die there. For the Lord our God has given us up to die. He has given us poison in our water to drink, for we have sinned against Him. 15 We waited for peace, but no good came. We waited for a time of healing, but see, there is much trouble. 16 The noise of his horses is heard from Dan. The whole land shakes at the sound of his war horses. For they come and destroy the land and everything that is in it, the city and those who live in it. 17 “For see, I am sending the worst of snakes against you, poison snakes which cannot be stopped. And they will bite you,” says the Lord.
18 My sorrow is too much to heal. My heart is weak within me. 19 Listen! It is the cry of my people from a far away land: “Is the Lord not in Zion? Is her King not in her?” “Why have they made Me angry with their objects of worship, and with strange gods?” 20 “Gathering time is past, summer is ended, and we are not saved.” 21 I am hurt because my people are hurt. I am filled with sorrow, and fear has taken hold of me. 22 Is there no healing oil in Gilead? Is there no doctor there? Why then have my people not been healed?
The Picture-Story of the Marriage Supper
22 Again Jesus spoke to them in picture-stories. He said, 2 “The holy nation of heaven is like a king who gave a wedding supper for his son. 3 He sent his servants to tell the people, who had been asked, to come to the supper. But the people did not want to come.
4 “He sent other servants, saying to them, ‘Tell those who have been asked to come, “See! My supper is ready. My cows and fat calves are killed. Everything is ready. Come to the wedding supper!”’ 5 But they did not listen and went on working. One went to his farm. Another went to his store. 6 The others took hold of his servants, and hurt them and killed them.
7 “When the king heard this, he was very angry. He sent his soldiers to put those to death who had killed his servants. He burned their city. 8 Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding supper is ready. Those who were asked to come to the supper were not good enough. 9 Go out into the roads and as many people as you can find, ask them to come to the wedding supper.’
10 “The servants went out into the roads and brought all they could find, both bad and good. The wedding supper room was full of people. 11 The king came in to see those who had come. He saw one man who did not have on wedding supper clothes. 12 He said to him, ‘Friend, how did you get in here without wedding supper clothes?’ The man could not speak! 13 Then the king said to his servants, ‘Tie his hands and feet, and throw him out into the darkness. In that place there will be loud crying and grinding of teeth.’ 14 For many are called but few are chosen.”
The Proud Religious Law-Keepers Try to Trap Jesus (A)
15 Then the proud religious law-keepers got together to think how they could trap Jesus in His talk. 16 They sent their followers to Jesus with some of King Herod’s men. They asked, “Teacher, we know that You are true. We know that You are teaching the truth about God. We know You are not afraid of what men think or say about You. 17 Tell us what You think of this. Is it right to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?” 18 Jesus knew their sinful thoughts and said, “You pretend to be someone you are not! Why do you try to trap Me? 19 Show Me a piece of money.” They brought Him a piece. 20 Jesus said to them, “Whose picture is this? Whose name is on it?” 21 They said to Him, “Caesar’s.” Then He said to them, “Pay to Caesar the things that belong to Caesar. Pay to God the things that belong to God.” 22 When they heard this, they were surprised and wondered about it. Then they went away from Him.
They Ask about Being Raised from the Dead (B)
23 The same day some people from the religious group who believe no one will be raised from the dead came to Jesus. They asked, 24 “Teacher, Moses said, ‘If a man should die without having children, then his brother must marry his wife. He should have children for his brother.’ (C) 25 There were seven brothers with us. The first was married but died before he had any children. The second brother then married the first brother’s wife. 26 The second brother died and the same with the third and on to the seventh. 27 Then the woman died also. 28 When people are raised from the dead, whose wife will she be of the seven? They all had her for a wife.”
29 Jesus said to them, “You are wrong because you do not know the Holy Writings or the power of God. 30 After people are raised from the dead, they do not marry. They are like the angels in heaven. 31 Have you not read what God said to you about those who are raised from the dead? He said, 32 ‘I am the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.’ He is not the God of the dead but of the living!” (D) 33 When the people heard this, they were surprised and wondered about His teaching.
The Great Law (E)
34 The proud religious law-keepers got together when they heard that the religious group of people who believe no one will be raised from the dead were not able to talk anymore to Jesus. 35 A proud religious law-keeper who knew the Law tried to trap Jesus. He said, 36 “Teacher, which one is the greatest of the Laws?” 37 Jesus said to him, “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and greatest of the Laws. 39 The second is like it, ‘You must love your neighbor as you love yourself.’ 40 All the Laws and the writings of the early preachers depend on these two most important Laws.”
41 The proud religious law-keepers were gathered together. Then Jesus asked, 42 “What do you think about the Christ? Whose Son is He?” They said to Him, “The Son of David.” 43 Jesus said to them, “Then how is it that David, being led by the Holy Spirit, calls Him ‘Lord’? He said, 44 ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at My right side until I make those who hate You a place to rest Your feet.”’ (F) 45 If David calls Him ‘Lord,’ then how can He be the Son of David?” 46 No one could answer a word, and after that day no one asked Him anything.
