Deuteronomy 28:20-68

20 “Yahweh will send upon you[a] the curse,[b] the panic,[c] and the threat[d] in everything that you undertake,[e] until you are destroyed and until you perish quickly[f] because of[g] the evil of your deeds in that[h] you have forsaken me. 21 Yahweh will cause the plague to cling to you until it consumes you[i] from the land that you are going to,[j] to take possession of it. 22 Yahweh will afflict you with the wasting diseases and with the fever and with the inflammation and with the scorching heat and with the sword[k] and with the blight and with the mildew, and they shall pursue you until you perish.[l] 23 And your heavens that are over your heads shall be like bronze, and the earth that is under you shall be like iron. 24 Yahweh will change the rain of your land to fine dust and to sand; from the heaven it shall come down upon you until you are destroyed.[m]

25 “Yahweh shall cause you to be defeated before[n] your enemies; on one road you shall go against[o] them,[p] but you will flee on seven roads before[q] them,[r] and you shall become a thing of horror to all of the kingdoms of the earth. 26 And your dead bodies shall be as food for all of the birds of the heaven and to the animals of the earth, and there shall not be anyone to frighten them away.[s]

27 “Yahweh shall afflict you with the boils of Egypt and with tumors and with the scurvy and with the skin rash that cannot be healed.[t] 28 Yahweh shall afflict you with madness and with blindness and with confusion of heart. 29 And you shall be groping at noon just as the blind person gropes in the dark, and you shall not succeed in finding your way, and you shall only be abused and robbed all the time,[u] and there will not be anyone who will rescue you. [v] 30 You shall become engaged to a woman, but another man shall sleep[w] with her; you shall build a house, but you shall not live in it; a vineyard you shall plant, but you shall not enjoy it. 31 Your ox shall be slaughtered before your eyes, and you shall not eat it; your donkey shall be stolen right before you,[x] and it shall not be returned to you; your sheep and your goats shall be given to your enemies, and there shall not be anyone who rescues you.[y] 32 Your sons and your daughters shall be given to other people, and you will be looking on[z] longingly[aa] for[ab] them all day, but you will be powerless to do anything.[ac] 33 A people that you do not know shall consume the harvest of your land and all your labor, and you will be only oppressed and crushed for the rest of your lives.[ad] 34 You shall become mad because of what your eyes shall see.[ae] 35 Yahweh shall strike you with grievous boils on the knees and on the upper thighs from which you will not be able to be healed,[af] from the sole of your foot and up to your crown. 36 Yahweh will bring you and your king whom you set up over you to a nation that you or your ancestors[ag] have not known, and there you will serve other gods of wood and stone. 37 And you will become a horror and a proverb and ridicule among all the peoples where Yahweh drives you there.

38 “You shall carry out much seed to the field, but you shall gather little produce, for the locust shall devour it. 39 You shall plant vineyards and you shall dress[ah] them, but you shall not drink wine and you shall not gather grapes, for the worm shall eat it.[ai] 40 There shall be olive trees for you in all of your territory, but you shall not anoint yourself, for your olives[aj] shall drop off. 41 You shall bear sons and daughters, but they shall not be yours,[ak] for they shall go into captivity. 42 The cricket shall take possession of all your trees and the fruit of your ground. 43 The alien that is in your midst shall ascend over you, higher and higher, but you shall go down lower and lower. 44 He shall lend to you, but you shall not lend to him; he shall be the head, but you shall be the tail.

45 “And all of these curses shall come over you, and they shall pursue you, and they shall overtake you until you are destroyed,[al] because you did not listen[am] to the voice of Yahweh your God, by observing[an] his commandments and his statutes that he commanded you. 46 And they shall be among you as a sign and as a wonder and among your offspring forever.[ao]

47 Because[ap] of the fact that you did not serve Yahweh your God with joy and with gladness of heart for the abundance of everything, 48 then you shall serve your enemies, whom Yahweh will send against you under conditions of famine, in thirst, in nakedness, and in a lack of everything; and he shall place[aq] a yoke of iron on your neck until he has destroyed you.[ar] 49 Yahweh will raise up against you a nation from far off, from the end of the earth, attacking as the eagle swoops down, a nation whose language you will not understand,[as] 50 a grim-faced nation[at] who does not show respect[au] to the old and the young and does not show pity. 51 And it[av] shall consume the fruit of your livestock and the fruit of your ground until you are destroyed,[aw] and who will not leave for you any grain, wine, and olive oil, calves of your herds,[ax] and lambs of[ay] your flock until it has destroyed you.[az] 52 And it shall besiege you in all your towns until your high and fortified walls fall,[ba] which you are trusting in[bb] throughout your land;[bc] and it shall besiege you in all of your towns in all of your land that Yahweh your God has given to you. 53 And you shall eat the fruit of your womb, the flesh of your sons and your daughters, whom Yahweh your God gave to you, during the siege and during the distress[bd] your enemy inflicts upon you. 54 The most refined and the very sensitive[be] man among you shall be mean with his brother[bf] and against his beloved wife[bg] and against the rest[bh] of his children that he has left over, 55 by refraining from giving[bi] to even one of them any of the meat of his children that he eats, because there is not anything that is left over for him during the siege and distress[bj] that your enemy inflicts upon you. 56 The most refined and the most delicate woman among you, who shall[bk] not venture to put the sole of her foot on the ground from being so delicate and from such gentleness, shall be mean to her beloved husband[bl] and against her son and against her daughter, 57 and even concerning her afterbirth that goes out[bm] from between her feet and also concerning her children that she bears, because she eats them for lack of anything in secret during the siege and during the distress[bn] that your enemy inflicts upon her in your towns.[bo]

58 “If you do not diligently observe[bp] all the words of this law written in this scroll by revering this glorious and awesome name, Yahweh your God, 59 then Yahweh shall overwhelm you with your plagues and the plagues of your offspring, severe plagues and lasting illnesses, grievous and enduring. 60 And he shall bring back upon you all the diseases of Egypt concerning which you were in dread[bq] because of them.[br] 61 Also any illness and any plague[bs] that is not written in the scroll of this law, he shall bring them, Yahweh, upon you until you are destroyed. 62 And you shall remain only a few people[bt] in place of the fact you were formerly as the stars of heaven as far as number is concerned, because you did not listen to the voice of Yahweh your God. 63 And then[bu] as Yahweh delighted over you to make you prosperous[bv] to make you numerous, so Yahweh shall delight over you to exterminate you[bw] and to destroy you, and so you shall be plucked from the land that you are going there to take possession of it. 64 And Yahweh shall scatter you among all the nations from one end of the earth up to the other end of the earth, and there you shall serve other gods that you have not known nor[bx] your ancestors,[by] gods of wood and stone. 65 And among these nations you shall not find rest, and there shall not be a resting place for the sole of your foot, and Yahweh shall give you there an anxious heart and a weakening of eyes[bz] and a languishing of your inner self.[ca] 66 And your life shall hang in doubt before you,[cb] and you shall be startled[cc] night and day, and you shall not be confident of your life. 67 In the morning you shall say, ‘If only it was evening!’[cd] and in the evening you shall say ‘If only it was morning!’[ce] because of the dread of your heart that you shall feel, and because of the sight of your eyes that you shall see. 68 And Yahweh shall bring you back to Egypt in ships by the route that I promised[cf] to you thatYou shall not see it again!’[cg] And you shall sell yourself there to your enemies as slaves and as female slaves, but there will not be a buyer.”

Psalm 119:25-48

Daleth

25 My soul clings to the dust;
revive me according to your word.
26 I told of my ways, and you answered me;
teach me your statutes.
27 Make me understand the way of your precepts,
that I may meditate on your wonderful things.
28 My soul weeps[a] because of grief;
strengthen me according to your word.
29 Remove from me the deceptive way,
and graciously give me your law.
30 I have chosen the faithful way;
I have set your ordinances before me.
31 I cling to your testimonies;
O Yahweh, do not let me be put to shame.
32 I will run the way of your commands,
for you will enlarge my heart.[b]

Heʼ

33 Teach me, O Yahweh, the way of your statutes,
and I will keep it to the end.
34 Give me understanding, that I may keep your law
and heed it with my whole heart.
35 Cause me to walk in the path of your commands,
for I delight in it.
36 Incline my heart to your testimonies,
and not to dishonest gain.
37 Turn away my eyes from looking at what is worthless;
revive me in your ways.
38 Fulfill your word[c] to your servant,
which is to bring about a reverence for you.
39 Turn away my disgrace that I dread,
for your ordinances are good.
40 Look, I have longed for your precepts;
revive me in your righteousness.

Waw

41 Let your acts of loyal love also come to me, O Yahweh,
your salvation according to your word.[d]
42 Then I will have an answer for the one who taunts me,
for I trust your word.
43 And do not snatch the word of truth utterly from my mouth,
for I hope in your ordinances.
44 So I will heed your law continually,
forever and ever.
45 And I will go about freely,[e]
for I have sought your precepts.
46 And I will speak of your testimonies before kings,
and will not be ashamed.
47 And I will take delight in your commands,
which I love.
48 And I will lift up my hands[f] to your commands, which I love,
and I will meditate on your statutes.

Isaiah 55

Invitation to True Rewards

55 “Ho! Everyone thirsty, come to the waters!
    And whoever has no money, come, buy and eat,
and come, buy without money,
    wine and milk without price!
Why do you weigh out money for what is not food,
    and your labor for what cannot satisfy?[a]
Listen carefully to me, and eat what is good,
    and let your soul take pleasure in rich[b] food.
Extend your ear, and come to me!
    Listen so that[c] your soul may live,
and I will make[d] an everlasting covenant with[e] you,
    the enduring proofs of the mercies shown to[f] David.
Look! I made[g] him a witness to the peoples,
    a leader and a commander for the peoples.
Look! You shall call a nation that you do not know,
    and a nation that does not know you shall run to you,
because of Yahweh your God,
    and the holy one of Israel, for he has glorified you.”
Seek Yahweh while he lets himself be found;[h]
    call him while he is[i] near.
Let the wicked forsake his way,
    and the man of sin his thoughts.
And let him return to Yahweh, that[j] he may take pity on him,
    and to our God, for he will forgive manifold.[k]
“For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
    and your ways are not my ways,”

declares[l] Yahweh.

“For as the heavens are higher[m] than the earth,
    so my ways are higher[n] than your ways,
    and my thoughts than your thoughts.
10 For just as the rain and the snow come down from heaven,
    and they do not return there
except they have watered the earth thoroughly
    and cause it to bring forth and sprout,
and give seed to the sower
    and bread to the eater,
11 so shall be my word that goes out from my mouth.
    It shall not return to me without success,
but shall accomplish[o] what I desire
    and be successful in the thing for which I sent it.
12 For you shall go out in joy,
    and you shall be led in peace.
The mountains and the hills shall break forth before you, rejoicing
    and all the trees of the field shall clap hands.[p]
13 Instead of the thorn bush, the juniper shall go up;
    instead of the brier, the myrtle shall go up,
and it shall serve as a memorial to Yahweh,
    for an everlasting sign that shall not be cut off.”

Matthew 3

John the Baptist Begins His Ministry

Now in those days John the Baptist came preaching in the Judean wilderness and saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near!” For this is the one who was spoken about by the prophet Isaiah, saying,

“The voice of one crying out in the wilderness,
‘Prepare the way of the Lord,
    make his paths straight.’”[a]

Now John himself had his clothing made from camel’s hair and a belt made of leather around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey. Then Jerusalem and all Judea and all the district around the Jordan were going out to him, and they were being baptized by him in the Jordan River as they[b] confessed their sins.

But when he[c] saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, “Offspring of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? Therefore produce fruit worthy of repentance! And do not think to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as father.’ For I say to you that God is able to raise up children for Abraham from these stones! 10 Already now the ax is positioned at the root of the trees; therefore every tree not producing good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 11 I baptize you with water for repentance, but the one who comes after me is more powerful than I am, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 12 His winnowing shovel is in his hand, and he will clean out his threshing floor and will gather his wheat into the storehouse, but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”

The Baptism of Jesus

13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John in order to be baptized by him. 14 But John tried to prevent[d] him, saying, “I need[e] to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” 15 But Jesus answered and[f] said to him, “Permit it now, for in this way it is right for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he permitted him. 16 Now after he[g] was baptized, Jesus immediately went up from the water, and behold, the heavens opened[h] and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove coming[i] upon him. 17 And behold, there was[j] a voice from heaven saying, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”
