Exodus 18

Jethro Counsels Moses

18 Jethro, the priest of Midian, Moses’ father-in-law, heard of all that God had done for Moses, and for Israel His people, and that the Lord had brought Israel out of Egypt.

Then Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, took Zipporah, Moses’ wife, after he had sent her back, and her two sons, one of whom was named Gershom; for he said, “I have been a sojourner in a foreign land.” And the name of the other was Eliezer, for he said, “The God of my father was my help, and He delivered me from the sword of Pharaoh.”

Then Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, came with his sons and his wife to Moses in the wilderness, where he camped at the mountain of God. And he said to Moses, “I, your father-in-law, Jethro, am coming to you, and your wife, and her two sons with her.”

Then Moses went out to meet his father-in-law, and bowed down and kissed him; and they asked each other of the other’s welfare, and then they went into the tent. Moses told his father-in-law all that the Lord had done to Pharaoh and to the Egyptians for Israel’s sake, and all the hardships that had come on them along the way, and how the Lord delivered them.

Jethro rejoiced because of all the goodness which the Lord had done for Israel, whom He had delivered out of the hand of the Egyptians. 10 Jethro said, “The Lord be blessed, who has delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of Pharaoh, who has delivered the people from under the hand of the Egyptians. 11 Now I know that the Lord is greater than all gods, for in the matter in which they treated the people insolently, He was above them.” 12 Then Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, took a burnt offering and sacrifices for God, and Aaron and all the elders of Israel came to eat bread with Moses’ father-in-law before God.

13 On the next day, Moses sat to judge the people, and the people stood around Moses from the morning until the evening. 14 When Moses’ father-in-law saw all that he was doing for the people, he said, “What is this thing that you are doing for the people? Why are you sitting by yourself while all the people stand around you from morning until evening?”

15 Then Moses said to his father-in-law, “Because the people come to me to inquire of God. 16 When they have a dispute, it comes to me, and I judge between a man and his neighbor, and I make known the statutes of God and His laws.”

17 Moses’ father-in-law said to him, “What you are doing is not good. 18 You will surely wear yourself out, both you, and these people who are with you, for this thing is too heavy for you. You are not able to do it by yourself. 19 Now listen to me, I will advise you, and may God be with you: You be a representative for the people to God so that you may bring their disputes to God. 20 And you shall teach them the statutes and laws and shall show them the way in which they must walk and the work that they must do. 21 Moreover, you shall choose out of all the people capable men who fear God, men of truth, hating dishonest gain, and place these men over them, to be rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens. 22 Let them judge the people at all times, and let it be that every difficult matter they shall bring to you, but every small matter they shall judge, so that it will be easier for you, and they will bear the burden with you. 23 If you shall do this thing and God commands you so, then you will be able to endure, and all these people also will go to their place in peace.”

24 So Moses listened to his father-in-law and did everything that he had said. 25 Moses chose capable men out of all Israel and made them heads over the people, rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens. 26 They judged the people at all times. They brought the difficult cases to Moses, but they judged every small matter themselves.

27 Moses sent out his father-in-law, and he went his way to his own land.

Luke 21

The Widow’s Offering(A)

21 He looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts in the treasury. He also saw a poor widow putting in two mites,[a] and He said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all of them. For all these out of their abundance have put in their gifts for God. But she out of her poverty has put in all the living she had.”

The Destruction of the Temple Foretold(B)

As some spoke of how the temple was adorned with beautiful stones and gifts, He said, “As for these things which you see, the days will come when not one stone shall be left on another that will not be thrown down.”

Signs and Persecutions(C)

They asked Him, “Teacher, when will these things be, and what will be the sign when this is about to happen?”

He said, “Beware lest you be deceived. For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am He,’ and ‘The time has drawn near.’ Therefore do not go after them. When you hear of wars and commotions, do not be afraid. For these things must first take place, but the end will not be at hand.”

10 Then He said to them, “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. 11 Great earthquakes will occur in various places, and there will be famines and pestilence. And there will be terrors and great signs from heaven.

12 “But before all these things, they will seize you and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues and prisons, and you will be brought before kings and governors for My name’s sake. 13 It will turn out as a testimony for you. 14 Therefore resolve in your hearts beforehand not to practice your defense. 15 For I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which all your opponents will be able to neither refute nor resist. 16 You will be betrayed by parents and brothers and relatives and friends. And they will put some of you to death. 17 You will be hated by all men for My name’s sake, 18 but not a hair of your head shall perish. 19 In your endurance you will gain your souls.

The Destruction of Jerusalem Foretold(D)

20 “When you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then you know that its desolation has drawn near. 21 Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, and let those who are in the city depart, and let not those who are in the country enter it. 22 For these are the days of vengeance, that all things which are written may be fulfilled. 23 But woe to those who are pregnant and to those who nurse in those days! For there will be great distress in the land and wrath upon this people. 24 They will fall by the edge of the sword and will be led away captive to all nations. And Jerusalem will be trampled on by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.

The Coming of the Son of Man(E)

25 “There will be signs in the sun and the moon and the stars; and on the earth distress of nations, with perplexity, the sea and the waves roaring; 26 men fainting from fear and expectation of what is coming on the inhabited earth. For the powers of heaven will be shaken. 27 Then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. 28 When these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, for your redemption is drawing near.”

The Lesson of the Fig Tree(F)

29 He told them this parable: “Look at the fig tree, and all the trees. 30 When they are sprouting leaves already, you see and know for yourselves that summer is now near. 31 So in like manner, when you see these things happening, you know that the kingdom of God is near.

32 “Truly, I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all these things are fulfilled. 33 Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away.

Exhortation to Watch

34 “Take heed to yourselves, lest your hearts become burdened by excessiveness and drunkenness and anxieties of life, and that Day comes on you unexpectedly. 35 For as a snare it will come on all those who dwell on the face of the whole earth. 36 Therefore watch always and pray that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will happen and to stand before the Son of Man.”

37 Each day He was teaching in the temple, and each night He went out and stayed on the mountain called the Mount of Olives. 38 And all the people came early in the morning to hear Him in the temple.

Job 36

Elihu Proclaims God’s Majesty

36 Elihu continued and said:

“Bear with me a little, and I will show you
    that I have yet to speak on God’s behalf.
I will bring my knowledge from afar
    and will ascribe righteousness to my Maker.
For truly my words will not be false;
    He who is perfect in knowledge is with you.

“Behold, God is mighty and despises no one;
    He is mighty in strength and wisdom.
He does not preserve the life of the wicked,
    but gives justice to the poor.
He does not withdraw His eyes from the righteous;
    but they are on the throne with kings,
    for He establishes them forever, and they are exalted.
If they are bound in chains
    and held in cords of affliction,
then He shows them their work,
    and their transgressions that they have exceeded;
10 and He opens their ear to discipline,
    and commands that they turn from iniquity.
11 If they obey and serve Him,
    they will spend their days in prosperity
    and their years in pleasures.
12 But if they do not obey,
    they will perish by the sword,
    and they will die without knowledge.

13 “But the hypocrites in heart heap up wrath;
    they do not cry out when He binds them.
14 They die in youth,
    and their life ends among the unclean.
15 He delivers the poor in their affliction,
    and opens their ears in oppression.

16 “Even so He would have removed you out of distress
    into a broad place where there is no restraint;
    and that which was set on your table would be full of richness.
17 But you are filled with the judgment due the wicked;
    judgment and justice take hold of you.
18 Because there is wrath, beware lest He take you away with a blow;
    even a great ransom cannot deliver you.
19 Will He esteem your riches?
    No, not gold, nor all the force of your strength.
20 Do not desire the night,
    when people are cut off in their place.
21 Take heed! Do not turn to iniquity,
    for you have chosen this rather than affliction.

22 “Behold, God is exalted in His power;
    who teaches like Him?
23 Who has prescribed His way for Him?
    Or who can say, ‘You have worked iniquity’?
24 Remember to magnify His work,
    which men behold.
25 Every man may see it;
    man may behold it from afar.
26 Look, God is great, and we do not know Him,
    nor can the number of His years be searched out.

27 “For He draws up the drops of water;
    they distill rain according to its mist,
28 which the clouds drop down,
    and drip upon man abundantly.
29 Indeed, can anyone understand the spreading of clouds,
    or the noise of His tent?
30 See, He spreads His light upon it
    and covers the bottom of the sea.
31 For by these He judges the people;
    He gives food in abundance.
32 With clouds He covers the light,
    and commands it to strike the mark.
33 Its thunder declares it,
    the cattle also, concerning the rising storm.

2 Corinthians 6

As workers together with God, we ask you not to receive the grace of God in vain. For He says:

“In an acceptable time I have listened to you,
    and in the day of salvation I have helped you.”[a]

Look, now is the accepted time; look, now is the day of salvation.

We give no offense in anything, that our service may not be blamed. But in all things we commend ourselves as servants of God: in much patience, in afflictions, in necessities, in distress, in stripes, in imprisonments, in tumults, in labors, in sleeplessness, and in hunger; by purity, by knowledge, by patience, by kindness, by the Holy Spirit, by genuine love, by the word of truth, by the power of God, by the armor of righteousness on the right hand and on the left, by honor and dishonor, by evil report and good report; as deceivers, and yet true; as unknown, and yet well known; as dying, and look, we live; as punished, but not killed; 10 as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; and as having nothing, and yet possessing all things.

11 O Corinthians, we have spoken frankly to you; our heart is opened wide. 12 You are not restrained by us, but you are restrained in your own affections. 13 In return (I speak as to my children) you also be open.

The Temple of the Living God

14 Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with unrighteousness? What communion has light with darkness? 15 What agreement has Christ with Belial? Or what part has he who believes with an unbeliever? 16 What agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God. As God has said:

“I will live in them
    and walk in them.
I will be their God,
    and they shall be My people.”[b]

17 Therefore,

“Come out from among them
    and be separate,
        says the Lord.
Do not touch what is unclean,
    and I will receive you.”[c]

18 “I will be a Father to you,
    and you shall be My sons and daughters,
        says the Lord Almighty.”[d]
