Numbers 21

Destruction of Canaanite Cities

21 Then the Canaanite, the king of (A)Arad, who lived in the [a]Negev, heard that Israel was coming by the way of [b]Atharim, and he fought against Israel and took some of them captive. So (B)Israel made a vow to Yahweh and said, “If You will indeed give this people into my hand, then I will devote their cities to destruction.” Then Yahweh heard the voice of Israel and gave the Canaanites over; so they devoted them and their cities to destruction. Thus the name of the place was called [c](C)Hormah.

Then they set out from Mount Hor by the way to the [d]Red Sea, to (D)go around the land of Edom; and the [e]people became impatient on the way. And the people spoke against God and against Moses, “(E)Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no [f]food and no water, and [g](F)we loathe this miserable food.”

The Bronze Serpent

(G)So Yahweh sent fiery serpents among the people, and (H)they bit the people so that (I)many people of Israel died. (J)Then the people came to Moses and said, “We have sinned because we have spoken against Yahweh and against you; (K)pray to Yahweh, that He may remove the serpents from us.” And Moses prayed for the people. Then Yahweh said to Moses, “[h]Make a (L)fiery serpent and set it on a standard; and it will be that everyone who is bitten and looks at it, will live.” And Moses made a (M)bronze serpent and set it on the standard; and it happened, that if a serpent bit any man, when he looked to the bronze serpent, he lived.

10 (N)Then the sons of Israel set out and camped in Oboth. 11 They then set out from Oboth and camped at Iye-abarim, in the wilderness which is opposite Moab, east toward the sunrise. 12 (O)From there they set out and camped in [i]Wadi Zered. 13 From there they set out and camped on the other side of the Arnon, which is in the wilderness that comes out of the border of the Amorites, (P)for the Arnon is the border of Moab, between Moab and the Amorites. 14 Therefore it is said in the Book of the Wars of Yahweh,

“Waheb in Suphah,
And the wadis of the Arnon,
15 And the slope of the wadis
That extends to the site of (Q)Ar,
And leans to the border of Moab.”

16 (R)And from there they continued to [j]Beer, that is the well where Yahweh said to Moses, “Assemble the people, that I may give them water.”

17 (S)Then Israel sang this song:

“Spring up, O well! Sing to it!
18 The well, which the leaders dug,
Which the nobles of the people carved out,
With the scepter and with their staffs.”

And from the wilderness they continued to Mattanah, 19 and from Mattanah to Nahaliel, and from Nahaliel to Bamoth, 20 and from Bamoth to the valley that is in the land of Moab, at the top of Pisgah which overlooks the [k]wasteland.

Sihon and Og Struck Down

21 (T)Then Israel sent messengers to Sihon, king of the Amorites, saying, 22 (U)Let me pass through your land. We will not turn off into field or vineyard; we will not drink water from wells. We will go by the king’s highway until we have passed through your border.” 23 (V)But Sihon would not allow Israel to pass through his border. So Sihon gathered all his people and went out to meet Israel in the wilderness and came to (W)Jahaz and fought against Israel. 24 Then (X)Israel [l]struck him with the edge of the sword and took possession of his land from the Arnon to the Jabbok, as far as the sons of Ammon; for the (Y)border of the sons of Ammon was [m]Jazer. 25 And Israel took all these cities, and (Z)Israel lived in all the cities of the Amorites, in Heshbon, and in all her [n]towns. 26 For Heshbon was the city of Sihon, king of the Amorites. Now it was he who had fought against the former king of Moab and had taken all his land out of his hand, as far as the Arnon. 27 Therefore those who use proverbs say,

“Come to Heshbon! Let it be built!
So let the city of Sihon be established.
28 (AA)For a fire went forth from Heshbon,
A flame from the town of Sihon;
It devoured (AB)Ar of Moab,
The [o](AC)dominant [p]heights of the Arnon.
29 (AD)Woe to you, O Moab!
You perish, O people of (AE)Chemosh!
(AF)He has given his sons as fugitives,
(AG)And his daughters into captivity,
To an Amorite king, Sihon.
30 But we have cast them down,
Heshbon perishes as far as (AH)Dibon,
And we have made desolate even to Nophah,
Which reaches to Medeba.”

31 Thus Israel lived in the land of the Amorites. 32 And Moses sent to spy out (AI)Jazer, and they captured its towns and dispossessed the Amorites who were there.

33 (AJ)Then they turned and went up by the way of Bashan, and Og the king of Bashan went out to meet them, he and all his people for battle at (AK)Edrei. 34 But Yahweh said to Moses, “(AL)Do not fear him, for I have given him into your hand, and all his people and his land; and you shall do to him as you did to Sihon, king of the Amorites, who lived at Heshbon.” 35 So (AM)they struck down him and his sons and all his people, until [q]there was no survivor remaining for him; and they possessed his land.

Psalm 60-61

Through God We Shall Do Valiantly

For the choir director. According to [a]Shushan Eduth. A [b]Mikhtam of David. For teaching. [c]When he struggled with Aram-naharaim and with Aram-zobah, and Joab returned, and smote twelve thousand of Edom in the Valley of Salt.

60 O God, (A)You have rejected us. You have [d](B)broken us;
You have been (C)angry; Oh, (D)restore us.
You have made the [e](E)land quake, You have split it open;
(F)Heal its breaches, for it shakes.
You have (G)caused Your people to see hardship;
You have given us [f]wine to (H)drink that causes reeling.
You have given a (I)banner to those who fear You,
[g]In order to flee to it from the bow. [h]Selah.
(J)That Your (K)beloved may be rescued,
(L)Save with Your right hand, and answer [i]us!

God has spoken in His [j](M)holiness:
“I will exult, I will portion out (N)Shechem and measure out the valley of (O)Succoth.
(P)Gilead is Mine, and Manasseh is Mine;
(Q)Ephraim also is the [k]helmet of My head;
Judah is My [l](R)scepter.
(S)Moab is My washbowl;
Over (T)Edom I shall throw My shoe;
Make a loud shout, O (U)Philistia, because of Me!”

Who will bring me into the fortified city?
Who [m]will lead me to Edom?
10 Have You Yourself, O God, not (V)rejected us?
And (W)will You, O God, not go forth with our armies?
11 Oh give us help against the adversary,
For (X)salvation [n]by man is worthless.
12 [o]Through God we shall (Y)do valiantly,
And it is He who will (Z)tread down our adversaries.

Lead Me to the Rock

For the choir director. On a stringed instrument. Of David.

61 (AA)Hear my cry of lamentation, O God;
(AB)Give heed to my prayer.
From the (AC)end of the earth I call to You when my heart is (AD)faint;
Lead me to (AE)the rock that is higher than I.
For You have been a (AF)refuge for me,
A (AG)tower of strength before the enemy.
Let me (AH)sojourn in Your tent forever;
Let me (AI)take refuge in the shelter of Your wings. [p]Selah.

For You, O God, have heard my (AJ)vows;
You have given me the inheritance of those who (AK)fear Your name.
You will (AL)add days to the king’s [q]life;
His years will be from generation to generation.
He will sit enthroned (AM)before God forever;
Appoint (AN)lovingkindness and truth that they may guard him.
So I will (AO)sing praise to Your name forever,
As I (AP)pay my vows day by day.

Isaiah 10:5-34

Yahweh’s Anger with Assyria’s Arrogance

Woe to (A)Assyria, the (B)rod of My anger
And the staff in whose hands is (C)My indignation,
I send it against a (D)godless nation
And command it against the (E)people of My fury
To capture spoil and (F)to seize plunder,
And to [a]trample them down like (G)mud in the streets.
But it (H)does not intend to act in this way,
And it does not think in its heart in this way,
Rather, what is in its heart is to destroy
And to cut off [b]many nations.
For it says, “Are not my princes [c]all kings?
Is not (I)Calno like (J)Carchemish,
Or (K)Hamath like Arpad,
Or (L)Samaria like (M)Damascus?
10 As my hand has reached to the (N)kingdoms of the idols,
Whose graven images were greater than those of Jerusalem and Samaria,
11 Shall I not [d]do to Jerusalem and her images
Just as I have done to Samaria and (O)her idols?”

12 So it will be that when the Lord has completed all His (P)work on Mount Zion and on Jerusalem, He will say, “I will [e]punish the fruit of the arrogant heart of the king of Assyria and (Q)the pomp of his eyes which are raised high.” 13 For (R)he has said,

“By the power of my hand and by my wisdom I did this,
For I have understanding;
And I (S)removed the boundaries of the peoples
And plundered their treasures,
And like a mighty man I brought down [f]their inhabitants,
14 And my hand reached for the wealth of the peoples like a (T)nest,
And as one gathers abandoned eggs, I gathered all the earth;
And there was not one that flapped its wing or opened its beak or chirped.”

15 Is the (U)axe to (V)boast itself over the one who chops with it?
Is the saw to magnify itself over the one who wields it?
That would be like (W)a rod wielding those who lift it,
Or like (X)a staff lifting him who is not wood.
16 Therefore the Lord, Yahweh of hosts, will send a (Y)wasting disease among his (Z)stout warriors;
And under his (AA)glory a fire will be kindled like a burning flame.
17 And the (AB)light of Israel will become a fire and his (AC)Holy One a flame,
And it will (AD)burn and devour his thorns and his briars in a single day.
18 And He will (AE)bring to an end the glory of his forest and of his fruitful orchard, both soul and body,
And it will be as when a sick man wastes away.
19 And the (AF)rest of the trees of his forest will be so small in number
That a child could write them down.

A Remnant Will Return

20 Now it will be in that day, that the (AG)remnant of Israel and those of the house of Jacob (AH)who have escaped, will never again rely on the one who struck them, but will truly (AI)rely on Yahweh, the Holy One of Israel.

21 A (AJ)remnant will return, the remnant of Jacob, to the (AK)mighty God.
22 For (AL)though your people, O Israel, may be like the sand of the sea,
Only a remnant within them will return;
A (AM)destructive end is decreed, overflowing with righteousness.

23 For a complete destruction, one that is decreed, (AN)Lord Yahweh of hosts will do in the midst of the whole land.

24 Therefore thus says Lord Yahweh of hosts, “O My people who inhabit (AO)Zion, (AP)do not fear the Assyrian [g]who (AQ)strikes you with the rod and lifts up his staff against you, the way Egypt did. 25 For in a very (AR)little while (AS)My indignation against you will end and My anger will be directed to their destruction.” 26 And Yahweh of hosts will (AT)waken a scourge against him like the slaughter of (AU)Midian at the rock of Oreb; and His (AV)staff will be over the sea and He will lift it up (AW)the way He did in Egypt. 27 So it will be in that day, that [h]his (AX)burden will be removed from your shoulders and his yoke from your neck, and the yoke will be broken because (AY)of fatness.

28 He has come against Aiath,
He has passed through (AZ)Migron;
At (BA)Michmash he deposited his (BB)baggage.
29 They have gone through (BC)the pass, saying,
(BD)Geba will be our lodging place.”
(BE)Ramah trembles, and (BF)Gibeah of Saul has fled away.
30 Cry aloud with your voice, O daughter of (BG)Gallim!
Pay attention, Laishah and [i]afflicted (BH)Anathoth!
31 Madmenah has fled.
The inhabitants of Gebim have sought refuge.
32 Yet today he will stand at (BI)Nob;
He (BJ)shakes his fist at the mountain of the [j](BK)daughter of Zion, the hill of Jerusalem.

33 Behold, the Lord, Yahweh of hosts, will lop off the boughs with a terrible crash;
Those also who are (BL)high in stature will be cut in pieces
And those who are lofty will be made low.
34 He will cut down the thickets of the forest with an iron axe,
And (BM)Lebanon will fall [k]by the Mighty One.

James 4

Draw Near to God

[a]What is the source of quarrels and (A)conflicts among you? [b]Is not the source your pleasures that wage (B)war in your members? You lust and do not have, so you (C)murder. You are envious and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have because you do not ask. You ask and (D)do not receive, because you ask [c]with wrong motives, so that you may spend it [d]on your pleasures. You (E)adulteresses, do you not know that friendship with (F)the world is (G)enmity toward God? (H)Therefore, whoever wishes to be a friend of the world sets himself as an enemy of God. Or do you think that the Scripture (I)speaks to no purpose: “[e]He [f]jealously desires (J)the Spirit which He has made to dwell in us”? But (K)He gives a greater grace. Therefore it says, “(L)God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” (M)Be subject therefore to God. (N)Resist the devil and he will flee from you. (O)Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. (P)Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and (Q)purify your hearts, you (R)double-minded. (S)Be miserable and mourn and cry. Let your laughter be turned into mourning and your joy to gloom. 10 (T)Humble yourselves in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you.

11 (U)Do not slander one another, (V)brothers. He who slanders a brother or (W)judges his brother, slanders (X)the law and judges the law; but if you judge the law, you are not (Y)a doer of the law but a judge of it. 12 There is only one (Z)Lawgiver and Judge, the One who is (AA)able to save and to destroy. But (AB)who are you who judge your neighbor?

Life Is a Vapor

13 (AC)Come now, you who say, “(AD)Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, and spend a year there and engage in business and make a profit.” 14 [g]Yet you do not know [h]what your life will be like tomorrow. (AE)You are a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away. 15 [i]Instead, you ought to say, “(AF)If the Lord wills, we will live and also do this or that.” 16 But as it is, you boast in your [j]arrogance. (AG)All such boasting is evil. 17 Therefore, (AH)to one who knows to do the [k]right thing and does not do it, to him it is sin.
