War with the Canaanites

21 The Canaanite king of Arad lived in the ·southern area [Negev]. When he heard that the Israelites were coming on the road to Atharim, he attacked them and captured some of them. Then the Israelites made ·this promise [a vow] to the Lord: “If you will ·help us defeat these people [L give this people into our hands], we will ·completely destroy [devote to the Lord] their cities.” The Lord listened to the Israelites, and he let them defeat the Canaanites. The Israelites ·completely destroyed [devoted to the Lord] the Canaanites and their cities, so the place was named Hormah [C “Completely Destroyed”; “Devoted to the Lord”].

The Bronze Snake

The Israelites left Mount Hor and went on the road toward the ·Red [or Reed] Sea, in order to go around the country of Edom. But the people became impatient on the way and ·grumbled at [L spoke against] God and Moses. They said, “Why did you bring us out of Egypt to die in this ·desert [wilderness]? There is no bread and no water, and we hate this terrible food!”

So the Lord sent them ·poisonous [L burning] snakes; they bit the people, and many of the ·Israelites [L people from Israel] died. The people came to Moses and said, “We sinned when we ·grumbled at [spoke against] you and the Lord. Pray that the Lord will take away these snakes.” So Moses prayed for the people.

The Lord said to Moses, “Make a bronze snake, and put it on a pole. When anyone who is bitten looks at it, that person will live.” So Moses made a bronze snake and put it on a pole. Then when a snake bit anyone, that person looked at the bronze snake and lived [2 Kin. 18:4; John 3:14].

The Journey to Moab

10 The ·Israelites [L sons/T children of Israel] went and camped at Oboth. 11 They went from Oboth to Iye Abarim, in the ·desert [wilderness] east of Moab. 12 From there they went and camped in the Zered ·Valley [Wadi]. 13 From there they went and camped across the Arnon, in the ·desert [wilderness] just inside the Amorite country. The Arnon is the border between the Moabites and the Amorites. 14 That is why the Book of the Wars of the Lord [C a source now lost] says:

“ … and Waheb in Suphah, and the ·ravines [wadis],
the Arnon, 15     and the slopes of the ·ravines [wadis]
that lead to the settlement of Ar.
    These places are at the border of Moab.”

16 The Israelites went from there to Beer; a well is there where the Lord said to Moses, “Gather the people and I will give them water.”

17 Then the Israelites sang this song:

“·Pour out water [Spring up], well!
    Sing ·about [or to] it.
18 Princes dug this well.
    ·Important men [Leaders of the people] made it.
    With their scepters and poles, they dug it.”

The people went from the ·desert [wilderness] to Mattanah. 19 From Mattanah they went to Nahaliel and on to Bamoth. 20 From Bamoth they went to the valley of Moab where the top of Mount Pisgah looks over the ·desert [wilderness].

Israel Kills Sihon and Og

21 The Israelites sent messengers to Sihon, king of the Amorites, saying, 22 “Let ·us [L me] pass through your country. We will not go through any fields of grain or vineyards, or drink water from the wells. We will travel only along the ·king’s road [King’s Highway; 20:17] until we have passed through your ·country [boundaries].”

23 But King Sihon would not let the Israelites pass through his ·country [boundaries]. He gathered his whole army together, and they marched out to meet Israel in the ·desert [wilderness]. At Jahaz they fought the Israelites. 24 Israel ·killed [L struck with the sword] the king and captured his land from the Arnon River to the Jabbok River. They took the land as far as the ·Ammonite border [L border of the sons of Ammon], which was strongly defended. 25 Israel captured all the Amorite cities and lived in them, taking Heshbon and all the towns around it. 26 Heshbon was the city where Sihon, the Amorite king, lived. In the past he had fought with the king of Moab and had taken all the land from his hand as far as the Arnon.

27 That is why the poets say:

“Come to Heshbon
    and rebuild it;
    ·rebuild [establish] Sihon’s city.
28 A fire ·began in [L went out from] Heshbon;
    flames came from Sihon’s city.
It destroyed Ar in Moab,
    and it ·burned [or swallowed] the Arnon highlands.
29 ·How terrible for [T Woe to] you, Moab!
    The people of Chemosh are ruined.
His sons ran away
    and his daughters were captured
    by Sihon, king of the Amorites.
30 But we defeated those Amorites.
    We ruined their towns from Heshbon to Dibon,
    and we destroyed them as far as Nophah, near Medeba.”

31 So Israel lived in the land of the Amorites.

32 After Moses sent spies to the town of Jazer, they captured ·the towns around it [its villages], forcing out the Amorites who lived there.

33 Then the Israelites went up the road toward Bashan. Og king of Bashan and his whole army marched out to meet the Israelites, and they fought at Edrei.

34 The Lord said to Moses, “Don’t be afraid of him. I will hand him, his whole army, and his land over to you. Do to him what you did to Sihon, the Amorite king who lived in Heshbon.”

35 So the Israelites ·killed [L struck] Og and his sons and all his army; no one was left alive. And they took his land [Deut. 1:4; 3:1–7; Ps. 135:11; 136:20].

Psalm 60-61

A Prayer After a Defeat

For the director of music. To the tune of “Lily of the ·Agreement [Testimony].” A miktam [C perhaps “inscription”] of David. For teaching. When David fought the Arameans of ·northwest Mesopotamia [Naharaim; L the Two Rivers] and Zobah, and when Joab returned and ·defeated [L struck] twelve thousand ·Edomites at the Valley of Salt [2 Sam. 8; 1 Chr. 18].

60 God, you have rejected us and ·scattered us [broken us down; burst forth on us].
    You have been angry, but please ·come back to [restore] us.
You made the earth shake and ·crack [split open].
    Heal its ·breaks [cracks; fractures] because it ·is shaking [totters].
You have ·given your people [L made your people see] ·trouble [hardship].
    You made us ·unable to walk straight, like people drunk with wine [L drink wine that makes us reel; C the cup of God’s wrath; Jer. 25:15–29; Nah. 3:11; Matt. 26:39].
You have raised a banner to gather those who fear you.
    Now they can ·stand up against the enemy [L escape/flee from the bow]. ·Selah [Interlude]

Answer us and ·save us [give us victory] by your ·power [L hand]
so ·the people you love [your beloved] will be rescued.

God has said ·from his Temple [from his Holy Place; or in his holiness],
    “·When I win [or With joy], I will ·divide [parcel up] Shechem
    and measure off the Valley of Succoth [Gen. 33:17–20].
Gilead and Manasseh are mine.
    Ephraim is like my helmet.
    Judah holds my royal scepter [Gen. 49:10; C they are agents of God’s power].
Moab is like my washbowl.
    I throw my sandals at Edom [C showing contempt].
I shout [C in triumph] at Philistia [C enemies of Israel].”

Who will bring me to the ·strong, walled [fortified] city?
    Who will lead me to Edom?
10 God, ·surely you have rejected [L have you not rejected…?] us;
    you do not go out with our armies.
11 ·Help us fight the enemy [L Give us help against the foe].
    Human ·help [deliverance] is useless,
12 but we can ·win [fight bravely] with God’s help.
    He will ·defeat [tread on] our ·enemies [foes].

A Prayer for Protection

For the director of music. With stringed instruments. Of David.

61 God, hear my cry;
    ·listen [pay attention] to my prayer.
I call to you from the ends of the earth [C far from the Temple]
    when ·I am afraid [L my heart grows faint].
    ·Carry [Lead] me away to ·a high mountain [L the rock that is higher than I am; C a place of refuge, perhaps referring to God as the rock; 18:2, 46; 19:14; 62:2].
You have been my ·protection [refuge],
    like a strong tower against my enemies.

Let me ·live [sojourn] in your ·Holy Tent [L tent; C the sanctuary] forever.
Let me find ·safety [refuge] in the shelter of your wings [C an image of compassion, or perhaps referring to the cherubim whose wings cover the Ark of the Covenant; Ex. 25:20]. ·Selah [Interlude]

God, you have heard my ·promises [vows].
You have given me what belongs to those who fear ·you [L your name].

·Give the king a long life [L Add days to the days of the king];
    let ·him live many years [L his years be forever and ever].
Let him ·rule [reign] in the presence of God forever.
    Protect him with your ·love [loyalty] and ·truth [faithfulness].
Then I will ·praise [sing a psalm to] your name forever,
    and every day I will ·keep my promises [fulfill my vows].

Isaiah 10:5-34

God Will Punish Assyria

God says, “·How terrible it will be for the king of Assyria [L Woe to Assyria].
    ·I use him like a rod to show my anger […the rod of my anger];
    in ·anger [my wrath/fury] I use Assyria like a club.
I send ·it [or him; C the king of Assyria] to fight against a godless nation [C Judah; see v. 10].
    I ·command [order; dispatch] ·Assyria [L it; or him] to fight against the people ·with whom I am angry [L of my wrath].
to ·take their wealth from them [L plunder the plunder and loot the loot],
    to trample them down like dirt in the streets.
But Assyria’s king doesn’t ·understand that I am using him [intend to do this];
    ·he [L his heart] doesn’t ·know he is a tool for me [think/reason this way].
He only wants to destroy other people
    and to ·defeat [L cut off] many nations.
The king of Assyria says to himself,
    ‘All of my ·commanders [princes] are like kings
The city Calno is like the city Carchemish.
    The city Hamath is like the city Arpad.
    The city Samaria is like the city Damascus [C all city-states conquered by Assyria].
10 ·I defeated [L My hand has found/seized] those kingdoms that worship idols,
    and those ·idols [carved images] were ·more [greater] than the idols of Jerusalem and Samaria.
11 As I ·defeated [L have done to] Samaria and her idols,
    ·I will also defeat [L shall I also do to…?] Jerusalem and her idols.’”

12 When the Lord finishes doing what he planned to Mount Zion and Jerusalem, he will punish the king of Assyria for ·his proud heart and evil deeds [L the fruit of his great/exalted heart and glory of his haughty/high eyes]. 13 The king of Assyria says this:

“By ·my own power [L the strength of my hand] I have done these things;
    by my wisdom ·and careful planning [L because I have understanding] I have ·defeated many [L removed the boundaries/borders of] nations.
I have ·taken their wealth [plundered their treasures],
    and, like a ·mighty one [or bull], I have ·taken their people [or defeated their kings; L removed the sitting ones; C referring to those inhabiting the land or to kings on thrones].
14 ·I have taken [L My hand has found] the riches of all these people,
    like a person reaching into a bird’s nest.
I have ·taken [gathered] these nations,
    like a person ·taking [L gathering abandoned] eggs.
Not one ·raised a hand [L flapped a wing]
    or opened its mouth to ·stop me [L chirp].”

15 ·An ax is not better than [L Does an ax exalt itself above…?] the person who swings it.
    ·A saw is not better than […or a saw over…?] the one who uses it.
A ·stick [rod; or scepter] cannot control the person who picks it up.
    A club cannot pick up ·the person [L one who is not wood; or as if it were not made of wood]!
16 So the Lord God ·All-Powerful [Almighty; of Heaven’s Armies; T of hosts]
    will send ·a terrible disease [L leanness; emaciation] upon Assyria’s ·soldiers [strong/stout/fat ones].
·The strength of Assyria will be burned up [L Under his glory a fire will be lit]
    like a fire burning.
17 The Light of Israel [C God], will be like a fire;
    the Holy One [1:4] will be like a flame.
He will be like a fire
    that ·suddenly [L in one day] burns and ·consumes [devours] the weeds and thorns.
18 The fire burns away the ·great [glorious] trees and rich farmlands,
    destroying everything.
    It will be like a sick person who wastes away.
19 The trees left standing will be so few
    that even a child could count them.

20 At that time the ·people left in [remnant of] Israel
    and the survivors of the ·family [L house] of Jacob.
will not continue to depend
    on the person who ·defeated [struck] them [9:13].
They will learn truly to depend on the Lord,
    the Holy One of Israel [1:4].
21 ·Those who are left alive in Jacob’s family [L A remnant will return, a remnant of Jacob; 7:3]
    will ·again follow [return to] the powerful God.
22 Israel, though your people are many,
    like the grains of sand by the sea [48:19; Gen. 15:5; 22:17; Hos. 1:10].
    only a ·few [L remnant] of them will ·be left alive to return to the Lord [L return; 7:3].
·God has announced that he will destroy the land [Destruction has been decreed]
    ·completely and fairly [L overflowing/overwhelming with righteousness/justice].
23 The Lord God ·All-Powerful [Almighty; of Heaven’s Armies; T of hosts] will ·certainly [or fully] destroy this land,
    as he has ·announced [decreed].

24 This is what the Lord God ·All-Powerful [Almighty; of Heaven’s Armies; T of hosts] says:

“My people living in ·Jerusalem [L Zion; 1:27],
    don’t be afraid of the Assyrians,
who beat you with a ·rod [staff; scepter]
    and raise a ·stick [staff; rod; club] against you, as Egypt did.
25 After a short time my anger against you will stop,
    and then I will turn my anger to destroying them.”

26 Then the Lord ·All-Powerful [Almighty; of Heaven’s Armies; T of hosts] will beat the Assyrians with a whip
    as he defeated Midian at the rock of Oreb [Judg. 7:25].
He will raise his ·stick [staff; rod] over the waters
    as he did in Egypt [Ex. 14:15–16].
27 ·Then [L In that day] ·the troubles that Assyria puts on you [L their burden on your shoulders]
    will be removed,
and the ·load they make you carry [L yoke from your neck]
    will be ·taken away[a] [L destroyed because of the fat/oil; C because of Israel’s new strength, or because of the Lord’s blessings, or because of an Anointed One].

Assyria Invades Israel

28 ·The army of Assyria [L They] will enter near Aiath.
    Its soldiers will walk through Migron.
    They will store their ·food [supplies; equipment] in Micmash.
29 The army will go over the pass.
    The soldiers will ·sleep [camp; lodge] at Geba.
·The people of Ramah will be afraid [L Ramah trembles],
    ·and the people at Gibeah of Saul will run away [L Gibeah of Saul flees; 1 Sam. 11:4].
30 Cry out, ·Bath [or Daughter of] Gallim!
    Laishah, listen!
    ·Poor [or Answer her] Anathoth!
31 ·The people of Madmenah are running away [L Madmenah flees];
    the people of Gebim ·are hiding [seek cover].
32 This day the army will stop at Nob [1 Sam 21–22].
    They will shake their fist at ·Mount Zion [L the mount of Daughter Zion],
at the hill of Jerusalem.

33 Watch! The Lord God ·All-Powerful [Almighty; of Heaven’s Armies; T of hosts]
    with his ·great [terrifying] power will chop them down like a great tree.
Those who are ·great [lofty] will be cut down;
    those who are ·important [or tallest] will ·fall to the ground [be brought low].
34 He will cut them down
    as a forest is cut down with an ax.
And ·the great trees of Lebanon [L Lebanon]
    will fall ·by the power of [or before] the Mighty One.

James 4

Give Yourselves to God

Do you know where your ·fights [conflicts; wars] and ·arguments [disputes; quarrels; battles] come from? They come from ·the selfish desires [cravings] that war ·within you [L in your members; C probably parts of the body, but could be members of the church]. You ·want [desire] things, but you ·do not [or cannot] have them. So you ·are ready to kill [L murder] and are ·jealous [envious] of other people, but you still cannot get what you want. So you argue and ·fight [wage war]. You do not get what you want, because you do not ask God. Or when you ask, you do not receive because ·the reason you ask is wrong [or you ask with the wrong motives; L you ask badly/wrongly]. You want things so you ·can use [L spend] them for your own pleasures.

·So, you are not loyal to God [L You adulterers!; C often adultery is used in a spiritual sense for betraying God; Jer. 3:20]! ·You should know [L Don’t you know…?] that ·loving [L friendship with] the world is ·the same as hating [L hostility/enmity toward] God. Anyone who wants to be a friend of the world becomes God’s enemy. Do you think the Scripture ·means nothing that says [or says for no reason], ·“The Spirit that God made to live in us wants us for himself alone”? [or “God yearns jealously for the spirit he has made to live in us”?; or “The spirit God placed within us tends to jealously desire things”?; C for God’s jealousy for his people see Ex. 20:5; 34:14; Zech. 8:2]. But God gives us even more grace, as ·the Scripture [L it; or he] says,

“God ·is against [opposes; resists] the proud,
    but he gives grace to the humble [Prov. 3:34; 1 Pet. 5:5].”

So ·give yourselves completely [submit] to God. ·Stand against [Resist] the devil [1 Pet. 5:9], and the devil will ·run [flee] from you. Come near to God, and God will come near to you. You sinners, ·clean sin out of your lives [L cleanse/purify your hands; C a metaphor for cleaning up your behavior]. ·You who are trying to follow God and the world at the same time [L You double-minded ones], ·make your thinking pure [L purify your hearts; C a metaphor for cleaning up your interior life]. ·Be sad [Lament], ·cry [mourn], and weep! Change your laughter into ·crying [mourning] and your joy into ·sadness [gloom; sorrow]. 10 Humble yourself in the Lord’s presence, and he will ·honor you [L exalt you; lift you up; 1 Pet. 5:6].

You Are Not the Judge

11 Brothers and sisters [C fellow believers], do not ·tell evil lies about [slander] each other [Lev. 19:16]. If you ·speak against [slander] your ·fellow believers [L a brother or sister] or judge them, you are judging and ·speaking against [slandering] the law [C because the law commanded love]. And when you are judging the law, you are no longer a ·follower [L doer] of the law. You have become a judge [C sitting in judgment over the law]. 12 ·God is the only [L There is one] ·Lawmaker [Lawgiver] and Judge. He is the only One who can save and destroy [Matt. 10:28]. ·So it is not right for you [L So who are you…?] to judge your neighbor [Lev. 19:18].

Let God Plan Your Life

13 ·Some of you say [L Come now, you who say], “Today or tomorrow we will go to some city. We will stay there a year, do business, and make money.” 14 But you do not know what will happen tomorrow! Your life is like a ·mist [vapor; puff of smoke]. ·You can see it [It appears] for a short time, but then it ·goes away [vanishes; Prov. 27:1]. 15 ·So [or Instead] you should say, “If the Lord ·wants [wills; wishes], we will live and do this or that [Matt. 6:10].” 16 But now you are ·proud [arrogant; C probably referring to their plans for the future] and you brag [boast]. All of this bragging [boasting] is wrong [L evil; wicked; 3:14]. 17 [L Therefore] Anyone who knows the right thing to do, but does not do it, ·is sinning [L for him it is sin].
