Genesis 3

Adam and Eve Sent Out from the Garden

Now (A)the serpent was more crafty than any beast of the field which Yahweh God had made. And he said to the woman, “Indeed, has God said, ‘[a]You shall not eat from [b]any tree of the garden’?” And the woman said to the serpent, “(B)From the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat; but from the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God said, ‘You shall not eat from it, and you shall not touch it, lest you die.’” (C)And the serpent said to the woman, “You surely will not die! For God knows that in the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and (D)you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” (E)Then the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, so she took from its fruit and ate; and she gave also to her husband with her, and he ate. And the eyes of both of them were opened, and they (F)knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves [c]loin coverings.

Then they heard the sound of (G)Yahweh God walking in the garden in the [d]cool of the day, (H)and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of Yahweh God in the midst of the trees of the garden. Yahweh God called to the man and said to him, “(I)Where are you?” 10 And he said, “(J)I heard the sound of You in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.” 11 And He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?” 12 (K)And the man said, “The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave to me from the tree, and I ate.” 13 Then Yahweh God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” And the woman said, “(L)The serpent deceived me, and I ate.” 14 And Yahweh God said to the serpent,

(M)Because you have done this,
Cursed are you more than any of the cattle,
And more than every beast of the field;
On your belly you will go,
And (N)dust you will eat
All the days of your life;
15 And I will put (O)enmity
Between you and the woman,
And between your seed and her seed;
(P)He shall [e]bruise you on the head,
And you shall bruise him on the heel.”

16 To the woman He said,

“I will greatly multiply
Your pain and [f]conception,
In pain you will [g](Q)bear children;
Your desire will be for your husband,
And (R)he will rule over you.”

17 Then to Adam He said, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten from the tree about which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat from it’;

(S)Cursed is the ground because of you;
(T)In [h]pain you will eat of it
All the days of your life.
18 Both thorns and thistles it shall (U)grow for you;
And you will eat the [i]plants of the field;
19 By the sweat of your [j]face
You will eat bread,
Till you (V)return to the ground,
Because (W)from it you were taken;
For you are dust,
And to dust you shall return.”

20 Now the man called his wife’s name [k](X)Eve, because she was the mother of all the living. 21 Then Yahweh God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife, and He clothed them.

22 Then Yahweh God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of (Y)Us [l]to know good and evil; and now, lest he send forth his hand and take also from (Z)the tree of life and eat and live forever”— 23 therefore Yahweh God sent him out from the garden of Eden, to [m]cultivate the ground from which he was taken. 24 So (AA)He drove the man out; and at the (AB)east of the garden of Eden He stationed the (AC)cherubim and the flaming sword which turned every direction to [n]guard the way to (AD)the tree of life.

Matthew 3

The Preaching of John the Baptist

Now (A)in those days [a](B)John the Baptist *[b]came, [c]preaching in the (C)wilderness of Judea, saying, (D)Repent, for (E)the kingdom of heaven [d]is at hand.” For this is the (F)one referred to [e]by Isaiah the prophet, saying,

(G)The voice of one [f]crying in the wilderness,
(H)Make ready the way of the [g]Lord,
Make His paths straight!’”

Now John himself had [h](I)a garment of camel’s hair and a leather belt around his waist; and his food was (J)locusts and wild honey. Then Jerusalem (K)was going out to him, and all Judea, and all (L)the district around the Jordan; and they were being (M)baptized by him in the Jordan River, as they confessed their sins.

But when he saw many of the (N)Pharisees and (O)Sadducees coming for his baptism, he said to them, “You (P)brood of vipers, who warned you to flee from (Q)the wrath to come? (R)Therefore bear fruit (S)in keeping with repentance; and do not suppose that you can say to yourselves, ‘(T)We have Abraham for our father’; for I say to you that from these stones God is able to raise up children to Abraham. 10 And the (U)axe is already laid at the root of the trees; therefore (V)every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.

11 “As for me, (W)I baptize you with water for repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, and I am not fit to remove His sandals; (X)He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 12 His (Y)winnowing fork is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clear His threshing floor; and He will (Z)gather His wheat into the barn, but He will burn up the (AA)chaff with (AB)unquenchable fire.”

The Baptism of Jesus

13 (AC)Then Jesus *arrived (AD)from Galilee at the Jordan coming to John to be baptized by him. 14 But John tried to prevent Him, saying, “I have need to be baptized by You, and do You come to me?” 15 But Jesus answered and said to him, “Permit it at this time; for in this way it is fitting for us (AE)to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he *permitted Him. 16 And after being baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and [i](AF)he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming upon Him, 17 and behold, there was a voice out of the heavens saying, “(AG)This is [j]My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased.”

Ezra 3

The Altar Is Built and Daily Offerings Begin

Then the seventh month came, and (A)the sons of Israel were in the cities. And the people gathered together as one man to Jerusalem. Then (B)Jeshua the son of Jozadak and his brothers the priests, and (C)Zerubbabel the son (D)of Shealtiel and his brothers arose and (E)built the altar of the God of Israel to offer burnt offerings on it, (F)as it is written in the law of Moses, the man of God. So they set up the altar on its foundation, for [a](G)they were terrified because of the peoples of the lands; and they (H)offered burnt offerings on it to Yahweh, burnt offerings morning and evening. They celebrated the (I)Feast of [b]Booths, (J)as it is written, and offered [c]the fixed number of burnt offerings daily, (K)according to the legal judgment, as each day required; and afterward there was a (L)continual burnt offering, also (M)for the new moons and (N)for all the appointed times of Yahweh that were set apart as holy, and from everyone who offered a freewill offering to Yahweh. From the first day of the seventh month they began to offer burnt offerings to Yahweh, but the foundation of the temple of Yahweh had not been laid. Then they gave money to the masons and [d]carpenters, and (O)food, drink, and oil to the Sidonians and to the Tyrians, (P)to bring cedar wood from Lebanon to the sea at (Q)Joppa, according to the permission they had [e]from (R)Cyrus king of Persia.

The Foundation of the Temple of Yahweh

Now in the second year of their coming to the house of God at Jerusalem in the second month, (S)Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel and Jeshua the son of Jozadak and the rest of their brothers the priests and the Levites, and all who came from the captivity to Jerusalem, began the work and (T)appointed the Levites from twenty years and older to direct the work of the house of Yahweh. Then (U)Jeshua with his sons and brothers stood united with Kadmiel and his sons, the sons of [f]Judah and the sons of Henadad with their sons and brothers the Levites, to direct those who do the work in the house of God.

10 So the builders (V)laid the foundation of the temple of Yahweh. Then [g]the priests stood in their apparel with trumpets, and the Levites, the sons of Asaph, with cymbals, to praise Yahweh (W)according to the [h]directions of King David of Israel. 11 (X)And they sang, praising and giving thanks to Yahweh, saying, “(Y)For He is good, for His lovingkindness endures forever upon Israel.” And all the people shouted with a great shout when they praised Yahweh because the foundation of the house of Yahweh was laid. 12 Yet many of the priests and Levites and heads of fathers’ households, (Z)the old men who had seen the first house of Yahweh, were weeping with a loud voice when the foundation of this house was laid before their eyes, while many in loud shouts with gladness were raising their voice, 13 so that the people could not distinguish the [i]voices of the shouting of gladness from the [j]voices of the weeping of the people, for the people were shouting with a loud shout, and those [k]voices were heard far away.

Acts 3

The Lame Beggar Healed

Now (A)Peter and John were going up to the temple at the [a]ninth hour, (B)the hour of prayer. And (C)a man who had been lame from his mother’s womb was being carried, whom they (D)used to set down daily at the gate of the temple which is called Beautiful, (E)in order to beg [b]alms of those who were entering the temple. When he saw (F)Peter and John about to go into the temple, he began asking to receive alms. But when Peter, along with John, (G)fixed his gaze on him, he said, “Look at us!” And he began to give them his attention, expecting to receive something from them. But Peter said, “I do not possess silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you: (H)In the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene—walk!” And seizing him by the right hand, he raised him up; and immediately his feet and his ankles were strengthened. (I)And leaping up, he stood upright and began to walk; and he entered the temple with them, walking and leaping and praising God. And (J)all the people saw him walking and praising God; 10 and they were recognizing him, that he was the one who used to (K)sit at the Beautiful Gate of the temple to beg alms, and they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him.

Peter’s Sermon in Solomon’s Portico

11 And while he was clinging to (L)Peter and John, all the people ran together to them at the [c](M)portico called Solomon’s, full of wonder. 12 But when Peter saw this, he replied to the people, “Men of Israel, why do you marvel at this, or why do you gaze at us, as if by our own power or piety we had made him walk? 13 (N)The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, (O)the God of our fathers, has glorified His (P)Servant Jesus, whom (Q)you delivered and denied in the presence of (R)Pilate, when he had (S)decided to release Him. 14 But you denied (T)the Holy and Righteous One and (U)asked for a murderer to be granted to you, 15 but put to death the (V)Author of life, whom (W)God raised from the dead, a fact to which we are (X)witnesses. 16 And on the basis of faith (Y)in His name, it is [d]the name of Jesus which has strengthened this man whom you see and know; and the faith which is through Him has given him this perfect health in the presence of you all.

17 “And now, brothers, I know that you acted (Z)in ignorance, just as your (AA)rulers did also. 18 But the things which (AB)God announced beforehand by the mouth of all the prophets, (AC)that His [e]Christ would suffer, He has thus fulfilled. 19 Therefore (AD)repent and return, so that your sins may be wiped away, in order that [f](AE)times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord; 20 and that He may send Jesus, the [g]Christ appointed for you, 21 (AF)whom heaven must receive until the [h]period of (AG)restoration of all things about which (AH)God spoke by the mouth of His holy prophets from ancient time. 22 Moses said, ‘(AI)The [i]Lord God will raise up for you a prophet [j]like me from your brothers; to Him you shall listen to everything He says to you. 23 (AJ)And it will be that every (AK)soul that does not heed that prophet (AL)shall be utterly destroyed from among the people.’ 24 And likewise, (AM)all the prophets who have spoken, from Samuel and his successors onward, also proclaimed these days. 25 It is you who are (AN)the sons of the prophets and of the (AO)covenant which God [k]made with your fathers, saying to Abraham, ‘(AP)And in your seed all the families of the earth shall be blessed.’ 26 For you (AQ)first, God (AR)raised up His [l]Servant and sent Him to bless you by turning every one of you from your wicked ways.”
