Deuteronomy 31

Be Strong and Courageous

31 So Moses went and spoke these words to all Israel. And he said to them, “I am (A)120 years old today; (B)I am no longer able to come and go, and Yahweh has said to me, ‘(C)You shall not cross this Jordan.’ (D)It is Yahweh your God who will cross ahead of you; He will destroy these nations before you, and you shall dispossess them. (E)Joshua is the one who will cross ahead of you, just as Yahweh has spoken. And Yahweh will do to them just as He did to Sihon and Og, the kings of the Amorites, and to their land, when He destroyed them. (F)And Yahweh will give them over before you, and you shall do to them according to all the commandments which I have commanded you. (G)Be strong and courageous. (H)Do not be afraid or be in dread of them, for (I)Yahweh your God is the one who goes with you. (J)He will not fail you or forsake you.”

Then Moses called to Joshua and said to him in the sight of all Israel, “(K)Be strong and courageous, for you shall go with this people into the land which Yahweh has sworn to their fathers to give them, and you shall give it to them as an inheritance. (L)And Yahweh is the one who goes ahead of you; He will be with you. (M)He will not fail you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.”

So Moses wrote this law and gave it to the priests, the sons of Levi (N)who carried the ark of the covenant of Yahweh, and to all the elders of Israel. 10 Then Moses commanded them, saying, “At the end of every seven years, at the time of (O)the year of the remission of debts, at the (P)Feast of Booths, 11 when all Israel comes (Q)to appear before Yahweh your God at (R)the place which He will choose, (S)you shall read this law in front of all Israel in their hearing. 12 Assemble the people, the men and the women and little ones and [a]the sojourner who is within your gates, so that they may hear and so that they may (T)learn and fear Yahweh your God and be careful to do all the words of this law. 13 And their children, who have not known, will hear and learn to fear Yahweh your God, all the days you live on the land [b]which you are about to cross the Jordan to [c]possess.”

Yahweh Has Moses Write a Song

14 Then Yahweh said to Moses, “Behold, [d](U)the time for you to die is near; call Joshua and present yourselves at the tent of meeting, that I may commission him.” (V)So Moses and Joshua went and presented themselves at the tent of meeting. 15 (W)And Yahweh appeared in the tent in a pillar of cloud, and the pillar of cloud stood at the doorway of the tent. 16 And Yahweh said to Moses, “Behold, (X)you are about to lie down with your fathers; and (Y)this people will arise and play the harlot with the foreign gods of the land, into the midst of which they are going, and they (Z)will forsake Me and break My covenant which I have cut with them. 17 (AA)Then My anger will be kindled against them in that day, and (AB)I will forsake them and (AC)hide My face from them, and they will be consumed, and many evils and troubles will find them, so that they will say in that day, ‘(AD)Is it not because our God is not among us that these evils have found us?’ 18 But I will surely hide My face in that day because of all the evil which they will do, for they will turn to other gods.

19 “So now, (AE)write this song for yourselves and teach it to the sons of Israel; put it in their mouths, so that this song may be a witness for Me against the sons of Israel. 20 (AF)For when I bring them into the land flowing with milk and honey, which I swore to their fathers, and they have eaten and are satisfied and (AG)become fat, then they will turn to other gods and serve them and spurn Me and break My covenant. 21 Then it will be, (AH)when many evils and troubles have found them, that this song will answer them as a witness (for it shall not be forgotten from the mouths of their seed); for (AI)I know their intent which they are [e]developing today, before I have brought them into the land which I swore.” 22 (AJ)So Moses wrote this song the same day and taught it to the sons of Israel.

Joshua Is Commissioned

23 (AK)Then He commissioned Joshua the son of Nun and said, “(AL)Be strong and courageous, for you shall bring the sons of Israel into the land which I swore to them, and (AM)I will be with you.”

24 And it happened, when Moses finished writing the words of this law in a book until they were complete, 25 that Moses commanded the Levites (AN)who carried the ark of the covenant of Yahweh, saying, 26 “Take this book of the law and place it beside the ark of the covenant of Yahweh your God, that it may be there as a witness against you. 27 For I know (AO)your rebellion and (AP)your [f]stiff-neck; behold, while I am still alive with you today, you have been rebellious against Yahweh; how much more, then, after my death? 28 Assemble to me all the elders of your tribes and your officers, that I may speak these words in their hearing and (AQ)call the heavens and the earth to witness against them. 29 For I know that after my death you will (AR)act corruptly and turn away from the way which I have commanded you; and evil will befall you in the last days, for you will do that which is evil in the sight of Yahweh, provoking Him to anger with the work of your hands.”

The Song of Moses

30 Then Moses spoke in the hearing of all the assembly of Israel the words of this song, until they were complete:

Psalm 119:97-120

Mem

97 Oh how I (A)love Your law!
It is my (B)meditation all the day.
98 Your (C)commandments make me wiser than my enemies,
For they are [a]mine forever.
99 I have more insight than all my teachers,
For Your testimonies are my (D)meditation.
100 I perceive (E)more than the aged,
Because I have (F)observed Your precepts.
101 I have (G)restrained my feet from every evil way,
That I may keep Your word.
102 I have not (H)turned aside from Your judgments,
For You Yourself have taught me.
103 How (I)sweet is Your [b]word to my [c]taste!
Sweeter than honey to my mouth!
104 From Your precepts I (J)get perception;
Therefore I (K)hate every false way.

Nun

105 Your word is a (L)lamp to my feet
And a light to my path.
106 I have (M)sworn and I have confirmed,
To keep Your righteous judgments.
107 I am exceedingly (N)afflicted;
O Yahweh, [d](O)revive me according to Your word.
108 Oh be pleased with the (P)freewill offerings of my mouth, O Yahweh,
And (Q)teach me Your judgments.
109 My (R)soul is continually [e]in my hand,
Yet I do not (S)forget Your law.
110 The wicked have (T)laid a snare for me,
Yet I have not (U)wandered from Your precepts.
111 I have (V)inherited Your testimonies forever,
For they are the (W)joy of my heart.
112 I have (X)inclined my heart to do Your statutes
Forever, (Y)to the end.

Samekh

113 I hate those who are (Z)double-minded,
But I love Your (AA)law.
114 You are my (AB)hiding place and my (AC)shield;
I [f](AD)wait for Your word.
115 (AE)Depart from me, evildoers,
That I may (AF)observe the commandments of my God.
116 (AG)Sustain me according to Your [g]word, that I may live;
And (AH)do not put me to shame because of my hope.
117 Uphold me that I may be (AI)saved,
That I may (AJ)have regard for Your statutes continually.
118 You have [h]rejected all those (AK)who stray from Your statutes,
For their deceitfulness is a lie.
119 You [i]remove all the wicked of the earth like (AL)dross;
Therefore I (AM)love Your testimonies.
120 My flesh [j](AN)quakes for dread of You,
And I am (AO)afraid of Your judgments.

Isaiah 58

Fasting as Yahweh Chooses

58 (A)Call out from your throat, do not hold back;
Raise your voice like a trumpet,
And declare to My people their (B)transgression
And to the house of Jacob their sins.
Yet they (C)seek Me day by day and find pleasure in knowing My ways,
As a nation that has done (D)righteousness
And (E)has not forsaken the judgment of their God.
They ask Me for righteous judgments;
They find pleasure in (F)the nearness of God.
‘Why have we (G)fasted and You do not see?
Why have we afflicted our souls and You do not know?’
Behold, on the (H)day of your fast you find your desire,
And oppress all your workers.
Behold, you fast for contention and (I)quarreling and to strike with a wicked fist.
You do not fast like you do today to (J)make your voice heard on high.
Is it a fast like this which I choose, a day for a man to afflict himself?
Is it for bowing [a]one’s head like a reed
And for spreading out (K)sackcloth and ashes as a bed?
Will you call this a fast, even an (L)acceptable day to Yahweh?
Is this not the fast which I choose,
To (M)loosen the bonds of wickedness,
To release the bands of [b]the yoke,
And to (N)let the oppressed go free
And (O)break every [c]yoke?
Is it not to (P)divide your bread [d]with the hungry
And (Q)bring the afflicted homeless into the house;
When you see the (R)naked, you cover him;
And not to (S)hide yourself from your own flesh?
Then your (T)light will break out like the dawn,
And your (U)recovery will speedily spring forth;
And your (V)righteousness will go before you;
The glory of (W)Yahweh will be your rear guard.
Then you will (X)call, and Yahweh will answer;
You will cry, and He will say, ‘Here I am.’
If you (Y)remove the [e]yoke from your midst,
The [f](Z)pointing of the finger and (AA)speaking wickedness,
10 And if you [g](AB)offer your soul to the hungry
And satisfy the soul of the afflicted,
Then your (AC)light will rise in darkness
And your thick darkness will become like midday.
11 And (AD)Yahweh will continually guide you,
And (AE)satisfy your soul in scorched places,
And (AF)fortify your bones;
And you will be like a (AG)watered garden,
And like a (AH)spring of water whose waters do not [h]fail.
12 Those from among you will (AI)rebuild the ancient waste places;
You will (AJ)raise up the foundations of past generation upon generation;
And you will be called the repairer of the (AK)breach,
The restorer of the paths for one to inhabit.

Keeping the Sabbath

13 “If because of the sabbath, you (AL)turn your foot
From doing your own desire on My holy day,
And call the sabbath a (AM)delight, the holy day of Yahweh honorable,
And honor it, by not doing your (AN)own ways,
By not finding your own desire
And (AO)speaking your own word,
14 Then you will take (AP)delight in Yahweh,
And I will make you ride (AQ)on the heights of the earth;
And I will feed you with the inheritance of Jacob your father,
For the (AR)mouth of Yahweh has spoken.”

Matthew 6

Giving to the Poor and Prayer

“Beware of doing your righteousness before men (A)to be noticed by them; otherwise you have no reward with your Father who is in heaven.

“Therefore, when you [a]give to the poor, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they (B)may be glorified by men. (C)Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full. But when you [b]give to the poor, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your [c]giving will be in secret; and (D)your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.

“And when you pray, you are not to be like the hypocrites; for they love to (E)stand and pray in the synagogues and on the street corners [d](F)so that they may be seen by men. (G)Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full. But you, when you pray, (H)go into your inner room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in secret, and (I)your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.

“And when you are praying, do not use meaningless repetition as the Gentiles do, for they suppose that they will be heard for their (J)many words. Therefore, do not be like them; for (K)your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.

(L)Pray, then, in this way:

‘Our Father who is in heaven,
Hallowed be Your name.
10 (M)Your kingdom come.
(N)Your will be done,
On earth as it is in heaven.
11 (O)Give us this day [e]our daily bread.
12 And (P)forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.
13 And do not lead us into temptation, but (Q)deliver us from [f](R)the evil one. [g][For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.’]

14 (S)For if you forgive [h]others for their transgressions, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But (T)if you do not forgive [i]others, then your Father will not forgive your transgressions.

Fasting

16 (U)Now whenever you fast, do not put on a gloomy face as the hypocrites do, for they [j]neglect their appearance so that they will be noticed by men when they are fasting. (V)Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full. 17 But you, when you fast, (W)anoint your head and wash your face 18 so that your fasting will not be noticed by men, but by your Father who is in secret; and your (X)Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.

Treasures in Heaven

19 (Y)Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves (Z)treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal; 21 for (AA)where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

22 (AB)The eye is the lamp of the body; so then if your eye is [k]clear, your whole body will be full of light. 23 But if (AC)your eye is [l]bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light that is in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!

24 (AD)No one can [m]serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot [n]serve God and [o](AE)wealth.

Do Not Worry

25 (AF)For this reason I say to you, [p]do not be (AG)worried about your [q]life, as to what you will eat or what you will drink; nor for your body, as to what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? 26 (AH)Look at the birds of the [r]air, that they do not sow, nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth much more than they? 27 And which of you by (AI)worrying can (AJ)add a single [s]cubit to his [t]life span? 28 And why are you (AK)worried about clothing? Observe how the lilies of the field grow; they do not toil nor do they spin, 29 yet I say to you that not even (AL)Solomon in all his glory clothed himself like one of these. 30 But if God so clothes the (AM)grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, will He not much more clothe you? (AN)You of little faith! 31 Do not (AO)worry then, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear for clothing?’ 32 For all these things the Gentiles eagerly seek; for (AP)your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. 33 But [u]seek first [v]His kingdom and His righteousness, and (AQ)all these things will be [w]added to you.

34 “So do not (AR)worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will worry about itself. [x]Each day has enough trouble of its own.
