Chronological
The Transfiguration
17 Six days later[a] Jesus took with him Peter, James, and John the brother of James,[b] and led them privately up a high mountain. 2 And he was transfigured before them.[c] His[d] face shone like the sun, and his clothes became white as light. 3 Then Moses[e] and Elijah[f] also appeared before them, talking with him. 4 So[g] Peter said[h] to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you want, I will make[i] three shelters[j]—one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” 5 While he was still speaking, a[k] bright cloud[l] overshadowed[m] them, and a voice from the cloud said,[n] “This is my one dear Son,[o] in whom I take great delight. Listen to him!”[p] 6 When the disciples heard this, they were overwhelmed with fear and threw themselves down with their faces to the ground.[q] 7 But Jesus came and touched them. “Get up,” he said. “Do not be afraid.” 8 When[r] they looked up, all they saw was Jesus alone.
9 As they were coming down from the mountain, Jesus commanded them,[s] “Do not tell anyone about the vision until the Son of Man is raised from the dead.” 10 The disciples asked him,[t] “Why then do the experts in the law[u] say that Elijah must come first?” 11 He[v] answered, “Elijah does indeed come first and will restore all things. 12 And I tell you that Elijah has already come. Yet they did not recognize him, but did to him whatever they wanted. In[w] the same way, the Son of Man will suffer at their hands.” 13 Then the disciples understood that he was speaking to them about John the Baptist.
The Disciples’ Failure to Heal
14 When[x] they came to the crowd, a man came to him, knelt before him, 15 and said, “Lord, have mercy on my son, because he has seizures[y] and suffers terribly, for he often falls into the fire and into the water. 16 I brought him to your disciples, but[z] they were not able to heal him.” 17 Jesus answered,[aa] “You[ab] unbelieving[ac] and perverse generation! How much longer must I be with you? How much longer must I endure[ad] you?[ae] Bring him here to me.” 18 Then[af] Jesus rebuked[ag] the demon and it came out of him, and the boy was healed from that moment. 19 Then the disciples came[ah] to Jesus privately and said, “Why couldn’t we cast it out?” 20 He told them, “It was because of your little faith. I tell you the truth,[ai] if you have faith the size of[aj] a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; nothing[ak] will be impossible for you.”[al]
Second Prediction of Jesus’ Death and Resurrection
22 When[am] they gathered together in Galilee, Jesus told them, “The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into the hands of men.[an] 23 They will kill him, and on the third day he will be raised.” And they became greatly distressed.
The Temple Tax
24 After[ao] they arrived in Capernaum,[ap] the collectors of the temple tax[aq] came to Peter and said, “Your teacher pays the double drachma tax, doesn’t he?” 25 He said, “Yes.” When Peter came into the house, Jesus spoke to him first,[ar] “What do you think, Simon? From whom do earthly kings collect tolls or taxes—from their sons[as] or from foreigners?” 26 After he said, “From foreigners,” Jesus said to him, “Then the sons[at] are free. 27 But so that we don’t offend them, go to the lake and throw out a hook. Take the first fish that comes up, and when you open its mouth, you will find a four drachma coin.[au] Take that and give it to them for me and you.”
9 1 And he said to them, “I tell you the truth,[a] there are some standing here who will not[b] experience[c] death before they see the kingdom of God come with power.”[d]
The Transfiguration
2 Six days later[e] Jesus took with him Peter, James, and John and led them alone up a high mountain privately. And he was transfigured before them,[f] 3 and his clothes became radiantly white, more so than any launderer in the world could bleach them. 4 Then Elijah appeared before them along with Moses,[g] and they were talking with Jesus. 5 So[h] Peter said to Jesus,[i] “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here. Let us make three shelters[j]—one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” 6 (For they were afraid, and he did not know what to say.)[k] 7 Then[l] a cloud[m] overshadowed them,[n] and a voice came from the cloud, “This is my one dear Son.[o] Listen to him!”[p] 8 Suddenly when they looked around, they saw no one with them any more except Jesus.
9 As they were coming down from the mountain, he gave them orders not to tell anyone what they had seen until after the Son of Man had risen from the dead. 10 They kept this statement to themselves, discussing what this rising from the dead meant.
11 Then[q] they asked him,[r] “Why do the experts in the law[s] say that Elijah must come first?” 12 He said to them, “Elijah does indeed come first, and restores all things. And why is it written that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be despised? 13 But I tell you that Elijah has certainly come, and they did to him whatever they wanted, just as it is written about him.”
The Disciples’ Failure to Heal
14 When they came to the disciples, they saw a large crowd around them and experts in the law[t] arguing with them. 15 When the whole crowd saw him, they were amazed and ran[u] at once and greeted him. 16 He asked them, “What are you arguing about with them?” 17 A member of the crowd said to him, “Teacher, I brought you my son, who is possessed by a spirit that makes him mute. 18 Whenever it seizes him, it throws him down, and he foams at the mouth, grinds his teeth, and becomes rigid. I asked your disciples to cast it out, but[v] they were not able to do so.”[w] 19 He answered them,[x] “You[y] unbelieving[z] generation! How much longer[aa] must I be with you? How much longer must I endure[ab] you?[ac] Bring him to me.” 20 So they brought the boy[ad] to him. When the spirit saw him, it immediately threw the boy into a convulsion. He[ae] fell on the ground and rolled around, foaming at the mouth. 21 Jesus[af] asked his father, “How long has this been happening to him?” And he said, “From childhood. 22 It has often thrown him into fire or water to destroy him. But if you are able to do anything, have compassion on us and help us.” 23 Then Jesus said to him, “‘If you are able?’[ag] All things are possible for the one who believes.” 24 Immediately the father of the boy cried out and said, “I believe; help my unbelief!”
25 Now when Jesus saw that a crowd was quickly gathering, he rebuked[ah] the unclean spirit,[ai] saying to it, “Mute and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him and never enter him again.” 26 It shrieked, threw him into terrible convulsions, and came out. The boy[aj] looked so much like a corpse that many said, “He is dead!” 27 But Jesus gently took his hand and raised him to his feet, and he stood up.
28 Then,[ak] after he went into the house, his disciples asked him privately, “Why couldn’t we cast it out?” 29 He told them, “This kind can come out only by prayer.”[al]
Second Prediction of Jesus’ Death and Resurrection
30 They went out from there and passed through Galilee. But[am] Jesus[an] did not want anyone to know, 31 for he was teaching his disciples and telling them, “The Son of Man will be betrayed into the hands of men.[ao] They[ap] will kill him,[aq] and after three days he will rise.”[ar] 32 But they did not understand this statement and were afraid to ask him.
Questions About the Greatest
33 Then[as] they came to Capernaum.[at] After Jesus[au] was inside the house he asked them, “What were you discussing on the way?” 34 But they were silent, for on the way they had argued with one another about who was the greatest. 35 After he sat down, he called the twelve and said to them, “If anyone wants to be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.” 36 He took a little child and had him stand among them. Taking him in his arms, he said to them, 37 “Whoever welcomes[av] one of these little children[aw] in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me does not welcome me but the one who sent me.”
On Jesus’ Side
38 John said to him, “Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him because he was not following us.” 39 But Jesus said, “Do not stop him, because no one who does a miracle in my name will be able soon afterward to say anything bad about me. 40 For whoever is not against us is for us. 41 For I tell you the truth,[ax] whoever gives you a cup of water because[ay] you bear Christ’s[az] name will never lose his reward.
42 “If anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a huge millstone[ba] tied around his neck and to be thrown into the sea. 43 If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off! It is better for you to enter into life crippled than to have[bb] two hands and go into hell,[bc] to the unquenchable fire.[bd] 45 If your foot causes you to sin, cut it off! It is better to enter life lame than to have[be] two feet and be thrown into hell.[bf] 47 If your eye causes you to sin, tear it out![bg] It is better to enter into the kingdom of God[bh] with one eye than to have[bi] two eyes and be thrown into hell, 48 where their worm never dies and the fire is never quenched. 49 Everyone will be salted with fire.[bj] 50 Salt[bk] is good, but if it loses its saltiness,[bl] how can you make it salty again? Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with each other.”
The Transfiguration
28 Now[a] about eight days[b] after these sayings, Jesus[c] took with him Peter, John, and James, and went up the mountain to pray. 29 As[d] he was praying,[e] the appearance of his face was transformed,[f] and his clothes became very bright, a brilliant white.[g] 30 Then[h] two men, Moses and Elijah,[i] began talking with him.[j] 31 They appeared in glorious splendor and spoke about his departure[k] that he was about to carry out[l] at Jerusalem. 32 Now Peter and those with him were quite sleepy,[m] but as they became fully awake,[n] they saw his glory and the two men standing with him. 33 Then[o] as the men[p] were starting to leave,[q] Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good for us to be here. Let us make three shelters,[r] one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah”—not knowing what he was saying. 34 As[s] he was saying this, a cloud[t] came[u] and overshadowed[v] them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. 35 Then[w] a voice came from the cloud, saying, “This is my Son, my Chosen One.[x] Listen to him!”[y] 36 After[z] the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. So[aa] they kept silent and told no one[ab] at that time[ac] anything of what they had seen.
Healing a Boy with an Unclean Spirit
37 Now on[ad] the next day, when they had come down from the mountain, a large crowd met him. 38 Then[ae] a man from the crowd cried out,[af] “Teacher, I beg you to look at[ag] my son—he is my only child! 39 A[ah] spirit seizes him, and he suddenly screams;[ai] it throws him into convulsions[aj] and causes him to foam at the mouth. It hardly ever leaves him alone, torturing[ak] him severely. 40 I[al] begged[am] your disciples to cast it out, but[an] they could not do so.”[ao] 41 Jesus answered,[ap] “You[aq] unbelieving[ar] and perverse generation! How much longer[as] must I be with you and endure[at] you?[au] Bring your son here.” 42 As[av] the boy[aw] was approaching, the demon threw him to the ground[ax] and shook him with convulsions.[ay] But Jesus rebuked[az] the unclean[ba] spirit, healed the boy, and gave him back to his father. 43 Then[bb] they were all astonished at the mighty power[bc] of God.
Another Prediction of Jesus’ Suffering
But while the entire crowd[bd] was amazed at everything Jesus[be] was doing, he said to his disciples, 44 “Take these words to heart,[bf] for the Son of Man is going to be betrayed into the hands of men.”[bg] 45 But they did not understand this statement; its meaning[bh] had been concealed[bi] from them, so that they could not grasp it. Yet[bj] they were afraid to ask him about this statement.
Concerning the Greatest
46 Now an argument started among the disciples[bk] as to which of them might be[bl] the greatest. 47 But when Jesus discerned their innermost thoughts,[bm] he took a child, had him stand by[bn] his side, 48 and said to them, “Whoever welcomes[bo] this child[bp] in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me, for the one who is least among you all is the one who is great.”[bq]
On the Right Side
49 John answered,[br] “Master, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we tried to stop[bs] him because he is not a disciple[bt] along with us.” 50 But Jesus said to him, “Do not stop him, for whoever is not against you is for you.”
Rejection in Samaria
51 Now when[bu] the days drew near[bv] for him to be taken up,[bw] Jesus[bx] set out resolutely[by] to go to Jerusalem. 52 He[bz] sent messengers on ahead of him.[ca] As they went along,[cb] they entered a Samaritan village to make things ready in advance[cc] for him, 53 but the villagers[cd] refused to welcome[ce] him, because he was determined to go to Jerusalem.[cf] 54 Now when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, “Lord, do you want us to call fire to come down from heaven and consume[cg] them?”[ch] 55 But Jesus[ci] turned and rebuked them,[cj] 56 and they went on to another village.
Challenging Professed Followers
57 As[ck] they were walking[cl] along the road, someone said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.”[cm] 58 Jesus said to him, “Foxes have dens and the birds in the sky[cn] have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.”[co] 59 Jesus[cp] said to another, “Follow me.” But he replied,[cq] “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.” 60 But Jesus[cr] said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead,[cs] but as for you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God.”[ct] 61 Yet[cu] another said, “I will follow you, Lord, but first let me say goodbye to my family.”[cv] 62 Jesus[cw] said to him, “No one who puts his[cx] hand to the plow and looks back[cy] is fit for the kingdom of God.”[cz]
