Jeremiah 48:1-49:22

Judgment Against Moab

48 The Lord of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel,[a] spoke about Moab:[b]

“Sure to be judged is Nebo! Indeed,[c] it will be destroyed.
Kiriathaim[d] will suffer disgrace. It will be captured!
Its fortress[e] will suffer disgrace. It will be torn down![f]
People will not praise Moab anymore.
The enemy will capture Heshbon[g] and plot[h] how to destroy Moab,[i]
saying, ‘Come, let’s put an end to that nation!’
City of Madmen, you will also be destroyed.[j]
A destructive army will march against you.[k]
Cries of anguish will arise in Horonaim,
‘Oh, the ruin and great destruction!’
“Moab will be crushed.

Her children will cry out in distress.[l]
Indeed they will climb the slopes of Luhith,
weeping continually as they go.[m]
For on the road down to Horonaim
they will hear the cries of distress over the destruction.[n]
They will hear, ‘Run! Save yourselves;
even if you must be like a lonely shrub in the wilderness!’[o]
“Moab, you trust in the things you do and in your riches.

So you too will be conquered.
Your god Chemosh[p] will go into exile[q]
along with his priests and his officials.
The destroyer will come against every town.
Not one town will escape.
The towns in the valley will be destroyed.
The cities on the high plain will be laid waste.[r]
I, the Lord, have spoken.[s]
Set up a gravestone for Moab,
for it will certainly be laid in ruins![t]
Its cities will be laid waste
and become uninhabited.
10 A curse on anyone who is lax in doing the Lord’s work!
A curse on anyone who keeps from carrying out his destruction![u]
11 “From its earliest days Moab has lived undisturbed.

It has never been taken into exile.
Its people are like wine allowed to settle undisturbed on its dregs,
never poured out from one jar to another.
They are like wine that tastes like it always did,
whose aroma has remained unchanged.[v]
12 But the time is coming when I will send
men against Moab who will empty it out.
They will empty the towns of their people,
then will lay those towns in ruins.[w]
I, the Lord, affirm it![x]
13 The people of Moab will be disappointed by their god Chemosh.
They will be as disappointed as the people of Israel were
when they put their trust in the calf god at Bethel.[y]
14 How can you men of Moab say, ‘We are heroes,
men who are mighty in battle?’
15 Moab will be destroyed. Its towns will be invaded.
Its finest young men will be slaughtered.[z]
I, the King, the Lord of Heaven’s Armies,[aa] affirm it![ab]
16 Moab’s destruction is at hand.
Disaster will come on it quickly.
17 Mourn for that nation, all you nations living around it,
all you nations that know of its fame.[ac]
Mourn and say, ‘Alas, its powerful influence has been broken!
Its glory and power have been done away with!’[ad]
18 Come down from your place of honor;
sit on the dry ground,[ae] you who live in Dibon.[af]
For the one who will destroy Moab will attack you;
he will destroy your fortifications.
19 You who live in Aroer,[ag]
stand by the road and watch.
Question the man who is fleeing and the woman who is escaping.
Ask them, ‘What has happened?’
20 They will answer, ‘Moab is disgraced, for it has fallen!
Wail and cry out in mourning!
Announce along the Arnon River
that Moab has been destroyed.’

21 “Judgment will come on the cities on the high plain:[ah] on Holon, Jahzah, and Mephaath; 22 on Dibon, Nebo, and Beth Diblathaim; 23 on Kiriathaim, Beth Gamul, and Beth Meon; 24 on Kerioth and Bozrah. It will come on all the towns of Moab, both far and near. 25 Moab’s might will be crushed. Its power will be broken.[ai] I, the Lord, affirm it![aj]

26 “Moab has vaunted itself against me.
So make him drunk with the wine of my wrath[ak]
until he splashes[al] around in his own vomit,
until others treat him as a laughingstock.
27 For did not you people of Moab laugh at the people of Israel?
Did you think that they were nothing but thieves,[am]
that you shook your head in contempt[an]
every time you talked about them?[ao]
28 Leave your towns, you inhabitants of Moab.
Go and live in the cliffs.
Be like a dove that makes its nest
high on the sides of a ravine.[ap]
29 I have heard how proud the people of Moab are,
I know how haughty they are.
I have heard how arrogant, proud, and haughty they are,
what a high opinion they have of themselves.[aq]
30 I, the Lord, affirm that[ar] I know how arrogant they are.
But their pride is ill founded.
Their boastings will prove to be false.[as]
31 So I will weep with sorrow for Moab.
I will cry out in sadness for all Moab.
I will moan[at] for the people of Kir Heres.
32 I will weep for the grapevines of Sibmah
just like the town of Jazer weeps over them.[au]
Their branches once spread as far as the Dead Sea.[av]
They reached as far as the town of Jazer.[aw]
The destroyer will ravage
her fig, date,[ax] and grape crops.
33 Joy and gladness will disappear
from the fruitful land of Moab.[ay]
I will stop the flow of wine from the winepresses.
No one will stomp on the grapes there and shout for joy.[az]
The shouts there will be shouts of soldiers,
not the shouts of those making wine.[ba]
34 Cries of anguish raised from Heshbon and Elealeh
will be sounded as far as Jahaz.[bb]
They will be sounded from Zoar as far as Horonaim and Eglath Shelishiyah.
For even the waters of Nimrim will be dried up.
35 I will put an end in Moab
to those who make offerings at her places of worship.[bc]
I will put an end to those who sacrifice to other gods.
I, the Lord, affirm it![bd]
36 So my heart moans for Moab
like a flute playing a funeral song.
Yes, like a flute playing a funeral song,
my heart moans for the people of Kir Heres.
For the wealth they have gained will perish.
37 For all of them will shave their heads in mourning.
They will all cut off their beards to show their sorrow.
They will all make gashes in their hands.
They will all put on sackcloth.[be]
38 On all the housetops in Moab
and in all its public squares
there will be nothing but mourning.
For I will break Moab like an unwanted jar.
I, the Lord, affirm it![bf]
39 Oh, how shattered Moab will be!
Oh, how her people will wail!
Oh, how she will turn away[bg] in shame!
Moab will become an object of ridicule,
a terrifying sight to all the nations that surround her.”
40 For the Lord says,

“Look! Like an eagle with outspread wings
a nation will swoop down on Moab.[bh]
41 Her towns[bi] will be captured;
her fortresses will be taken.
At that time the soldiers of Moab will be frightened
like a woman in labor.[bj]
42 Moab will be destroyed and no longer be a nation,[bk]
because she has vaunted herself against the Lord.
43 Terror, pits, and traps[bl] are in store
for the people who live in Moab.[bm]
I, the Lord, affirm it![bn]
44 Anyone who flees at the sound of terror
will fall into a pit.
Anyone who climbs out of the pit
will be caught in a trap.[bo]
For the time is coming
when I will punish the people of Moab.[bp]
I, the Lord, affirm it![bq]
45 In the shadows of the walls of Heshbon
those trying to escape will stand helpless.
For a fire will burst forth from Heshbon.
Flames will shoot out from the former territory of Sihon.
They will burn the foreheads of the people of Moab,
the skulls of those war-loving people.[br]
46 Moab, you are doomed![bs]
You people who worship Chemosh will be destroyed.
Your sons will be taken away captive.
Your daughters will be carried away into exile.[bt]
47 Yet in future days
I will reverse Moab’s ill fortune,”[bu]
says the Lord.[bv]

The judgment against Moab ends here.

Judgment Against Ammon

49 The Lord spoke about the Ammonites:[bw]

“Do you think there are not any people of the nation of Israel remaining?
Do you think there are not any of them remaining to reinherit their land?
Is that why you people who worship the god Milcom[bx]
have taken possession of the territory of Gad and live in his cities?[by]
Because you did that,
I, the Lord, affirm that[bz] a time is coming
when I will make Rabbah, the capital city of Ammon,
hear the sound of the battle cry.
It will become a mound covered with ruins.[ca]
Its villages will be burned to the ground.[cb]
Then Israel will take back its land
from those who took their land from them.
I, the Lord, affirm it![cc]
Wail, you people in Heshbon, because Ai in Ammon is destroyed.
Cry out in anguish, you people in the villages surrounding[cd] Rabbah.
Put on sackcloth and cry out in mourning.
Run about covered with gashes.[ce]
For your god Milcom will go into exile
along with his priests and officials.[cf]
Why do you brag about your great power?
Your power is ebbing away,[cg] you rebellious people of Ammon,[ch]
who trust in your riches and say,
‘Who would dare to attack us?’
I will bring terror on you from every side,”
says the Sovereign Lord of Heaven’s Armies.[ci]
“You will be scattered in every direction.[cj]
No one will gather the fugitives back together.
Yet in days to come
I will reverse Ammon’s ill fortune.”[ck]
says the Lord.[cl]

Judgment Against Edom

The Lord of Heaven’s Armies[cm] spoke about Edom:[cn]

“Is wisdom no longer to be found in Teman?[co]
Can Edom’s counselors not give her any good advice?[cp]
Has all their wisdom turned bad?[cq]
Turn and flee! Take up refuge in remote places,[cr]
you people who live in Dedan.[cs]
For I will bring disaster on the descendants of Esau.
I have decided it is time for me to punish them.[ct]
If grape pickers came to pick your grapes,
would they not leave a few grapes behind?[cu]
If robbers came at night,
would they not pillage only what they needed?[cv]
10 But I will strip everything away from Esau’s descendants.
I will uncover their hiding places so they cannot hide.
Their children, relatives, and neighbors will all be destroyed.
Not one of them will be left!
11 Leave your orphans behind and I will keep them alive.
Your widows, too, can depend on me.”[cw]

12 For the Lord says, “If even those who did not deserve to drink from the cup of my wrath must drink from it, do you think you will go unpunished? You will not go unpunished, but must certainly drink from the cup of my wrath.[cx] 13 For I solemnly swear,”[cy] says the Lord, “that Bozrah[cz] will become a pile of ruins. It will become an object of horror and ridicule, an example to be used in curses.[da] All the towns around it will lie in ruins forever.”

14 I said,[db] “I have heard a message from the Lord.
A messenger has been sent among the nations to say,
‘Gather your armies and march out against her!
Prepare to do battle with her!’”[dc]
15 The Lord says to Edom,[dd]
“I will certainly make you small among nations.
I will make you despised by all humankind.
16 The terror you inspire in others[de]
and the arrogance of your heart have deceived you.
You may make your home in the clefts of the rocks;
you may occupy the highest places in the hills.[df]
But even if you made your home where the eagles nest,
I would bring you down from there,”
says the Lord.
17 “Edom will become an object of horror.
All who pass by it will be filled with horror;
they will hiss out their scorn
because of all the disasters that have happened to it.[dg]
18 Edom will be destroyed like Sodom and Gomorrah
and the towns that were around them.
No one will live there.
No human being will settle in it,”
says the Lord.
19 “A lion coming up from the thick undergrowth along the Jordan[dh]
scatters the sheep in the pastureland around it.[di]
So too I will chase the Edomites off their land.[dj]
Then I will appoint over it whomever I choose.[dk]
For there is no one like me, and there is no one who can call me to account.[dl]
There is no[dm] ruler[dn] who can stand up against me.
20 So listen to what I, the Lord, have planned against Edom,
what I intend to do to[do] the people who live in Teman.[dp]
Their little ones will be dragged off.
I will completely destroy their land because of what they have done.[dq]
21 The people of the earth will quake when they hear of their downfall.[dr]
Their cries of anguish will be heard all the way to the Gulf of Aqaba.[ds]
22 Look! Like an eagle with outspread wings,
a nation will soar up and swoop down on Bozrah.
At that time the soldiers of Edom will be as fearful
as a woman in labor.”[dt]

2 Timothy 4

Charge to Timothy Repeated

I solemnly charge you before God and Christ Jesus, who is going to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: Preach the message,[a] be ready[b] whether it is convenient or not,[c] reprove, rebuke, exhort[d] with complete patience and instruction. For there will be a time when people[e] will not tolerate sound teaching. Instead, following their own desires,[f] they will accumulate teachers for themselves, because they have an insatiable curiosity to hear new things.[g] And they will turn away from hearing the truth, but on the other hand they will turn aside to myths.[h] You, however, be self-controlled[i] in all things, endure hardship, do an evangelist’s work, fulfill your ministry. For I am already being poured out as an offering, and the time for me to depart[j] is at hand. I have competed well;[k] I have finished the race; I have kept the faith! Finally the crown of righteousness is reserved for me. The Lord, the righteous Judge, will award it to me in that day—and not to me only, but also to all who have set their affection on[l] his appearing.

Travel Plans and Concluding Greetings

Make every effort to come to me soon. 10 For Demas[m] deserted me, since he loved[n] the present age, and he went to Thessalonica. Crescens went to Galatia and Titus to Dalmatia. 11 Only Luke is with me. Get Mark and bring him with you, because he is a great help[o] to me in ministry.[p] 12 Now I have sent Tychicus to Ephesus. 13 When you come, bring with you the cloak I left in Troas with Carpas and the scrolls, especially the parchments. 14 Alexander the coppersmith did me a great deal of harm.[q] The Lord will repay him in keeping with his deeds.[r] 15 You be on guard against him[s] too, because he vehemently opposed our words. 16 At my first defense no one appeared in my support; instead they all deserted me—may they not be held accountable for it. 17 But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me, so that through me the message[t] would be fully proclaimed[u] for all the Gentiles to hear. And so I was delivered from the lion’s mouth! 18 The Lord will deliver me from every evil deed and will bring me safely[v] into his heavenly kingdom. To him[w] be glory for ever and ever![x] Amen.

19 Greetings to[y] Prisca and Aquila[z] and the family of Onesiphorus. 20 Erastus stayed in Corinth. Trophimus I left ill in Miletus. 21 Make every effort to come before winter. Greetings to you from Eubulus, Pudens, Linus, Claudia, and all the brothers and sisters.[aa] 22 The Lord[ab] be with your spirit. Grace be with you.[ac]

Psalm 95-96

Psalm 95[a]

95 Come, let us sing for joy to the Lord.
Let us shout out praises to our Protector who delivers us.[b]
Let us enter his presence[c] with thanksgiving.
Let us shout out to him in celebration.[d]
For the Lord is a great God,
a great king who is superior to[e] all gods.
The depths of the earth are in his hand,[f]
and the mountain peaks belong to him.
The sea is his, for he made it.
His hands formed the dry land.
Come, let us bow down and worship.[g]
Let us kneel before the Lord, our Creator.
For he is our God;
we are the people of his pasture,
the sheep he owns.[h]
Today, if only you would obey him.[i]
He says,[j] “Do not be stubborn like they were at Meribah,[k]
like they were that day at Massah[l] in the wilderness,[m]
where your ancestors challenged my authority,[n]
and tried my patience, even though they had seen my work.
10 For forty years I was continually disgusted[o] with that generation,
and I said, ‘These people desire to go astray;[p]
they do not obey my commands.’[q]
11 So I made a vow in my anger,
‘They will never enter into the resting place I had set aside for them.’”[r]

Psalm 96[s]

96 Sing to the Lord a new song.[t]
Sing to the Lord, all the earth.
Sing to the Lord. Praise his name.
Announce every day how he delivers.[u]
Tell the nations about his splendor.
Tell[v] all the nations about his amazing deeds.
For the Lord is great and certainly worthy of praise;
he is more awesome than all gods.[w]
For all the gods of the nations are worthless,[x]
but the Lord made the sky.
Majestic splendor emanates from him;[y]
his sanctuary is firmly established and beautiful.[z]
Ascribe to the Lord, O families of the nations,
ascribe to the Lord splendor and strength.
Ascribe to the Lord the splendor he deserves.[aa]
Bring an offering and enter his courts.
Worship the Lord in holy attire.[ab]
Tremble before him, all the earth.
10 Say among the nations, “The Lord reigns!
The world is established; it cannot be moved.
He judges the nations fairly.”
11 Let the sky rejoice, and the earth be happy.
Let the sea and everything in it shout.
12 Let the fields and everything in them celebrate.
Then let the trees of the forest shout with joy
13 before the Lord, for he comes.
For he comes to judge the earth.
He judges the world fairly,[ac]
and the nations in accordance with his justice.[ad]

Proverbs 26:9-12

Like[a] a thorn[b] has gone up into the hand of a drunkard,
so[c] a proverb has gone up[d] into the mouth of a fool.[e]
10 Like[f] an archer who wounds at random,[g]
so[h] is the one who hires[i] a fool or hires any passerby.
11 Like a dog that returns to its vomit,[j]
so a fool repeats his folly.[k]
12 You have seen[l] a man wise in his own opinion[m]
there is more hope for a fool[n] than for him.
