Numbers 36 - Deuteronomy 1

Women and Land Inheritance

36 Then the heads of the family groups[a] of the Gileadites, the descendant of Machir, the descendant of Manasseh, who were from the Josephite families, approached and spoke before Moses[b] and the leaders who were the heads of the Israelite families.[c] They said, “The Lord commanded my lord to give[d] the land as an inheritance by lot to the Israelites; and my lord was commanded by the Lord to give the inheritance of our brother Zelophehad to his daughters. Now if they should be married to one of the men[e] from another Israelite tribe, their inheritance would be taken from the inheritance of our fathers and added to the inheritance of the tribe into which they marry.[f] As a result, it will be taken from the lot of our inheritance. And when the Jubilee of the Israelites is to take place,[g] their inheritance will be added to the inheritance of the tribe into which they marry. So their inheritance will be taken away from the inheritance of our ancestral tribe.”[h]

Moses’ Decision

Then Moses gave a ruling[i] to the Israelites by the word[j] of the Lord: “What the tribe of the Josephites is saying is right. This is what[k] the Lord has commanded for Zelophehad’s daughters: ‘Let them marry[l] whomever they think best,[m] only they must marry within the family of their father’s tribe. In this way the inheritance of the Israelites will not be transferred[n] from tribe to tribe. But every one of the Israelites must retain the ancestral heritage. And every daughter who possesses an inheritance from any of the tribes of the Israelites must become the wife of a man from any family in her father’s tribe, so that every Israelite[o] may retain the inheritance of his fathers. No inheritance may pass from tribe to tribe. But every one of the tribes of the Israelites must retain its inheritance.’”

10 As the Lord had commanded Moses, so the daughters of Zelophehad did. 11 For the daughters of Zelophehad—Mahlah, Tirzah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Noah—were married to the sons of their uncles.[p] 12 They were married into the families of the Manassehites, the descendants of Joseph, and their inheritance remained in the tribe of their father’s family.

13 These are the commandments and the decisions that the Lord commanded the Israelites through the authority[q] of Moses, in the rift valley plains[r] by Moab along the Jordan River[s] opposite Jericho.

The Covenant Setting

This is what[t] Moses said to all of Israel in the Transjordanian[u] wilderness, the arid rift valley opposite[v] Suph,[w] between[x] Paran[y] and Tophel,[z] Laban,[aa] Hazeroth,[ab] and Di Zahab.[ac] Now it is ordinarily an eleven-day journey[ad] from Horeb[ae] to Kadesh Barnea[af] by way of Mount Seir.[ag] However, it was not until[ah] the first day of the eleventh month[ai] of the fortieth year[aj] that Moses addressed the Israelites just as[ak] the Lord had instructed him to do. This took place after the defeat[al] of King Sihon[am] of the Amorites, whose capital was[an] in Heshbon,[ao] and King Og of Bashan, whose capital was[ap] in Ashtaroth,[aq] specifically in Edrei.[ar] So it was in the Transjordan, in Moab, that Moses began to deliver these words:[as]

Events at Horeb

The Lord our God spoke to us at Horeb and said, “You have stayed[at] in the area of this mountain long enough. Head out[au] and resume your journey. Enter the Amorite hill country, and all its neighboring areas, including the rift valley,[av] the hill country, the foothills,[aw] the Negev,[ax] and the coastal plain—all of Canaan and Lebanon as far as the Great River, that is, the Euphrates. Look! I have already given the land to you.[ay] Go, occupy the territory that I,[az] the Lord, promised[ba] to give to your ancestors[bb] Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and to their descendants.”[bc] I also said to you at that time, “I am no longer able to sustain you by myself. 10 The Lord your God has increased your population[bd] to the point that you are now as numerous as the very stars of the sky.[be] 11 Indeed, may the Lord, the God of your ancestors, make you a thousand times more numerous than you are now, blessing you[bf] just as he said he would! 12 But how can I alone bear up under the burden of your hardship and strife? 13 Select wise and practical[bg] men, those known among your tribes, whom I may appoint as your leaders.” 14 You replied to me that what I had said to you was good. 15 So I chose[bh] as your tribal leaders wise and well-known men, placing them over you as administrators of groups of thousands, hundreds, fifties, and tens, and also as other tribal officials. 16 I furthermore admonished your judges at that time that they[bi] should pay attention to issues among your fellow citizens[bj] and judge fairly,[bk] whether between one person and a native Israelite[bl] or a resident foreigner.[bm] 17 They[bn] must not discriminate in judgment, but hear the lowly[bo] and the great alike. Nor should they be intimidated by human beings, for judgment belongs to God. If the matter being adjudicated is too difficult for them, they should bring it before me for a hearing.

Instructions at Kadesh Barnea

18 So I instructed you at that time regarding everything you should do. 19 Then we left Horeb and passed through all that immense, forbidding wilderness that you saw on the way to the Amorite hill country as the Lord our God had commanded us to do, finally arriving at Kadesh Barnea. 20 Then I said to you, “You have come to the Amorite hill country, which the Lord our God is about to give[bp] us. 21 Look, he[bq] has placed the land in front of you![br] Go up, take possession of it, just as the Lord, the God of your ancestors, said to do. Do not be afraid or discouraged!” 22 So all of you approached me and said, “Let’s send some men ahead of us to scout out the land and bring us back word as to how we should attack it and what the cities are like there.” 23 I thought this was a good idea,[bs] so I sent[bt] twelve men from among you, one from each tribe. 24 They left and went up to the hill country, coming to the Eshcol Valley,[bu] which they scouted out. 25 Then they took[bv] some of the produce of the land and carried it back down to us. They also brought a report to us, saying, “The land that the Lord our God is about to give us is good.”

Disobedience at Kadesh Barnea

26 You were not willing to go up, however, but instead rebelled against the Lord your God.[bw] 27 You complained among yourselves privately[bx] and said, “Because the Lord hates us he brought us from Egypt to deliver us over to the Amorites so they could destroy us! 28 What is going to happen to us? Our brothers have drained away our courage[by] by describing people who are more numerous[bz] and taller than we are, and great cities whose defenses appear to be as high as heaven[ca] itself! Moreover, they said they saw[cb] Anakites[cc] there.” 29 So I responded to you, “Do not be terrified[cd] of them! 30 The Lord your God is about to go[ce] ahead of you; he will fight for you, just as you saw him do in Egypt[cf] 31 and in the wilderness, where you saw him[cg] carrying you along like a man carries his son. This he did everywhere you went until you came to this very place.” 32 However, through all this you did not have confidence in the Lord your God, 33 who would go before you on the way to find places for you to camp, appearing in a fire at night and in a cloud by day to show you the way you ought to go.

Judgment at Kadesh Barnea

34 When the Lord heard you, he became angry and made this vow:[ch] 35 “Not a single person[ci] of this evil generation will see the good land that I promised to give to your ancestors! 36 The exception is Caleb son of Jephunneh;[cj] he will see it and I will give him and his descendants the territory on which he has walked, because he has wholeheartedly followed me.”[ck] 37 As for me, the Lord was also angry with me on your account. He said, “You also will not be able to go there. 38 However, Joshua son of Nun, your assistant,[cl] will go. Encourage him, because he will enable Israel to inherit the land.[cm] 39 Also, your infants, who you thought would die on the way,[cn] and your children, who as yet do not know good from bad,[co] will go there; I will give them the land and they will possess it. 40 But as for you,[cp] turn back and head for the wilderness by the way to the Red Sea.”[cq]

Unsuccessful Conquest of Canaan

41 Then you responded to me and admitted, “We have sinned against the Lord. We will now go up and fight as the Lord our God has told us to do.” So you each put on your battle gear and prepared to go up to the hill country. 42 But the Lord told me: “Tell them this: ‘Do not go up and fight, because I will not be with you and you will be defeated by your enemies.’” 43 I spoke to you, but you did not listen. Instead you rebelled against the Lord[cr] and recklessly went up to the hill country. 44 The Amorite inhabitants of that area[cs] confronted[ct] you and chased you like a swarm of bees, striking you down from Seir as far as Hormah.[cu] 45 Then you came back and wept before the Lord, but he[cv] paid no attention to you whatsoever.[cw] 46 Therefore, you remained at Kadesh for a long time—indeed, for the full time.[cx]

Luke 5:29-6:11

29 Then[a] Levi gave a great banquet[b] in his house for Jesus,[c] and there was a large crowd of tax collectors and others sitting[d] at the table with them. 30 But[e] the Pharisees[f] and their experts in the law[g] complained[h] to his disciples, saying, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?”[i] 31 Jesus[j] answered them, “Those who are well don’t need a physician, but those who are sick do.[k] 32 I have not come[l] to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”[m]

The Superiority of the New

33 Then[n] they said to him, “John’s[o] disciples frequently fast[p] and pray,[q] and so do the disciples of the Pharisees,[r] but yours continue to eat and drink.”[s] 34 So[t] Jesus said to them, “You cannot make the wedding guests[u] fast while the bridegroom[v] is with them, can you?[w] 35 But those days are coming, and when the bridegroom is taken from them,[x] at that time[y] they will fast.” 36 He also told them a parable:[z] “No one tears a patch from a new garment and sews[aa] it on an old garment. If he does, he will have torn[ab] the new, and the piece from the new will not match the old.[ac] 37 And no one pours new wine into old wineskins.[ad] If he does, the new wine will burst the skins and will be spilled, and the skins will be destroyed. 38 Instead new wine must be poured into new wineskins.[ae] 39 [af] No[ag] one after drinking old wine wants the new, for he says, ‘The old is good enough.’”[ah]

Lord of the Sabbath

Jesus[ai] was going through the grain fields on[aj] a Sabbath,[ak] and his disciples picked some heads of wheat,[al] rubbed them in their hands, and ate them.[am] But some of the Pharisees[an] said, “Why are you[ao] doing what is against the law[ap] on the Sabbath?” Jesus[aq] answered them,[ar] “Haven’t you read what David did when he and his companions were hungry— how he entered the house of God, took[as] and ate the sacred bread,[at] which is not lawful[au] for any to eat but the priests alone, and[av] gave it to his companions?”[aw] Then[ax] he said to them, “The Son of Man is lord[ay] of the Sabbath.”

Healing a Withered Hand

On[az] another Sabbath, Jesus[ba] entered the synagogue[bb] and was teaching. Now[bc] a man was there whose right hand was withered.[bd] The experts in the law[be] and the Pharisees[bf] watched[bg] Jesus[bh] closely to see if he would heal on the Sabbath,[bi] so that they could find a reason to accuse him. But[bj] he knew[bk] their thoughts,[bl] and said to the man who had the withered hand, “Get up and stand here.”[bm] So[bn] he rose and stood there. Then[bo] Jesus said to them, “I ask you,[bp] is it lawful to do good on the Sabbath or to do evil, to save a life or to destroy it?” 10 After[bq] looking around[br] at them all, he said to the man,[bs] “Stretch out your hand.” The man[bt] did so, and his hand was restored.[bu] 11 But they were filled with mindless rage[bv] and began debating with one another what they would do[bw] to Jesus.

Psalm 66

Psalm 66[a]

For the music director, a song, a psalm.

66 Shout out praise to God, all the earth!
Sing praises about the majesty of his reputation.[b]
Give him the honor he deserves![c]
Say to God:
“How awesome are your deeds!
Because of your great power your enemies cower in fear[d] before you.
All the earth worships[e] you
and sings praises to you.
They sing praises to your name.” (Selah)
Come and witness[f] God’s exploits![g]
His acts on behalf of people are awesome.[h]
He turned the sea into dry land;[i]
they passed through the river on foot.[j]
Let us rejoice in him there.[k]
He rules[l] by his power forever;
he watches[m] the nations.
Stubborn rebels should not exalt[n] themselves. (Selah)
Praise[o] our God, you nations.
Loudly proclaim his praise.[p]
He preserves our lives[q]
and does not allow our feet to slip.
10 For[r] you, O God, tested us;
you purified us like refined silver.
11 You led us into a trap;[s]
you caused us to suffer.[t]
12 You allowed men to ride over our heads;
we passed through fire and water,
but you brought us out into a wide open place.[u]
13 I will enter[v] your temple with burnt sacrifices;
I will fulfill the vows I made to you,
14 which my lips uttered
and my mouth spoke when I was in trouble.
15 I will offer up to you fattened animals as burnt sacrifices,
along with the smell of sacrificial rams.
I will offer cattle and goats. (Selah)
16 Come! Listen, all you who are loyal to God.[w]
I will declare what he has done for me.
17 I cried out to him for help[x]
and praised him with my tongue.[y]
18 If I had harbored sin in my heart,[z]
the Lord would not have listened.
19 However, God heard;
he listened to my prayer.
20 God deserves praise,[aa]
for[ab] he did not reject my prayer
or abandon his love for me.[ac]

Proverbs 11:24-26

24 One person is generous[a] and yet grows more wealthy,[b]
but another withholds more than he should[c] and comes to poverty.[d]
25 A generous person[e] will be enriched,[f]
and the one who provides water[g] for others[h] will himself be satisfied.[i]
26 People will curse[j] the one who withholds grain,[k]
but they will praise[l] the one who sells it.[m]
