2 Chronicles 7

The Temple Is Given to the Lord

When Solomon finished praying, fire came down from the sky and burned up the burnt offering and the sacrifices. The Lord’s glory filled the Temple. The priests could not enter the Temple of the Lord, because the Lord’s glory filled it. When all the people of Israel saw the fire come down from heaven and the Lord’s glory on the Temple, they bowed down on the pavement with their faces to the ground. They worshiped and thanked the Lord, saying,

“He is good;
    his love continues forever.”

Then King Solomon and all the people offered sacrifices to the Lord. King Solomon offered a sacrifice of twenty-two thousand cattle and one hundred twenty thousand sheep. So the king and all the people gave the Temple to God. The priests stood ready to do their work. The Levites also stood with the instruments of the Lord’s music that King David had made for praising the Lord. The priests and Levites were saying, “His love continues forever.” The priests, who stood across from the Levites, blew their trumpets, and all the Israelites were standing.

Solomon made holy the middle part of the courtyard, which is in front of the Temple of the Lord. There he offered whole burnt offerings and the fat of the fellowship offerings. He offered them in the courtyard, because the bronze altar he had made could not hold the burnt offerings, grain offerings, and fat.

Solomon and all the Israelites celebrated the festival for seven days. There were many people, and they came from as far away as Lebo Hamath and the brook of Egypt. For seven days they celebrated giving the altar for the worship of God. Then they celebrated the festival for seven days. On the eighth day they had a meeting. 10 On the twenty-third day of the seventh month Solomon sent the people home, full of joy. They were happy because the Lord had been so good to David, Solomon, and his people Israel.

The Lord Appears to Solomon

11 Solomon finished the Temple of the Lord and his royal palace. He had success in doing everything he planned in the Temple of the Lord and his own palace. 12 Then the Lord appeared to Solomon at night and said to him, “I have heard your prayer and have chosen this place for myself to be a Temple for sacrifices.

13 “I may stop the sky from sending rain. I may command the locusts to destroy the land. I may send sicknesses to my people. 14 Then if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves, if they will pray and seek me and stop their evil ways, I will hear them from heaven. I will forgive their sin, and I will heal their land. 15 Now I will see them, and I will listen to the prayers prayed in this place. 16 I have chosen this Temple and made it holy. So I will be worshiped there forever. Yes, I will always watch over it and love it.

17 “But you must serve me as your father David did. You must obey all I have commanded and keep my laws and rules. 18 If you do, I will make your kingdom strong. This is the agreement I made with your father David, saying, ‘Someone from your family will always rule in Israel.’

19 “But you must follow me and obey the laws and commands I have given you. You must not serve or worship other gods. 20 If you do, I will take the Israelites out of my land, the land I have given them, and I will leave this Temple that I have made holy. All the nations will make fun of it and speak evil about it. 21 This Temple is honored now, but then, everyone who passes by will be shocked. They will ask, ‘Why did the Lord do this terrible thing to this land and this Temple?’ 22 People will answer, ‘This happened because they left the Lord, the God of their ancestors, the God who brought them out of Egypt. They decided to follow other gods and worshiped and served them, so he brought all this disaster on them.’”

2 John

From the Elder.[a]

To the chosen lady[b] and her children:

I love all of you in the truth,[c] and all those who know the truth love you. We love you because of the truth that lives in us and will be with us forever.

Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and his Son, Jesus Christ, will be with us in truth and love.

I was very happy to learn that some of your children are following the way of truth, as the Father commanded us. And now, dear lady, this is not a new command but is the same command we have had from the beginning. I ask you that we all love each other. And love means living the way God commanded us to live. As you have heard from the beginning, his command is this: Live a life of love.

Many false teachers are in the world now who do not confess that Jesus Christ came to earth as a human. Anyone who does not confess this is a false teacher and an enemy of Christ. Be careful yourselves that you do not lose everything you[d] have worked for, but that you receive your full reward.

Anyone who goes beyond Christ’s teaching and does not continue to follow only his teaching does not have God. But whoever continues to follow the teaching of Christ has both the Father and the Son. 10 If someone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not welcome or accept that person into your house. 11 If you welcome such a person, you share in the evil work.

12 I have many things to write to you, but I do not want to use paper and ink. Instead, I hope to come to you and talk face to face so we can be full of joy. 13 The children of your chosen sister[e] greet you.

Habakkuk 2

I will stand like a guard to watch
    and place myself at the tower.
I will wait to see what he will say to me;
    I will wait to learn how God will answer my complaint.

The Lord Answers

The Lord answered me:

“Write down the vision;
    write it clearly on clay tablets
    so whoever reads it can run to tell others.
It is not yet time for the message to come true,
    but that time is coming soon;
    the message will come true.
It may seem like a long time,
    but be patient and wait for it,
because it will surely come;
    it will not be delayed.
The evil nation is very proud of itself;
    it is not living as it should.
    But those who are right with God will live by faith.

“Just as wine can trick a person,
    those who are too proud will not last,
because their desire is like a grave’s desire for death,
    and like death they always want more.
They gather other nations for themselves
    and collect for themselves all the countries.
But all the nations the Babylonians have hurt will laugh at them.
    They will make fun of the Babylonians
and say, ‘How terrible it will be for the one that steals many things.
    How long will that nation get rich by forcing others to pay them?’

“One day the people from whom you have taken money will turn against you.
    They will realize what is happening and make you shake with fear.
    Then they will take everything you have.
Because you have stolen from many nations,
    those who are left will take much from you.
This is because you have killed many people,
    destroying countries and cities and everyone in them.

“How terrible it will be for the nation that becomes rich by doing wrong,
    thinking they will live in a safe place
    and escape harm.
10 Because you have made plans to destroy many people,
    you have made your own houses ashamed of you.
    Because of it, you will lose your lives.
11 The stones of the walls will cry out against you,
    and the boards that support the roof will agree that you are wrong.

12 “How terrible it will be for the nation that kills people to build a city,
    that wrongs others to start a town.
13 The Lord All-Powerful will send fire
    to destroy what those people have built;
    all the nations’ work will be for nothing.
14 Then, just as water covers the sea,
    people everywhere will know the Lord’s glory.

15 “How terrible for the nation that makes its neighbors drink,
    pouring from the jug of wine until they are drunk
    so that it can look at their naked bodies.
16 You Babylonians will be filled with disgrace, not respect.
    It’s your turn to drink and fall to the ground like a drunk person.
The cup of anger from the Lord’s right hand is coming around to you.
    You will receive disgrace, not respect.
17 You hurt many people in Lebanon,
    but now you will be hurt.
You killed many animals there,
    and now you must be afraid
because of what you did
    to that land, those cities, and the people who lived in them.

The Message About Idols

18 “An idol does no good, because a human made it;
    it is only a statue that teaches lies.
The one who made it expects his own work to help him,
    but he makes idols that can’t even speak!
19 How terrible it will be for the one who says to a wooden statue, ‘Come to life!’
    How terrible it will be for the one who says to a silent stone, ‘Get up!’
It cannot tell you what to do.
    It is only a statue covered with gold and silver;
    there is no life in it.
20 The Lord is in his Holy Temple;
    all the earth should be silent in his presence.”

Luke 21

True Giving

21 As Jesus looked up, he saw some rich people putting their gifts into the Temple money box.[a] Then he saw a poor widow putting two small copper coins into the box. He said, “I tell you the truth, this poor widow gave more than all those rich people. They gave only what they did not need. This woman is very poor, but she gave all she had to live on.”

The Temple Will Be Destroyed

Some people were talking about the Temple and how it was decorated with beautiful stones and gifts offered to God.

But Jesus said, “As for these things you are looking at, the time will come when not one stone will be left on another. Every stone will be thrown down.”

They asked Jesus, “Teacher, when will these things happen? What will be the sign that they are about to take place?”

Jesus said, “Be careful so you are not fooled. Many people will come in my name, saying, ‘I am the One’ and, ‘The time has come!’ But don’t follow them. When you hear about wars and riots, don’t be afraid, because these things must happen first, but the end will come later.”

10 Then he said to them, “Nations will fight against other nations, and kingdoms against other kingdoms. 11 In various places there will be great earthquakes, sicknesses, and a lack of food. Fearful events and great signs will come from heaven.

12 “But before all these things happen, people will arrest you and treat you cruelly. They will judge you in their synagogues and put you in jail and force you to stand before kings and governors, because you follow me. 13 But this will give you an opportunity to tell about me. 14 Make up your minds not to worry ahead of time about what you will say. 15 I will give you the wisdom to say things that none of your enemies will be able to stand against or prove wrong. 16 Even your parents, brothers, relatives, and friends will turn against you, and they will kill some of you. 17 All people will hate you because you follow me. 18 But none of these things can really harm you. 19 By continuing to have faith you will save your lives.

Jerusalem Will Be Destroyed

20 “When you see armies all around Jerusalem, you will know it will soon be destroyed. 21 At that time, the people in Judea should run away to the mountains. The people in Jerusalem must get out, and those who are near the city should not go in. 22 These are the days of punishment to bring about all that is written in the Scriptures. 23 How terrible it will be for women who are pregnant or have nursing babies! Great trouble will come upon this land, and God will be angry with these people. 24 They will be killed by the sword and taken as prisoners to all nations. Jerusalem will be crushed by non-Jewish people until their time is over.

Don’t Fear

25 “There will be signs in the sun, moon, and stars. On earth, nations will be afraid and confused because of the roar and fury of the sea. 26 People will be so afraid they will faint, wondering what is happening to the world, because the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 27 Then people will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. 28 When these things begin to happen, look up and hold your heads high, because the time when God will free you is near!”

Jesus’ Words Will Live Forever

29 Then Jesus told this story: “Look at the fig tree and all the other trees. 30 When their leaves appear, you know that summer is near. 31 In the same way, when you see these things happening, you will know that God’s kingdom is near.

32 “I tell you the truth, all these things will happen while the people of this time are still living. 33 Earth and sky will be destroyed, but the words I have spoken will never be destroyed.

Be Ready All the Time

34 “Be careful not to spend your time feasting, drinking, or worrying about worldly things. If you do, that day might come on you suddenly, 35 like a trap on all people on earth. 36 So be ready all the time. Pray that you will be strong enough to escape all these things that will happen and that you will be able to stand before the Son of Man.”

37 During the day, Jesus taught the people in the Temple, and at night he went out of the city and stayed on the Mount of Olives. 38 Every morning all the people got up early to go to the Temple to listen to him.
