Psalm 6

Psalm 6[a]

For the music director, to be accompanied by stringed instruments, according to the sheminith style;[b] a psalm of David.

Lord, do not rebuke me in your anger.
Do not discipline me in your raging fury.[c]
Have mercy on me,[d] Lord, for I am frail.
Heal me, Lord, for my bones are shaking.[e]
I am absolutely terrified,[f]
and you, Lord—how long will this continue?[g]
Relent, Lord, rescue me![h]
Deliver me because of your faithfulness.[i]
For no one remembers you in the realm of death.[j]
In Sheol who gives you thanks?[k]
I am exhausted as I groan.
All night long I drench my bed in tears;[l]
my tears saturate the cushion beneath me.[m]
My eyes[n] grow dim[o] from suffering;
they grow weak[p] because of all my enemies.[q]
Turn back from me, all you who behave wickedly,[r]
for the Lord has heard the sound of my weeping.[s]
The Lord has heard my appeal for mercy;
the Lord has accepted[t] my prayer.
10 They will be humiliated[u] and absolutely terrified.[v]
All my enemies will turn back and be suddenly humiliated.

Psalm 8-10

Psalm 8[a]

For the music director, according to the gittith style;[b] a psalm of David.

O Lord, our Lord,[c]
how magnificent[d] is your reputation[e] throughout the earth!
You reveal your majesty in the heavens above.[f]
From the mouths of children and nursing babies
you have ordained praise on account of your adversaries,[g]
so that you might put an end to the vindictive enemy.[h]
When I look up at the heavens, which your fingers made,
and see the moon and the stars, which you set in place,[i]
Of what importance is the human race,[j] that you should notice[k] them?
Of what importance is mankind,[l] that you should pay attention to them?[m]
You made them[n] a little less than[o] the heavenly beings.[p]
You crowned mankind[q] with honor and majesty.[r]
you appoint them to rule over your creation;[s]
you have placed[t] everything under their authority,[u]
including all the sheep and cattle,
as well as the wild animals,[v]
the birds in the sky, the fish in the sea,
and everything that moves through the currents[w] of the seas.
O Lord, our Lord,[x]
how magnificent[y] is your reputation[z] throughout the earth![aa]

Psalm 9[ab]

For the music director, according to the alumoth-labben style;[ac] a psalm of David.

I will thank the Lord with all my heart!
I will tell about all your amazing deeds.[ad]
I will be happy and rejoice in you.
I will sing praises to you, O Most High.[ae]
When my enemies turn back,
they trip and are defeated[af] before you.
For you defended my just cause;[ag]
from your throne you pronounced a just decision.[ah]
You terrified the nations with your battle cry.[ai]
You destroyed the wicked;[aj]
you permanently wiped out all memory of them.[ak]
The enemy’s cities have been reduced to permanent ruins.[al]
You destroyed their cities;[am]
all memory of the enemies has perished.[an]
But the Lord[ao] rules[ap] forever;
he reigns in a just manner.[aq]
He judges the world fairly;
he makes just legal decisions for the nations.[ar]
Consequently[as] the Lord provides safety for the oppressed;[at]
he provides safety in times of trouble.[au]
10 Your loyal followers trust in you,[av]
for you, Lord, do not abandon those who seek your help.[aw]
11 Sing praises to the Lord, who rules[ax] in Zion.
Tell the nations what he has done.[ay]
12 For the one who takes revenge against murderers took notice of the oppressed;[az]
he did not overlook[ba] their cry for help[bb]
13 when they prayed:[bc]
“Have mercy on me,[bd] Lord!
See how I am oppressed by those who hate me,[be]
O one who can snatch me away[bf] from the gates of death!
14 Then I will[bg] tell about all your praiseworthy acts;[bh]
in the gates of Daughter Zion[bi] I will rejoice because of your deliverance.”[bj]
15 The nations fell[bk] into the pit they had made;
their feet were caught in the net they had hidden.[bl]
16 The Lord revealed himself;
he accomplished justice.
The wicked were ensnared by their own actions.[bm] (Higgaion.[bn] Selah)
17 The wicked are turned back and sent to Sheol;[bo]
this is the destiny of[bp] all the nations that ignore[bq] God,
18 for the needy are not permanently ignored,[br]
the hopes of the oppressed are not forever dashed.[bs]
19 Rise up, Lord![bt]
Don’t let men be defiant.[bu]
May the nations be judged in your presence.
20 Terrify them, Lord.[bv]
Let the nations know they are mere mortals.[bw] (Selah)

Psalm 10[bx]

10 Why, Lord, do you stand far off?
Why do you pay no attention during times of trouble?[by]
The wicked arrogantly chase the oppressed;[bz]
the oppressed are trapped[ca] by the schemes the wicked have dreamed up.[cb]
Yes,[cc] the wicked man[cd] boasts because he gets what he wants;[ce]
the one who robs others[cf] curses[cg] and[ch] rejects the Lord.[ci]
The wicked man is so arrogant he always thinks,
“God won’t hold me accountable; he doesn’t care.”[cj]
He is secure at all times.[ck]
He has no regard for your commands;[cl]
he disdains all his enemies.[cm]
He says to himself,[cn]
“I will never[co] be shaken,
because I experience no calamity.”[cp]
His mouth is full of curses and deceptive, harmful words;[cq]
his tongue injures and destroys.[cr]
He waits in ambush near the villages;[cs]
in hidden places he kills the innocent.
His eyes look for some unfortunate victim.[ct]
He lies in ambush in a hidden place, like a lion in a thicket.[cu]
He lies in ambush, waiting to catch[cv] the oppressed;
he catches the oppressed[cw] by pulling in his net.[cx]
10 His victims are crushed and beaten down;
they are trapped in his sturdy nets.[cy]
11 He says to himself,[cz]
“God overlooks it;
he does not pay attention;
he never notices.”[da]
12 Rise up, Lord![db]
O God, strike him down.[dc]
Do not forget the oppressed.
13 Why does the wicked man reject God?[dd]
He says to himself,[de] “You[df] will not hold me accountable.”[dg]
14 You have taken notice,[dh]
for[di] you always see[dj] one who inflicts pain and suffering.[dk]
The unfortunate victim entrusts his cause to you;[dl]
you deliver[dm] the fatherless.[dn]
15 Break the arm[do] of the wicked and evil man.
Hold him accountable for his wicked deeds,[dp]
which he thought you would not discover.[dq]
16 The Lord rules forever![dr]
The nations are driven out of his land.[ds]
17 Lord, you have heard[dt] the request[du] of the oppressed;
you make them feel secure because you listen to their prayer.[dv]
18 You defend[dw] the fatherless and oppressed,[dx]
so that mere mortals may no longer terrorize them.[dy]

Psalm 14

Psalm 14[a]

For the music director, by David.

14 Fools say to themselves,[b] “There is no God.”[c]
They sin and commit evil deeds;[d]
none of them does what is right.[e]
The Lord looks down from heaven[f] at the human race,[g]
to see if there is anyone who is wise[h] and seeks God.[i]
Everyone rejects God;[j]
they are all morally corrupt.[k]
None of them does what is right,[l]
not even one.
All those who behave wickedly[m] do not understand—[n]
those who devour my people as if they were eating bread,
and do not call out to the Lord.
They are absolutely terrified,[o]
for God defends the godly.[p]
You want to humiliate the oppressed,[q]
even though[r] the Lord is their[s] shelter.
I wish the deliverance[t] of Israel would come from Zion!
When the Lord restores the well-being of his people,[u]
may Jacob rejoice,[v]
may Israel be happy![w]

Psalm 16

Psalm 16[a]

A prayer[b] of David.

16 Protect me, O God, for I have taken shelter in you.[c]
I say to the Lord, “You are the Lord,
my only source of well-being.”[d]
As for God’s chosen people who are in the land,
and the leading officials I admired so much[e]
their troubles multiply;
they desire other gods.[f]
I will not pour out drink offerings of blood to their gods,[g]
nor will I make vows in the name of their gods.[h]
Lord, you give me stability and prosperity;[i]
you make my future secure.[j]
It is as if I have been given fertile fields
or received a beautiful tract of land.[k]
I will praise[l] the Lord who[m] guides[n] me;
yes, during the night I reflect and learn.[o]
I constantly trust in the Lord;[p]
because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.
So my heart rejoices
and I am happy;[q]
my life is safe.[r]
10 You will not abandon me[s] to Sheol;[t]
you will not allow your faithful follower[u] to see[v] the Pit.[w]
11 You lead me in[x] the path of life.[y]
I experience absolute joy in your presence;[z]
you always give me sheer delight.[aa]

Psalm 19

Psalm 19[a]

For the music director, a psalm of David.

19 The heavens declare the glory of God;[b]
the sky displays his handiwork.[c]
Day after day it speaks out;[d]
night after night it reveals his greatness.[e]
There is no actual speech or word,
nor is its[f] voice literally heard.
Yet its voice[g] echoes[h] throughout the earth;
its[i] words carry[j] to the distant horizon.[k]
In the sky[l] he has pitched a tent for the sun.[m]
Like a bridegroom it emerges[n] from its chamber;[o]
like a strong man it enjoys[p] running its course.[q]
It emerges from the distant horizon,[r]
and goes from one end of the sky to the other;[s]
nothing can escape[t] its heat.
The law of the Lord is perfect
and preserves one’s life.[u]
The rules set down by the Lord[v] are reliable[w]
and impart wisdom to the inexperienced.[x]
The Lord’s precepts are fair[y]
and make one joyful.[z]
The Lord’s commands[aa] are pure[ab]
and give insight for life.[ac]
The commands to fear the Lord are right[ad]
and endure forever.[ae]
The judgments given by the Lord are trustworthy
and absolutely just.[af]
10 They are of greater value[ag] than gold,
than even a great amount of pure gold;
they bring greater delight[ah] than honey,
than even the sweetest honey from a honeycomb.
11 Yes, your servant finds moral guidance there;[ai]
those who obey them receive a rich reward.[aj]
12 Who can know all his errors?[ak]
Please do not punish me for sins I am unaware of.[al]
13 Moreover, keep me from committing flagrant sins;[am]
do not allow such sins to control me.[an]
Then I will be blameless,
and innocent of blatant[ao] rebellion.
14 May my words and my thoughts
be acceptable in your sight,[ap]
O Lord, my sheltering rock[aq] and my redeemer.[ar]

Psalm 21

Psalm 21[a]

For the music director, a psalm of David.

21 O Lord, the king rejoices in the strength you give;[b]
he takes great delight in the deliverance you provide.[c]
You grant[d] him his heart’s desire;
you do not refuse his request.[e] (Selah)
For you bring him[f] rich[g] blessings;[h]
you place a golden crown on his head.
He asked you to sustain his life,[i]
and you have granted him long life and an enduring dynasty.[j]
Your deliverance brings him great honor;[k]
you give him majestic splendor.[l]
For you grant him lasting blessings;
you give him great joy by allowing him into your presence.[m]
For the king trusts[n] in the Lord,
and because of the Most High’s[o] faithfulness he is not shaken.[p]
You[q] prevail over[r] all your enemies;
your power is too great for those who hate you.[s]
You burn them up like a fiery furnace[t] when you appear.[u]
The Lord angrily devours them;[v]
the fire consumes them.
10 You destroy their offspring[w] from the earth,
their descendants[x] from among the human race.[y]
11 Yes,[z] they intend to do you harm;[aa]
they dream up a scheme,[ab] but they do not succeed.[ac]
12 For you make them retreat[ad]
when you aim your arrows at them.[ae]
13 Rise up, O Lord, in strength![af]
We will sing and praise[ag] your power.
