Numbers 29

Gifts at Supper of Horns

29 ‘You will have a holy gathering on the first day of the seventh month. You must do no hard work. It is a day for you to blow the horns. Give as a pleasing smell to the Lord a burnt gift of one bull, one ram, and seven male lambs one year old, all are to be perfect. And give fine flour mixed with oil for their grain gift. Give three-tenths part of a basket for the bull, two-tenths part for the ram, and one-tenth part for each of the seven lambs. Then give one male goat for a sin gift, to pay for your sins. These gifts should be besides the burnt gift of the new moon, and its grain gift, and each day’s burnt gift and its grain gift, and their drink gifts. It must be done by the Law, for a pleasing smell, a gift by fire to the Lord.

Gifts on the Day to Pay for Sins

‘You will have a holy gathering on the tenth day of this seventh month, and be without pride. You must not do any work. You will give to the Lord as a pleasing smell a burnt gift of one bull, one ram, and seven male lambs one year old, all are to be perfect. And give fine flour mixed with oil for their grain gift. Give three-tenths part of a basket for the bull, two-tenths part for the one ram, 10 and a tenth part for each of the seven lambs. 11 Then give one male goat for a sin gift, besides the sin gift to pay for sins, each day’s burnt gift and its grain gift, and their drink gifts.

It will be a gift by fire, a pleasing smell to the Lord. 37 Give their grain gifts and drink gifts for the bull, the ram and lambs, for their number, by the Law. 38 Then give one male goat for a sin gift, besides each day’s burnt gift and its grain gift and drink gift.

39 ‘Give these to the Lord at the times given, besides your promised gifts and your free-will gifts. They will be for your burnt gifts, your grain gifts, your drink gifts and for your peace gifts.’” 40 Moses said to the people of Israel all that the Lord had told him.

Psalm 73

The Good and the Sinful

73 For sure God is good to Israel, to those who are pure in heart. But as for me, my feet came close to falling. My steps had almost tripped. For I was jealous of the proud when I saw that all was going well with the sinful. For they suffer no pain in their death, and their body is fat. They do not have the troubles of other men or suffer like other men. So they wear pride around their neck. Fighting covers them like a coat. They are so fat that their eyes are pushed out. The crazy thoughts of their hearts run wild. They laugh at the truth, and speak sinful things about making it hard for others. They speak from a high place. They say bad things against heaven, and their tongue walks through the earth.

10 And so his people return to this place and drink water from a full cup. 11 They say, “How does God know? Is there much learning with the Most High?”

12 See, this is what the sinful are like. They always have it easy and their riches grow. 13 For no good reason I have kept my heart pure and have not sinned. 14 For I have suffered all day long. I have been punished every morning.

15 I would not have been true to Your children if I had spoken this way. 16 It was too hard for me when I tried to understand this, 17 until I went into the holy place of God. Then I understood their end. 18 For sure, You set the sinful in places where there is danger at every step. You throw them down to be destroyed. 19 How they are destroyed right away! They come to an end with much fear. 20 Like a dream when one wakes up, so You will hate what they look like when You rise up, O Lord.

21 My heart was troubled and I was hurt inside. 22 I was without reason and did not know better. I was like an animal before You. 23 Yet I am always with You. You hold me by my right hand. 24 You will lead me by telling me what I should do. And after this, You will bring me into shining-greatness.

25 Whom have I in heaven but You? I want nothing more on earth, but You. 26 My body and my heart may grow weak, but God is the strength of my heart and all I need forever. 27 For, see, those who are far from You will be lost from You forever. You have destroyed all those who are not faithful to You. 28 But as for me, it is good to be near God. I have made the Lord God my safe place. So I may tell of all the things You have done.

Isaiah 21

Babylon to Be Destroyed

21 The special word about the place by the sea where no people live: As wind-storms in the Negev go rushing through, it comes from the desert, from a bad land. A hard special dream has been shown to me. The one who hurts still goes on hurting others, and the destroyer still destroys. Go up, Elam. Gather your armies around, Media. I will bring an end to all the crying she has caused. For this reason my body is full of suffering. Pains have taken hold of me like the pains of a woman giving birth. I am so troubled that I cannot hear. I am so afraid that I cannot see. My mind turns. Fear has come over me. The evening I have waited so long for has been turned into a time of shaking with fear. They set the tables. They spread out the cloth. They eat and drink. Rise up, captains, oil the battle-coverings! For the Lord says to me, “Go, set a man to keep watch. Let him tell what he sees. When he sees men riding on horses, two by two, and men on donkeys, and men on camels, let him be very careful to watch.” Then the watchman called out like a lion, “O Lord, I stand watching from the watch-tower at all times during the day. And I stand there every night. Now see, here comes an army of men riding on horses, two by two.” One answered and said, “Fallen, fallen is Babylon. All the objects of her gods are broken to pieces on the ground.” 10 O my people of Israel, you were beaten and crushed like grain! What I have heard from the Lord of All, the God of Israel, I make known to you.

Word about Edom

11 The special word about Edom: One is calling to me from Seir, “Watchman, what is the time of night? Watchman, what is the time of night?” 12 The watchman says, “The morning comes, but also the night. If you have questions to ask, ask them, and come back again.”

Word about Arabia

13 The special word about Arabia: You must stay the night among the trees of Arabia, O traveling people of Dedanim. 14 Bring water for the thirsty. O people of the land of Tema, give bread to the one who is running from trouble. 15 They are running from swords, from lifted swords, from bows that are ready to shoot, and from the trouble of battle. 16 For the Lord said to me, “In a year, as the servant would count it, all the greatness of Kedar will come to an end. 17 And the rest of the men who use the bow, the strong men of the sons of Kedar, will be few. For the Lord God of Israel has spoken.”

2 Peter 2

Watch for False Teachers

But there were false teachers among the people. And there will be false teachers among you also. These people will work in secret ways to bring false teaching to you. They will turn against Christ Who bought them with His blood. They bring fast death on themselves. Many people will follow their wrong ways. Because of what they do, people will speak bad things against the way of truth. They will tell lies and false stories so they can use you to get things for themselves. But God judged them long ago and their death is on the way.

God did not hold back from punishing the angels who sinned, but sent them down to hell. They are to be kept there in the deep hole of darkness until they stand before Him Who judges them. God did not hold back from punishing the people of the world who sinned long ago. He brought the flood on the world of sinners. But Noah was a preacher of right living. He and his family of seven were the only ones God saved. God said that the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah were guilty, and He destroyed them with fire. This was to show people who did not worship God what would happen to them. Lot was taken away from Sodom because he was right with God. He had been troubled by the sins that bad men did in wild living. He saw and heard how the people around him broke the Law. Everyday his own soul which was right with God was troubled because of their sinful ways. But the Lord knows how to help men who are right with God when they are tempted. He also knows how to keep the sinners suffering for their wrong-doing until the day they stand before God Who will judge them. 10 This is true about those who keep on wanting to please their own bodies in sinful desires and those who will not obey laws. They want to please themselves and are not afraid when they laugh and say bad things about the powers in heaven. 11 Angels are greater in strength and power than they. But angels do not speak against these powers before the Lord.

12 Men like this are like animals who are not able to think but are born to be caught and killed. They speak bad words against that which they do not understand. They will die in their own sinful ways. 13 This is the pay they will suffer for their sinful lives. They are not ashamed when they sin in the daylight. They are sores and dirty spots among you while they eat and drink big meals with you. 14 Their eyes are full of sex sins. They never have enough sin. They get weak people to go along with them. Their hearts are always wanting something. They are people who will end up in hell because 15 they have left the right way and have gone the wrong way. They have followed the way of Balaam, who was the son of Beor. He loved the money he got for his sin. 16 But he was stopped in his sin. A donkey spoke to him with a man’s voice. It stopped this early preacher from going on in his crazy way.

17 Such people are like wells without water. They are like clouds before a storm. The darkest place below has been kept for them. 18 They speak big-sounding words which show they are proud. They get men who are trying to keep away from sinful men to give in to the sinful desires of the flesh. 19 They promise that these men will be free. But they themselves are chained to sin. For a man is chained to anything that has power over him.

20 There are men who have been made free from the sins of the world by learning to know the Lord Jesus Christ, the One Who saves. But if they do these sins again, and are not able to keep from doing them, they are worse than they were before. 21 After knowing the holy Law that was given to them, they turned from it. It would have been better for them if they had not known how to be right with God. 22 They are like the wise saying, “A dog turns back to what he has thrown up.” (A) And, “A pig that has been washed goes back to roll in the mud.”
