The Journey from Egypt to Jordan
33 These are the journeys of the sons of Israel, by which they came out from the land of Egypt by their armies, by (A)the hand of Moses and Aaron. 2 And Moses wrote down their starting places according to their journeys by the [a]command of Yahweh, and these are their journeys according to their starting places.
3 (B)They journeyed from Rameses in the first month, on the fifteenth day of the first month; on the [b]next day after the Passover the sons of Israel (C)started out [c]with a high hand in the sight of all the Egyptians,
4 but the Egyptians were burying all their firstborn whom Yahweh had struck down among them. Yahweh had also executed judgments (D)on their gods.
5 Then (E)the sons of Israel journeyed from Rameses and camped in Succoth.
6 (F)They journeyed from Succoth and camped in Etham, which is on the edge of the wilderness.
7 (G)They journeyed from Etham and turned back to Pi-hahiroth, which faces Baal-zephon, and they camped before Migdol.
8 (H)They journeyed [d]from before Hahiroth and passed through the midst of the sea into the wilderness; and (I)they went three days’ journey in the wilderness of Etham and camped at Marah.
9 (J)They journeyed from Marah and came to Elim; and in Elim there were twelve springs of water and seventy palm trees, and they camped there.
10 They journeyed from Elim and camped by the [e]Red Sea.
11 They journeyed from the [f]Red Sea and camped in (K)the wilderness of Sin.
12 They journeyed from the wilderness of Sin and camped at Dophkah.
13 They journeyed from Dophkah and camped at Alush.
14 They journeyed from Alush and camped (L)at Rephidim; now it was there that the people had no water to drink.
15 They journeyed from Rephidim and camped in (M)the wilderness of Sinai.
16 They journeyed from the wilderness of Sinai and camped at (N)Kibroth-hattaavah.
17 They journeyed from Kibroth-hattaavah and camped at (O)Hazeroth.
18 They journeyed from Hazeroth and camped at Rithmah.
19 They journeyed from Rithmah and camped at Rimmon-perez.
20 They journeyed from Rimmon-perez and camped at (P)Libnah.
21 They journeyed from Libnah and camped at Rissah.
22 They journeyed from Rissah and camped in Kehelathah.
23 They journeyed from Kehelathah and camped at Mount Shepher.
24 They journeyed from Mount Shepher and camped at Haradah.
25 They journeyed from Haradah and camped at Makheloth.
26 They journeyed from Makheloth and camped at Tahath.
27 They journeyed from Tahath and camped at Terah.
28 They journeyed from Terah and camped at Mithkah.
29 They journeyed from Mithkah and camped at Hashmonah.
30 They journeyed from Hashmonah and camped at (Q)Moseroth.
31 They journeyed from Moseroth and camped at Bene-jaakan.
32 They journeyed from (R)Bene-jaakan and camped at Hor-haggidgad.
33 They journeyed from Hor-haggidgad and camped at (S)Jotbathah.
34 They journeyed from Jotbathah and camped at Abronah.
35 They journeyed from Abronah and camped at (T)Ezion-geber.
36 They journeyed from Ezion-geber and camped in the wilderness of (U)Zin, that is, Kadesh.
37 They journeyed from Kadesh and camped at (V)Mount Hor, (W)at the edge of the land of Edom.
38 (X)Then Aaron the priest went up to Mount Hor at the [g]command of Yahweh, and he died there in the fortieth year after the sons of Israel had come from the land of Egypt, on the first day in the fifth month.
39 Now Aaron was 123 years old when he died on Mount Hor.
40 Now the Canaanite, the king of (Y)Arad [h]who lived in the [i]Negev in the land of Canaan, heard when the sons of Israel were coming.
41 Then they journeyed from Mount Hor and camped at Zalmonah.
42 They journeyed from Zalmonah and camped at Punon.
43 They journeyed from Punon and camped at (Z)Oboth.
44 They journeyed from Oboth and camped at Iye-abarim, at the border of Moab.
45 They journeyed from Iyim and camped at Dibon-gad.
46 They journeyed from Dibon-gad and camped at Almon-diblathaim.
47 They journeyed from Almon-diblathaim and camped in the mountains of (AA)Abarim, before Nebo.
48 They journeyed from the mountains of Abarim and (AB)camped in the plains of Moab by the Jordan opposite Jericho.
49 They camped by the Jordan, from Beth-jeshimoth as far as (AC)Abel-shittim in the plains of Moab.
Statutes of Possessing the Land
50 Then Yahweh spoke to Moses in the plains of Moab by the Jordan opposite Jericho, saying, 51 “Speak to the sons of Israel and say to them, ‘(AD)When you cross over the Jordan into the land of Canaan, 52 then you shall dispossess all the inhabitants of the land from before you and (AE)destroy all their carved stones and destroy all their molten images and demolish all their high places; 53 (AF)and you shall take possession of the land and inhabit it, for I have given the land to you to possess it. 54 (AG)And you shall inherit the land by lot according to your families; to the larger you shall give a larger inheritance, and to the smaller you shall give a smaller inheritance. Wherever the lot falls to anyone, that shall be his. You shall inherit according to the tribes of your fathers. 55 But if you do not dispossess the inhabitants of the land from before you, then it will be that those whom you let remain of them will become (AH)as pricks in your eyes and as thorns in your sides, and they will trouble you in the land which you inhabit. 56 And it will be as I plan to do to them, so I will do to you.’”
That the Generation to Come Might Know
A [a]Maskil of Asaph.
78 (A)Give ear, O my people, to my [b]instruction;
(B)Incline your ears to the words of my mouth.
2 I will (C)open my mouth in a parable;
I will pour forth (D)dark sayings of old,
3 Which we have heard and known,
And (E)our fathers have recounted to us.
4 We will (F)not conceal them from their children,
But (G)recount to the generation to come the praises of Yahweh,
And His strength and His (H)wondrous deeds that He has done.
5 For He established a (I)testimony in Jacob
And set a (J)law in Israel,
Which He (K)commanded our fathers
That they should [c](L)teach them to their children,
6 (M)That the generation to come might know, even (N)the children yet to be born,
That they may arise and (O)recount them to their children,
7 That they should set their confidence in God
And (P)not forget the deeds of God,
But (Q)observe His commandments,
8 And (R)not be like their fathers,
A (S)stubborn and rebellious generation,
A generation that (T)did not [d]prepare its heart
And whose spirit was not (U)faithful to God.
9 The sons of Ephraim [e]were (V)archers equipped with bows,
Yet (W)they turned back in the day of battle.
10 They (X)did not keep the covenant of God
And refused to (Y)walk in His law;
11 So they (Z)forgot His acts
And His [f]wondrous deeds that He had shown them.
12 (AA)He did wonders before their fathers
In the land of Egypt, in the (AB)field of Zoan.
13 He (AC)split the sea and caused them to pass through,
And He made the waters stand (AD)up like a heap.
14 Then He led them with the cloud by (AE)day
And all the night with a (AF)light of fire.
15 He was (AG)splitting the rocks in the wilderness
And so gave them abundant drink like the ocean depths.
16 He (AH)brought forth streams also from the cliff face
And caused waters to run down like rivers.
17 Yet they still continued to sin against Him,
To (AI)rebel against the Most High in the desert.
18 And in their heart they (AJ)put God to the test
By asking for (AK)food according to their desire.
19 Then they spoke against God;
They said, “(AL)Can God prepare a table in the wilderness?
20 Behold, He (AM)struck the rock so that waters gushed out,
And streams were overflowing;
Can He give bread also?
Will He prepare [g](AN)meat for His people?”
21 Therefore Yahweh heard and [h]was (AO)full of wrath;
And a fire was kindled against Jacob
And anger also mounted against Israel,
22 Because they (AP)did not believe in God
And did not trust in His salvation.
23 Yet He commanded the skies above
And (AQ)opened the doors of heaven;
24 He (AR)rained down manna upon them to eat
And gave them (AS)grain from heaven.
25 Man ate the bread of [i]angels;
He sent them provision (AT)to satisfy.
26 He (AU)led forth the east wind in the heavens
And by His strength He guided the south wind.
27 Then He rained [j]meat upon them like the dust,
Even (AV)winged fowl like the sand of the seas,
28 He caused them to fall in the midst of His camp,
All around His dwelling places.
29 So they (AW)ate and were very satisfied,
And their desire He brought to them.
30 [k]Before they had satisfied their desire,
(AX)While their food was in their mouths,
31 The (AY)anger of God rose against them
And killed [l]some of their (AZ)stoutest ones,
And [m]subdued the choice men of Israel.
32 In spite of all this they (BA)still sinned
And (BB)did not believe in His wondrous deeds.
33 So He brought (BC)their days to an end in [n]futility
And their years in sudden terror.
34 When He killed them, then they (BD)sought Him,
And returned and sought (BE)earnestly for God;
35 And they remembered that God was their (BF)rock,
And the Most High God their (BG)Redeemer.
36 But they (BH)deceived Him with their mouth
And (BI)lied to Him with their tongue.
37 For their heart was not (BJ)prepared to remain with Him,
Nor were they faithful in His covenant.
Yahweh Will Swallow Up Death
25 O Yahweh, You are (A)my God;
I will exalt You, I will give thanks to Your name;
For You have (B)worked wonders,
(C)Counsels formed long ago, with perfect faithfulness.
2 For You have made a city into a (D)heap,
A (E)fortified town into a ruin;
A (F)palace of strangers is a city no more,
It will never be rebuilt.
3 Therefore a strong people will (G)glorify You;
(H)Towns of ruthless nations will fear You.
4 For You have been a (I)strong defense for the poor,
A strong defense for the needy in his distress,
A (J)refuge from the storm, a shade from the heat;
For the breath of the (K)ruthless
Is like a rain storm against a wall.
5 Like heat in a dry land, You subdue the (L)rumbling of strangers;
Like heat by the shadow of a cloud, the song of the ruthless is [a]silenced.
6 (M)And Yahweh of hosts will prepare a [b]lavish banquet for (N)all peoples on this mountain;
A banquet of [c]aged wine, [d]choice pieces with marrow,
And [e]refined, aged wine.
7 And on this mountain He will swallow up the [f](O)covering which is over all peoples,
Even the veil which is [g]stretched over all nations.
8 He will (P)swallow up death for all time,
And Lord Yahweh will (Q)wipe tears away from all faces,
And He will remove the (R)reproach of His people from all the earth;
For Yahweh has spoken.
9 And it will be said in that day,
“Behold, (S)this is our God in whom we have (T)hoped that (U)He would save us.
This is Yahweh in whom we have hoped;
(V)Let us rejoice and be glad in His salvation.”
10 For the hand of Yahweh will rest on this mountain,
And (W)Moab will be trodden down in his place
As straw is trodden down in the water of a manure pile.
11 And he will (X)spread out his hands in the middle of it
As a swimmer spreads out his hands to swim,
But Yahweh will (Y)lay low his lofty pride together with the trickery of his hands.
12 The (Z)unassailable fortifications of your walls He will bring down,
Lay low, and cast to the ground, even to the dust.
Children of God, Love One Another
3 See [a](A)how great a love the Father has given to us, that we would be called (B)children of God; and we are. For this reason the world does not know us, because (C)it did not know Him. 2 (D)Beloved, now we are (E)children of God, and (F)it has not been manifested as yet what we will be. We know that when He (G)is manifested, we will be (H)like Him, because we will (I)see Him just as He is. 3 And everyone who has this (J)hope fixed on Him (K)purifies himself, just as He is pure.
4 Everyone who does sin also does lawlessness; and (L)sin is lawlessness. 5 And you know that He (M)was manifested in order to (N)take away sins, and (O)in Him there is no sin. 6 No one who abides in Him (P)sins; no one who sins has seen Him or [b](Q)has come to know Him. 7 (R)Little children, let no one (S)deceive you. (T)The one who does righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous. 8 The one who does sin is (U)of the devil, because the devil sins from the beginning. (V)The Son of God (W)was manifested for this purpose, (X)to destroy the works of the devil. 9 Everyone who has been [c](Y)born of God (Z)does not sin, because His seed abides in him; and he cannot sin, because he has been [d]born of God. 10 By this the (AA)children of God and the (AB)children of the devil are manifested: everyone who does not do righteousness is not of God, as well as the one who (AC)does not love his (AD)brother.
11 (AE)For this is the message (AF)which you have heard from the beginning, (AG)that we should love one another; 12 not as (AH)Cain, who was of (AI)the evil one and slew his brother. And for what reason did he slay him? Because (AJ)his deeds were evil, and his brother’s were righteous.
13 Do not marvel, brothers, if (AK)the world hates you. 14 We know that we have (AL)passed out of death into life, (AM)because we love the brothers. The one who does not love abides in death. 15 Everyone who (AN)hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that (AO)no murderer has eternal life abiding in him. 16 By this we have known love, that (AP)He laid down His life for us; and (AQ)we ought to lay down our lives for the (AR)brothers. 17 But (AS)whoever has the world’s goods, and sees his brother in need and (AT)closes his [e]heart [f]against him, (AU)how does the love of God abide in him? 18 (AV)Little children, let us not love with word or with tongue, but in deed and (AW)truth. 19 And by this we will know that we are (AX)of the truth, and will [g]assure our heart before Him 20 [h]in whatever our heart condemns us; for God is greater than our heart and knows all things. 21 (AY)Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have (AZ)confidence [i]before God; 22 and (BA)whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we (BB)keep His commandments and do (BC)the things that are pleasing in His sight.
23 And this is His commandment, that we [j](BD)believe in (BE)the name of His Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, just as (BF)He gave a commandment to us. 24 And the one who (BG)keeps His commandments (BH)abides in Him, and He in him. (BI)We know by this that (BJ)He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He gave us.
