The Descendants of Adam^(A)

5 ^(B)This is the list of the descendants of Adam. (When God created human beings, he made them like himself. ^2 (C)He created them male and female, blessed them, and named them “Human Beings.”) ³ When Adam was 130 years old, he had a son who was like him, and he named him Seth. ⁴ After that, Adam lived another 800 years. He had other children ⁵ and died at the age of 930.

⁶ When Seth was 105, he had a son, Enosh, ⁷ and then lived another 807 years. He had other children ⁸ and died at the age of 912.

⁹ When Enosh was 90, he had a son, Kenan, ¹⁰ and then lived another 815 years. He had other children ¹¹ and died at the age of 905.

¹² When Kenan was 70, he had a son, Mahalalel, ¹³ and then lived another 840 years. He had other children ¹⁴ and died at the age of 910.

¹⁵ When Mahalalel was 65, he had a son, Jared, ¹⁶ and then lived another 830 years. He had other children ¹⁷ and died at the age of 895.

¹⁸ When Jared was 162, he had a son, Enoch, ¹⁹ and then lived another 800 years. He had other children ²⁰ and died at the age of 962.

²¹ When Enoch was 65, he had a son, Methuselah. ²² After that, Enoch lived in fellowship with God for 300 years and had other children. ²³ He lived to be 365 years old. ^24 (D)He spent his life in fellowship with God, and then he disappeared, because God took him away.

²⁵ When Methuselah was 187, he had a son, Lamech, ²⁶ and then lived another 782 years. He had other children ²⁷ and died at the age of 969.

²⁸ When Lamech was 182, he had a son ²⁹ and said, “From the very ground on which the Lord put a curse, this child will bring us relief from all our hard work”; so he named him Noah.^{[a] 30} Lamech lived another 595 years. He had other children ³¹ and died at the age of 777.

³² After Noah was 500 years old, he had three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

Human Wickedness

6 ^(E)When people had spread all over the world, and daughters were being born, ² some of the heavenly beings^[b] saw that these young women were beautiful, so they took the ones they liked. ³ Then the Lord said, “I will not allow people to live forever; they are mortal. From now on they will live no longer than 120 years.” ^4 (F)In those days, and even later, there were giants on the earth who were descendants of human women and the heavenly beings. They were the great heroes and famous men of long ago.

^5 (G)When the Lord saw how wicked everyone on earth was and how evil their thoughts were all the time, ⁶ he was sorry that he had ever made them and put them on the earth. He was so filled with regret ⁷ that he said, “I will wipe out these people I have created, and also the animals and the birds, because I am sorry that I made any of them.” ⁸ But the Lord was pleased with Noah.

Noah

^9-10 (H)This is the story of Noah. He had three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth. Noah had no faults and was the only good man of his time. He lived in fellowship with God, ¹¹ but everyone else was evil in God's sight, and violence had spread everywhere. ¹² God looked at the world and saw that it was evil, for the people were all living evil lives.

¹³ God said to Noah, “I have decided to put an end to all people. I will destroy them completely, because the world is full of their violent deeds. ¹⁴ Build a boat for yourself out of good timber; make rooms in it and cover it with tar inside and out. ¹⁵ Make it 450 feet long, 75 feet wide, and 45 feet high. ¹⁶ Make a roof^[c] for the boat and leave a space of 18 inches between the roof^[d] and the sides. Build it with three decks and put a door in the side. ¹⁷ I am going to send a flood on the earth to destroy every living being. Everything on the earth will die, ¹⁸ but I will make a covenant with you. Go into the boat with your wife, your sons, and their wives. ^19-20 Take into the boat with you a male and a female of every kind of animal and of every kind of bird, in order to keep them alive. ²¹ Take along all kinds of food for you and for them.” ^22 (I)Noah did everything that God commanded.

The Flood

7 The Lord said to Noah, “Go into the boat with your whole family; I have found that you are the only one in all the world who does what is right. ² Take with you seven pairs of each kind of ritually clean animal, but only one pair of each kind of unclean animal. ³ Take also seven pairs of each kind of bird. Do this so that every kind of animal and bird will be kept alive to reproduce again on the earth. ⁴ Seven days from now I am going to send rain that will fall for forty days and nights, in order to destroy all the living beings that I have made.” ⁵ And Noah did everything that the Lord commanded.

⁶ Noah was six hundred years old when the flood came on the earth. ^7 (J)He and his wife, and his sons and their wives, went into the boat to escape the flood. ⁸ A male and a female of every kind of animal and bird, whether ritually clean or unclean, ⁹ went into the boat with Noah, as God had commanded. ¹⁰ Seven days later the flood came.

^11 (K)When Noah was six hundred years old, on the seventeenth day of the second month all the outlets of the vast body of water beneath the earth burst open, all the floodgates of the sky were opened, ¹² and rain fell on the earth for forty days and nights. ¹³ On that same day Noah and his wife went into the boat with their three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth, and their wives. ¹⁴ With them went every kind of animal, domestic and wild, large and small, and every kind of bird. ¹⁵ A male and a female of each kind of living being went into the boat with Noah, ¹⁶ as God had commanded. Then the Lord shut the door behind Noah.

¹⁷ The flood continued for forty days, and the water became deep enough for the boat to float. ¹⁸ The water became deeper, and the boat drifted on the surface. ¹⁹ It became so deep that it covered the highest mountains; ²⁰ it went on rising until it was about twenty-five feet above the tops of the mountains. ²¹ Every living being on the earth died—every bird, every animal, and every person. ²² Everything on earth that breathed died. ²³ The Lord destroyed all living beings on the earth—human beings, animals, and birds. The only ones left were Noah and those who were with him in the boat. ²⁴ The water did not start going down for a hundred and fifty days.

^7 (A)When John saw many Pharisees and Sadducees coming to him to be baptized, he said to them, “You snakes—who told you that you could escape from the punishment God is about to send? ⁸ Do those things that will show that you have turned from your sins. ^9 (B)And don't think you can escape punishment by saying that Abraham is your ancestor. I tell you that God can take these rocks and make descendants for Abraham! ^10 (C)The ax is ready to cut down the trees at the roots; every tree that does not bear good fruit will be cut down and thrown in the fire. ¹¹ I baptize you with water to show that you have repented, but the one who will come after me will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. He is much greater than I am; and I am not good enough even to carry his sandals. ^12 (D)He has his winnowing shovel with him to thresh out all the grain. He will gather his wheat into his barn, but he will burn the chaff in a fire that never goes out.”

The Baptism of Jesus^(E)

¹³ At that time Jesus arrived from Galilee and came to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him. ¹⁴ But John tried to make him change his mind. “I ought to be baptized by you,” John said, “and yet you have come to me!”

¹⁵ But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so for now. For in this way we shall do all that God requires.” So John agreed.

¹⁶ As soon as Jesus was baptized, he came up out of the water. Then heaven was opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God coming down like a dove and lighting on him. ^17 (F)Then a voice said from heaven, “This is my own dear Son, with whom I am pleased.”

The Temptation of Jesus^(G)

4 ^(H)Then the Spirit led Jesus into the desert to be tempted by the Devil. ² After spending forty days and nights without food, Jesus was hungry. ³ Then the Devil came to him and said, “If you are God's Son, order these stones to turn into bread.”

^4 (I)But Jesus answered, “The scripture says, ‘Human beings cannot live on bread alone, but need every word that God speaks.’”

⁵ Then the Devil took Jesus to Jerusalem, the Holy City, set him on the highest point of the Temple, ^6 (J)and said to him, “If you are God's Son, throw yourself down, for the scripture says,

^7 (K)Jesus answered, “But the scripture also says, ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’”

⁸ Then the Devil took Jesus to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in all their greatness. ⁹ “All this I will give you,” the Devil said, “if you kneel down and worship me.”

^10 (L)Then Jesus answered, “Go away, Satan! The scripture says, ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve only him!’”

¹¹ Then the Devil left Jesus; and angels came and helped him.

^(A)Morning Prayer for Help^[a]

¹⁰ My child, when sinners tempt you, don't give in. ¹¹ Suppose they say, “Come on; let's find someone to kill! Let's attack some innocent people for the fun of it! ¹² They may be alive and well when we find them, but they'll be dead when we're through with them! ¹³ We'll find all kinds of riches and fill our houses with loot! ¹⁴ Come and join us, and we'll all share what we steal.”

¹⁵ My child, don't go with people like that. Stay away from them. ¹⁶ They can't wait to do something bad. They're always ready to kill. ¹⁷ It does no good to spread a net when the bird you want to catch is watching, ¹⁸ but people like that are setting a trap for themselves, a trap in which they will die. ¹⁹ Robbery always claims the life of the robber—this is what happens to^[a] anyone who lives by violence.
