Genesis 28

Jacob Is Sent to Laban

28 So Isaac called Jacob and (A)blessed him and commanded him and said to him, “(B)You shall not take a wife from the daughters of Canaan. Arise, go to Paddan-aram, to the house of (C)Bethuel your mother’s father; and from there take to yourself a wife from the daughters of Laban your mother’s brother. May [a](D)God Almighty (E)bless you and (F)make you fruitful and (G)multiply you, that you may become an (H)assembly of peoples. May He also give you the (I)blessing of Abraham, to you and to your seed with you, that you may (J)possess the land of your (K)sojournings, which God gave to Abraham.” Then (L)Isaac sent Jacob away, and he went to Paddan-aram to Laban, son of Bethuel the Aramean, the brother of Rebekah, the mother of Jacob and Esau.

And Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob and sent him away to Paddan-aram to take for himself a wife from there, and that when he blessed him he commanded him, saying, “(M)You shall not take a wife from the daughters of Canaan,” and that Jacob had listened to his father and his mother and had gone to Paddan-aram. So Esau saw that (N)the daughters of Canaan were displeasing [b]in the sight of his father Isaac; and Esau went to Ishmael and took Mahalath, the daughter of Ishmael, Abraham’s son, the sister of Nebaioth, to be his wife, (O)besides the wives that he had.

Jacob’s Dream

10 Then Jacob departed from (P)Beersheba and went toward (Q)Haran. 11 And he reached [c]a (R)certain place and spent the night there because the sun had set; and he took one of the stones of the place and put it [d]under his head and lay down in that place. 12 (S)Then he had a dream, and behold, a [e]ladder stood on the earth with its top touching heaven; and behold, (T)the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. 13 And behold, (U)Yahweh stood [f]above it and said, “I am Yahweh, (V)the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie, I will give it (W)to you and to (X)your seed. 14 And your seed will also be like (Y)the dust of the earth, and you will [g]spread out (Z)to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south; and (AA)in you and in your seed all the families of the earth shall be blessed. 15 Behold, (AB)I am with you and (AC)will keep you wherever you go. And (AD)I will bring you back to this land; for (AE)I will not forsake you until I have done what I have [h]promised you.” 16 Then Jacob (AF)awoke from his sleep and said, “(AG)Surely Yahweh is in this place, and I did not know it.” 17 And he was afraid and said, “(AH)How fearsome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.”

18 So Jacob rose early in the morning and took (AI)the stone that he had put [i]under his head and set it up as a pillar and poured oil on its top. 19 And he called the name of that place [j](AJ)Bethel; however, [k]previously the name of the city had been (AK)Luz. 20 Then Jacob (AL)made a vow, saying, “(AM)If God will be with me and will keep me on this journey on which I am going, and will give me [l](AN)food to eat and garments to wear, 21 and (AO)I return to my father’s house in peace, (AP)then Yahweh will be my God. 22 Now this stone, which I have set up as a pillar, (AQ)will be God’s house, and (AR)of all that You give me I will surely give a tenth to You.”

Matthew 27

Judas’ Remorse

27 (A)Now when morning came, all the chief priests and the elders of the people took counsel together against Jesus to put Him to death; and they bound Him, and led Him away and (B)delivered Him to (C)Pilate the governor.

Then when (D)Judas, who had betrayed Him, saw that He had been condemned, he felt remorse and returned (E)the [a]thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, saying, “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.” But they said, “What is that to us? (F)See to that yourself!” And he threw the pieces of silver into (G)the [b]sanctuary and departed; and (H)he went away and hanged himself. And the chief priests took the pieces of silver and said, “It is not lawful to put them into the temple treasury, since it is the price of blood.” And taking counsel together, they bought [c]with the money the Potter’s Field as a burial place for strangers. (I)For this reason that field has been called the Field of Blood to this day. Then that which was spoken through Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled, saying, “(J)And [d]they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of the one whose price had been set by the sons of Israel; 10 (K)and [e]they gave them for the Potters Field, as the [f]Lord directed me.”

Jesus Before Pilate

11 (L)Now Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor questioned Him, saying, “Are You the (M)King of the Jews?” And Jesus said to him, (N)You yourself say it.” 12 And while He was being accused by the chief priests and elders, (O)He did not answer. 13 Then Pilate *said to Him, “Do You not hear how many things they testify against You?” 14 And (P)He did not answer him with regard to even a single [g]charge, so the governor marveled greatly.

15 (Q)Now at the feast the governor was accustomed to release for the crowd any one prisoner whom they wanted. 16 And at that time they were holding a notorious prisoner, called Barabbas. 17 So when the people gathered together, Pilate said to them, “Whom do you want me to release for you? [h]Barabbas, or Jesus (R)who is called [i]Christ?” 18 For he knew that because of envy they had delivered Him over.

19 (S)Now while he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent him a message, saying, “Have nothing to do with that (T)righteous Man; for [j]last night I suffered greatly (U)in a dream because of Him.” 20 But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowds to (V)ask for Barabbas and to put Jesus to death. 21 But the governor answered and said to them, “Which of the two do you want me to release for you?” And they said, “Barabbas.” 22 Pilate *said to them, “Then, what shall I do with Jesus (W)who is called [k]Christ?” They all *said, “Let Him be crucified!” 23 And he said, “Why, what evil did He do?” But they were crying out all the more, saying, “Let Him be crucified!”

24 Now when Pilate saw that he was accomplishing nothing, but rather that (X)a riot was starting, he took water and (Y)washed his hands in front of the crowd, saying, “I am innocent of (Z)this man’s blood; (AA)see to that yourselves.” 25 And all the people answered and said, “(AB)His blood be on us and on our children!” 26 Then he released Barabbas [l]for them; but after having Jesus (AC)scourged, he delivered Him over to be crucified.

Jesus Is Mocked

27 (AD)Then when the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into (AE)the [m]Praetorium, they gathered the whole Roman [n](AF)cohort around Him. 28 And they stripped Him and (AG)put a scarlet robe on Him. 29 (AH)And after twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and a [o]reed in His right hand; and they knelt down before Him and mocked Him, saying, “(AI)Hail, King of the Jews!” 30 (AJ)And they spat on Him, and took the reed and began to beat Him on the head. 31 (AK)When they had mocked Him, they took the scarlet robe off Him and put His own garments back on Him, and led Him away to crucify Him.

32 (AL)And as they were coming out, they found a man of (AM)Cyrene named Simon, [p]whom they pressed into service to bear His cross.

The Crucifixion

33 (AN)And when they came to a place called (AO)Golgotha, which means Place of a Skull, 34 (AP)they gave Him (AQ)wine to drink mixed with gall; and after tasting it, He did not want to drink.

35 And when they had crucified Him, (AR)they divided up His garments among themselves by casting [q]lots. 36 And sitting down, they began to (AS)keep watch over Him there. 37 And above His head they put up the charge against Him [r]which read, “(AT)THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.”

38 At that time two robbers *were crucified with Him, one on the right and one on the left. 39 And those passing by were blaspheming Him, (AU)shaking their heads 40 and saying, “(AV)You who are going to destroy the sanctuary and rebuild it in three days, save Yourself! (AW)If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross.” 41 In the same way the chief priests also, along with the scribes and elders, were mocking Him and saying, 42 (AX)He saved others; [s]He cannot save Himself. (AY)He is the King of Israel; let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe in Him. 43 (AZ)He trusts in God; let God rescue Him now, if He [t]delights in Him; for He said, ‘I am the Son of God.’” 44 (BA)And the robbers who had been crucified with Him were also insulting Him with the same words.

45 (BB)Now from the [u]sixth hour darkness [v]fell upon all the land until the [w]ninth hour. 46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, (BC)Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” that is, My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” 47 And some of those who were standing there, when they heard it, began saying, “This man is calling for Elijah.” 48 (BD)And immediately one of them ran, and taking a sponge, he filled it with sour wine and put it on a reed, and gave Him a drink. 49 But the rest of them were saying, “[x]Let us see whether Elijah will come to save Him[y].” 50 And Jesus (BE)cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit. 51 (BF)And behold, (BG)the [z]veil of the sanctuary was torn in two from top to bottom; and (BH)the earth shook and the rocks were split. 52 And the tombs were opened, and many bodies of the [aa]saints who had (BI)fallen asleep were raised; 53 and coming out of the tombs after His resurrection they entered (BJ)the holy city and appeared to many. 54 (BK)Now the centurion, and those who were with him (BL)keeping guard over Jesus, when they saw (BM)the earthquake and the things that were happening, became very frightened and said, “Truly this was (BN)God’s Son!”

55 (BO)And many women were there looking on from a distance, who had followed Jesus from Galilee while [ab](BP)ministering to Him. 56 Among them was (BQ)Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and (BR)the mother of the sons of Zebedee.

Jesus Is Buried

57 (BS)Now when it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who himself had also become a disciple of Jesus. 58 This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate ordered it to be given to him. 59 And Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, 60 and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock; and he rolled (BT)a large stone against the entrance of the tomb and went away. 61 And (BU)Mary Magdalene was there, and the other Mary, sitting opposite the grave.

62 Now on the next day, [ac]the day after (BV)the [ad]Preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered together with Pilate, 63 and said, “Sir, we remember that when He was still alive that deceiver said, ‘(BW)After three days I am to rise again.’ 64 Therefore, order for the grave to be made secure until the third day, lest His disciples come and steal Him away and say to the people, ‘He has risen from the dead,’ and the last deception will be worse than the first.” 65 Pilate said to them, “You have a (BX)guard; go, make it as secure as you know how.” 66 And they went and made the grave secure, and along with (BY)the guard they set a (BZ)seal on (CA)the stone.

Esther 4

Esther Writhes in Anguish

Now Mordecai came to know of (A)all that had been done. And [a]he tore his clothes, put on sackcloth and ashes, and went out into the midst of the city and cried out loudly and bitterly. And he went as far as the king’s gate, for no one was to enter the king’s gate clothed in sackcloth. Now in each and every province where the word and law of the king reached, there was great mourning among the Jews, with (B)fasting, weeping, and wailing; and many made their bed in sackcloth and ashes.

Then Esther’s young women and her eunuchs came and told her, and the queen writhed in great anguish. And she sent garments to clothe Mordecai and to remove his sackcloth from upon him, but he did not accept them. Then Esther summoned Hathach from the king’s eunuchs, whom [b]the king had appointed to attend her, and commanded him to go to Mordecai to know what this was and why it was. So Hathach went out to Mordecai to the city square in front of the king’s gate. And Mordecai told him all that had happened to him, and (C)the exact amount of silver that Haman had promised to pay to the king’s treasuries to cause the Jews to perish. He also gave him (D)a copy of the written law which had been given in Susa for their destruction, in order to show Esther and to tell her and to command her to go in to the king to implore his favor and to seek him out for her people.

Then Hathach came back and told Mordecai’s words to Esther. 10 Then Esther spoke to Hathach and commanded him to reply to Mordecai: 11 “All the king’s servants and the people of the king’s provinces know that for any man or woman who (E)comes to the king to the inner court who is not summoned, (F)he has but one law, that he be put to death, unless the king holds out (G)to him the golden scepter so that he may live. And I have not been summoned to come to the king for these thirty days.” 12 So they told Esther’s words to Mordecai.

13 Then Mordecai said for them to respond to Esther, “Do not imagine that you in the king’s [c]house can escape any more than all the Jews. 14 For if you remain silent at this time, relief and (H)deliverance will arise for the Jews from another place, and you and your father’s house will perish. And who knows whether you have not reached royalty for such a time as this?”

Esther and the Jews Fast

15 Then Esther said for them to respond to Mordecai, 16 “Go, gather all the Jews who are found in Susa, and fast for me; (I)do not eat or drink for (J)three days, night or day. I and my young women also will fast in the same way. And thus I will go in to the king, which is not according to the law; and if I perish, I perish.” 17 So Mordecai went away and did just as Esther had commanded him.

Acts 27

Paul Is Sent to Rome

27 Now when it was decided that (A)we (B)would sail for (C)Italy, they proceeded to deliver Paul and some other prisoners to a centurion of the Augustan [a](D)cohort named Julius. And getting aboard an Adramyttian ship, which was about to sail to the regions along the coast of [b](E)Asia, we set sail accompanied by (F)Aristarchus, a (G)Macedonian of (H)Thessalonica. The next day we put in at (I)Sidon, and Julius (J)treated Paul with consideration and (K)allowed him to go to his friends and receive care. And from there we set sail and sailed under the shelter of (L)Cyprus because (M)the winds were against us. And when we had sailed through the sea along the coast of (N)Cilicia and (O)Pamphylia, we landed at Myra in Lycia. There the centurion found an (P)Alexandrian ship sailing for (Q)Italy, and he put us aboard it. And when we had sailed slowly for a good many days, and with difficulty had arrived off Cnidus, (R)since the wind did not permit us to go farther, we sailed under the shelter of (S)Crete, off Salmone; and with difficulty, we (T)sailed past it and came to a place called Fair Havens, near which was the city of Lasea.

And when considerable time had passed and the voyage was now dangerous, since even (U)the [c]Fast was already over, Paul began to advise them, 10 and said to them, “Men, I perceive that the voyage will certainly be with (V)damage and great loss, not only of the cargo and the ship, but also of our lives.” 11 But the centurion was being more persuaded by the (W)pilot and the [d]captain of the ship than by what was being said by Paul. 12 And because the harbor was not suitable for wintering, the majority reached a decision to set sail from there, if somehow they could arrive at Phoenix, a harbor of (X)Crete facing southwest and northwest, to spend the winter there.

13 And when a moderate [e]south wind came up, thinking that they had attained their purpose, they weighed anchor and began (Y)sailing along [f]the shore of (Z)Crete.

The Storm at Sea

14 But before very long there (AA)rushed down from [g]the land a violent wind, called [h]Euraquilo; 15 and when the ship was caught in it and could not face the wind, we gave way to it and let ourselves be carried along. 16 And running under the shelter of a small island called Clauda, we were scarcely able to get the ship’s [i]boat under control. 17 After they had hoisted it up, they used [j]supporting cables in undergirding the ship. Fearing that they might (AB)run aground on the shallows of Syrtis, they let down the [k]sea anchor and in this way let themselves be carried along. 18 And the next day as we were being violently storm-tossed, [l]they began to (AC)jettison the cargo; 19 and on the third day they cast the ship’s tackle overboard with their own hands. 20 And since neither sun nor stars appeared for many days, and no small storm was assailing us, from then on all hope of our being saved was gradually abandoned.

21 And [m]when they had gone a long time without food, then Paul stood up in their midst and said, “(AD)Men, you ought to have [n]followed my advice to not set sail from (AE)Crete and to [o]avoid this (AF)damage and loss. 22 And now I advise you to (AG)be cheerful, for there will be no loss of life among you, but only of the ship. 23 For this very night (AH)an angel of the God to whom I belong and (AI)whom I serve (AJ)stood before me, 24 saying, ‘Do not be afraid, Paul; (AK)you must stand before Caesar; and behold, God has granted you (AL)all those who are sailing with you.’ 25 Therefore, (AM)be cheerful, men, for I believe God that [p]it will turn out exactly as I have been told. 26 But we must (AN)run aground on some (AO)island.”

27 But when the fourteenth night came, as we were being carried about in the Adriatic Sea, about midnight the sailors began to suspect that some land was approaching them. 28 And when they took soundings, they found it to be [q]twenty fathoms; and a little farther on they took another sounding and found it to be [r]fifteen fathoms. 29 And fearing that we might (AP)run aground somewhere on the [s]rocks, they cast four anchors from the stern and were praying for daybreak. 30 But as the sailors were trying to escape from the ship and had let down (AQ)the ship’s boat into the sea, on the pretense of intending to lay out anchors from the bow, 31 Paul said to the centurion and to the soldiers, “Unless these men remain in the ship, you yourselves cannot [t]be saved.” 32 Then the soldiers cut away the (AR)ropes of the ship’s boat and let it fall away.

33 Until the day was about to dawn, Paul was encouraging them all to take some food, saying, “Today is the fourteenth day that you have been constantly watching and going without eating, having taken nothing. 34 Therefore I encourage you to take some food, for this is for your [u]salvation, for (AS)not a hair from the head of any of you will perish.” 35 And having said these things, he took bread and (AT)gave thanks to God in the presence of all. And he broke it and began to eat. 36 And all (AU)of them became cheerful and they themselves also took food. 37 And all of us in the ship were 276 [v](AV)persons. 38 And when they had eaten enough, they began to lighten the ship by (AW)throwing out the wheat into the sea.

The Shipwreck

39 Now when day came, (AX)they [w]could not recognize the land; but they were noticing a bay with a beach, and they were resolving to drive the ship onto it if they could. 40 And casting off (AY)the anchors, they left them in the sea while at the same time they were loosening the ropes of the rudders. And hoisting the foresail to the wind, they were heading for the beach. 41 But striking a [x]reef where two seas met, they ran the vessel aground; and the bow stuck fast and remained immovable, but the stern began to be broken up by the force of the waves. 42 Now the soldiers’ plan was to (AZ)kill the prisoners, so that none of them would swim away and escape; 43 but the centurion, (BA)wanting to bring Paul safely through, kept them from their intention, and ordered that those who could swim should [y]jump overboard first and get to land, 44 and the rest should follow, some on planks, and others on various things from the ship. And so it happened that (BB)they all were brought safely to land.
